Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBackground noise in a video rarely comes from one source. It might be constant room hiss, intermittent street noise, keyboard clicks, or wind—each needs a different kind of cleanup.
On a Mac, you have several solid options: iMovie for quick cleanup, Premiere Pro for structured audio treatment, DaVinci Resolve for deeper processing, and ffmpeg as a power-user fallback when you need repeatable control.

This guide walks you through practical workflows to remove background noise from video on Mac, including what to do when the first attempt makes the audio sound “underwater.”
Why background noise is tricky on video (and what “removal” really means)
Most “noise removal” tools do not truly delete noise forever. They estimate what part of the audio is noise (or noise-like) and then reduce it—usually by applying a filter, gating, spectral subtraction, or a trained voice enhancement model.

That’s why settings matter. Over-aggressive reduction can cause:
- Artifacts: watery, metallic, or robotic sounds
- Musical noise: grainy “crackling” behind speech
- Volume pumping: audio ducks in and out unnaturally
- Loss of consonants: speech becomes muffled
Think of the goal as improving intelligibility and lowering distracting noise, not making audio perfect.

Method 1: Remove background noise in iMovie (fastest for most people)
iMovie is the quickest route when you want acceptable results without learning audio engineering. Depending on your iMovie version, you may see controls like Reduce Background Noise and/or Audio Cleanup.
Step-by-step in iMovie
- Open iMovie on your Mac.
- Create a new project: click Create New → Movie.
- Import your video: click Import Media and select the clip.
- Drag the clip to the timeline.
- Select the clip in the timeline so its audio options appear.
- Look for Audio controls (often via the Audio button or the inspector panel).
- Enable Reduce Background Noise (or Audio Cleanup → choose the noise reduction option).
- Preview playback and adjust intensity if iMovie offers a slider (some versions do, others keep it automatic).
- Export: click File → Share → choose File and keep audio quality high.
Best use cases for iMovie
- Light-to-moderate constant noise (room tone hiss, low fan noise)
- Dialogue interviews where noise reduction doesn’t need perfection
- Quick social exports where you care more about intelligibility than lab-grade audio
Common iMovie gotchas
- No noise options visible: confirm you’ve selected the clip on the timeline (not the blank canvas) and your iMovie version supports audio cleanup.
- Noise reduction hurts speech: reduce the effect strength if possible, or process only the loudest dialogue moments by trimming the clip.
- Wind or pops: iMovie noise reduction may not handle plosives well—use a different tool or manually split and treat only sections without wind bursts.
Method 2: Clean audio in Adobe Premiere Pro on macOS
If you already have Premiere Pro, it’s one of the most consistent ways to tame background noise while keeping voices natural. The workflow usually goes through Essential Sound plus noise reduction.
Step-by-step with Essential Sound and Noise Reduction
- Open Premiere Pro and create/open your project.
- Import your video and drag it onto the timeline.
- Select the audio clip you want to process (in the timeline audio track).
- Open the Essential Sound panel: Window → Essential Sound.
- In Essential Sound, set Dialogue as the sound type.
- Turn on the voice-related processing options available in your version.
- Find Noise Reduction (or Repair / Reduce controls depending on version).
- Adjust the noise reduction amount in small steps (5–10% at a time). Preview each change.
- If you have sections with different noise profiles, split the audio clip (Command+B) and apply different settings to each region.
- Export: File → Export → Media. Choose H.264/H.265 and ensure the audio codec/bitrate stays high enough.
Best use cases for Premiere Pro
- Dialogue with changing noise (e.g., someone walks near traffic)
- Projects that also need EQ (reduce rumble, enhance clarity)
- Teams or creators with repeatable audio workflows
Troubleshooting Premiere Pro noise reduction
- Robo voice / muffled consonants: lower noise reduction strength; consider reducing the effect only to the noisiest sections.
- Still too noisy: try additional EQ (e.g., reduce low-frequency rumble first) before increasing noise reduction.
- Soundstage changes: check if any “voice” enhancement changes stereo width; disable extra spatial processing if available.
Method 3: Use DaVinci Resolve (free) with Fairlight for stronger results
DaVinci Resolve is a favorite for serious audio cleanup because its Fairlight page provides more granular controls. The exact labels vary by version, but you’ll typically use tools under Voice and Noise Reduction in Fairlight.
Step-by-step with Voice Isolation and noise reduction
- Open DaVinci Resolve and create a new project.
- Import your video (Media Pool) and place it on the timeline.
- Open the Fairlight page.
- Select the audio track/clip you want to clean.
- Look for a processing section such as Voice Isolation or Dialogue enhancement.
- Enable voice/ dialogue tools first (these usually focus on speech frequencies).
- Apply Noise Reduction using the available controls (strength/threshold).
- Preview and iterate. If it sounds artificial, back off on the reduction amount and re-check for consonant clarity.
- For best results, process shorter segments. Split the clip and adjust per section if the noise changes.
- Export using the Deliver page with appropriate video codec and audio settings.
Best use cases for Resolve
- Longform interviews where you can spend a little more time tweaking
- Subtle noise that needs careful balancing with speech clarity
- Projects where you want to avoid the “over-cleaned” robotic sound
Common artifacts and how to reduce them
- Musical noise: reduce noise reduction strength and increase smoothing if the tool offers it.
- Breathy artifacts: disable or reduce aggressive “voice isolation” and try a smaller reduction amount.
- Whistling in silence: lower threshold or apply noise reduction only during dialogue rather than whole clips.
Method 4: Command line with ffmpeg (no GUI, maximum control)
If you want a repeatable workflow (or you’re comfortable with the command line), ffmpeg is the most flexible option on macOS. You can also combine multiple filters for different noise types.

