OBS’s VLC Video source can play an ordered playlist of local files, but OBS does not promise gap-free transitions. If the gap persists at file handoffs, prepare the clips as one continuous video and test it in the preview before streaming.
1. Confirm how the playlist is set up
For a list of separate local MP4s, use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS describes it as supporting a playlist, unlike the single-file Media Source. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

- In OBS, check that the playlist is a VLC Video source rather than assuming a single-file Media Source will play several files as a playlist.
- Open the source’s properties and check the playlist order and playback options. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Confirm the settings match the sequence you want.
- Check whether scenes or source visibility change during playback. OBS documents that a source configured to stop when it is not visible can stop while hidden and restart when visible. A visibility change can therefore affect playback.
2. Find out where the black frame is coming from
Watch the OBS preview through a problem transition and note whether the black segment appears exactly as one file ends and the next begins. Also inspect the last frames of the outgoing file and the first frames of the incoming file. This separates a possible handoff or reload delay from black frames already present in the media; it is a diagnostic check, not an automatic OBS repair.
- Black appears in OBS preview at a file boundary: focus first on the playlist, visibility behavior, and the separate file handoff.
- Black appears within a clip or at its start/end: inspect or edit that file; changing YouTube’s live settings will not remove black video encoded in the clip.
- OBS preview looks clean but YouTube playback does not: investigate delivery and viewer playback separately rather than assuming the local source transition is the cause.
OBS notes that a Media Source can briefly show nothing while reloading after becoming visible again. That is one possible explanation for a blank interval, but the note does not establish that every VLC playlist transition produces black frames. See OBS’s source documentation.

3. Try the least disruptive fix first
Keep the VLC playlist, but verify its behavior
If you want to keep the clips separate and editable in OBS, confirm the files are in the intended order, shuffle is off if you need a fixed sequence, and looping is set as desired. Avoid unnecessary scene or source visibility changes during playback. OBS supports VLC playlists, but its documentation does not identify a setting that guarantees gapless file transitions.
Assemble the clips into one continuous video
If black frames continue at the boundaries, combine the clips into a single continuous video before the stream, then play that file as one source. This removes separate file handoffs from the playback sequence and is a practical workaround, not a guaranteed fix documented by OBS. Check the resulting file from start to finish in OBS preview before going live. OBS’s audio and video formats guide covers supported formats and media considerations.

Consider a playlist plugin only if you need one
The third-party Media Playlist Source resource lists OBS 31 as the minimum for version 0.1.0 and later. Its update notes include fixes related to playlist continuation after transitions and repeated paths, but those notes do not establish that it eliminates every black gap. Check the current compatibility and release information for your OBS version before installing it.
4. Keep OBS and YouTube troubleshooting separate
YouTube’s live-stream settings cover the encoder stream URL and key, along with delivery choices such as latency. YouTube notes that lower latency may increase playback buffering. Those settings concern delivery to viewers; the cited YouTube documentation does not provide a control to remove a black frame created by a local OBS file transition. If OBS preview is clean but the YouTube player is not, compare the two outputs and review YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

5. Quick checks before going live
- VLC is installed and its bitness matches OBS; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The source is a VLC Video playlist if you intend to play multiple files, and its order, loop, and shuffle settings are correct.
- The source is not being hidden and restarted unexpectedly by scene changes.
- You have watched each troublesome boundary in OBS preview and checked whether black frames belong to the files themselves.
- If you assembled one file, you have tested the complete output in preview rather than assuming the conversion removed every gap.
- You have verified the stream key and YouTube delivery settings independently if the preview is clean but viewers still see a problem.