Prerequisites
- Install ffmpeg using Homebrew (recommended):
brew install ffmpeg - Have enough disk space—some approaches create temporary files
- Know your audio codec and sample rate if you’re targeting consistent outputs
Step-by-step: typical noise reduction workflow
- Identify a noise-only portion (a 0.5–2 second segment where only the background noise is present).
- Extract a noise profile from that segment.
- Apply a noise reduction filter to the full audio track using the profile.
- Re-mux the cleaned audio back into the video.
Example commands you can adapt
These commands assume you have a video file named input.mp4 and a noise-only audio snippet extracted to noise.wav.
- Extract audio from the video:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -ac 2 -ar 48000 -c:a pcm_s16le audio.wav - Create a reduced-noise output (spectral approach):
ffmpeg -i audio.wav -af afftdn=nf=-25:c=200 -ar 48000 -ac 2 noisy_removed.wav - Reattach audio to the original video:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -i noisy_removed.wav -c:v copy -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -shortest output_clean.mp4
Parameters like nf (noise floor) and c (cutoff/characteristics depending on the filter) are where results improve or fall apart. Expect to test a few values on a short segment first.
When ffmpeg settings don’t work
- Still noisy: try a stronger noise floor (lower
nf) or different cutoff values; also try a pre-filter EQ to reduce low-frequency rumble. - Artifacts: back off the reduction strength. Over-filtering creates metallic textures and pumping.
- Noise changes over time: use time-based splitting (process sections separately) or generate multiple noise profiles.
How to avoid making things worse (quality checklist)
Before you export, do a quick audit. You’ll often hear problems that aren’t obvious when the clip is quiet or during fast speech.
- Check consonants: listen for T, K, S sounds. If they vanish, noise reduction is too strong.
- Check pauses: if silence now contains a whistle or “zing,” noise removal is likely over-fitting.
- Compare A/B: if your tool supports it, toggle the effect. If the “clean” version sounds farther away, reduce the processing.
- Process shorter segments: splitting the timeline beats applying one setting to an entire hour.
- Don’t forget EQ: removing rumble first can reduce how hard noise reduction must work.
Export settings that preserve cleaned audio
Clean audio can get ruined by low-bitrate exports. When you export on your Mac, prioritize audio quality in the sharing/export step.

| Export goal | Recommended approach | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Best quality for archiving | H.264/H.265 with high audio bitrate (or lossless if workflow allows) | Exporting with a very low audio bitrate |
| Web upload (YouTube, etc.) | MP4/H.264 or H.265 and keep audio at least AAC 128–192 kbps | Exporting AAC at 96 kbps and losing high-frequency speech clarity |
| Editing round-trip | Use a consistent codec and sample rate to avoid sync/quality drift | Mixing mismatched sample rates and letting the editor resample awkwardly |
If your noise cleanup created a very “processed” sound, the export codec won’t fix that—only reduce the original over-processing. Still, exporting with low audio bitrate can exaggerate artifacts.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better on Mac: iMovie or DaVinci Resolve?
iMovie is faster and easier, especially for light background hiss. DaVinci Resolve is usually better when noise is complex (wind, changing ambience, or heavy crowd noise) because it offers more detailed control in Fairlight.
Can I remove noise without losing voice quality?
Yes, but you have to avoid aggressive settings. Aim for intelligibility first, then refine. Processing only the noisiest segments typically preserves more natural speech than applying one strong effect to everything.
Why does the audio sound robotic after noise reduction?
That usually happens when the noise reduction is too strong or the tool misclassifies parts of speech as noise. Lower the strength, process shorter segments, and consider EQ (rumble removal) before noise reduction.

Will these tools work for wind noise and plosives?
Wind and plosives are harder than steady hiss. You’ll often get better results by trimming out the worst wind bursts, using a dedicated noise/wind tool (if available), or applying a targeted effect only where the voice is affected.
What if my video has two audio tracks?
Many video files contain separate audio channels or tracks (e.g., camera audio and external mic). Select the specific track containing the noise you want to reduce, then export with the corrected track enabled.
Bottom Line
If you need quick improvement, iMovie can remove light-to-moderate background noise with a few clicks. For noticeably better results, especially with changing noise or dialogue-heavy footage, use DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro and dial the processing in on smaller sections.
Recommended Free Tools
When you want repeatable, controllable results, ffmpeg on macOS gives you the most control—just be prepared to test settings on short samples before processing the full video.
