This complete 2024 tutorial focuses on the two things that most often break: microphone input and audio output. Follow the platform steps in order, and you’ll get your AirPods working reliably in Discord.
Scope note: The steps below assume AirPods are already paired to your device and can be used in other apps. If pairing itself is broken, fix that first—Discord can’t solve missing Bluetooth connectivity.

Why AirPods Fail in Discord (Common Causes)
Discord has its own audio device picker for both input (mic) and output (speakers). When it’s set incorrectly, Discord may keep using your laptop mic or phone speaker instead of your AirPods.
On top of that, Bluetooth audio profiles can behave differently for AirPods. Many systems switch between:

- Stereo (A2DP) for music/audio playback
- Hands-Free (HFP) for microphone calls (often lower quality and sometimes limited)
Discord may end up on the wrong profile, or your OS may change the profile when you join a voice channel, causing one-way audio (mic works but no sound, or sound works but nobody hears you).
What You Need Before You Start
- AirPods paired to your device (iPhone/iPad, macOS, Windows, or Android phone/tablet).
- Discord updated (desktop app or browser). If you use the browser version, Discord still runs its own device selection.
- Your voice channel in Discord ready for testing (use a private server if you can).
- Optional but helpful: another person to confirm mic input, or a quick recording test.
Quick Tests That Reveal the Real Problem
Before you change a bunch of settings, identify whether the problem is input, output, or both.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Discord and join a voice channel.
- Look at the Discord audio indicators (voice activity, mic level) while you speak.
- Ask someone to confirm whether they can hear you.
Then test audio output:
- Play any audio source (YouTube, music app, or a friend speaking in the channel).
- Confirm you hear it through AirPods, not the computer/phone speaker.
If your mic level moves in Discord but nobody hears you, you likely have the wrong input device or Discord is stuck on an incompatible Bluetooth profile.
Fixes That Work on All Platforms
Start with these because they solve the majority of AirPods-in-Discord issues.
- Toggle AirPods Bluetooth off/on. Disconnect and reconnect AirPods, then reopen Discord (or at least switch voice channels).
- Reconnect in Discord itself. In voice channels, leave and rejoin after you’ve confirmed AirPods are connected.
- Set the correct input/output devices in Discord. Discord must be pointed at the AirPods mic for input and AirPods for output.
- Disable other audio apps temporarily. Close music/meeting apps that may “steal” Bluetooth profiles.
- Restart Discord. Fully quit the desktop app and relaunch it to refresh device detection.
Windows 10/11: Discord Not Using AirPods (Mic or Audio)
Windows often exposes multiple “AirPods” entries: one for playback and one for hands-free mic. Discord needs the right ones.

Step 1: Set AirPods as default output + input in Windows
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → Sound settings.
- Under Output, select AirPods (or AirPods Stereo).
- Scroll to Input → choose AirPods (AirPods Hands-Free / Microphone).
- Click Test your microphone and speak to confirm the input meter moves.
Step 2: Pick the right devices inside Discord
- Open Discord → User Settings (gear icon) → Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select the AirPods microphone entry (often named AirPods Hands-Free).
- Under Output Device, select AirPods / AirPods Stereo.
- Turn on Automatically determine input sensitivity or set sensitivity manually.
- Use Let’s Check (if available) or speak and watch input activity.
Step 3: If you have echo, low volume, or distortions
- In Discord → Voice & Video, temporarily disable:
- Echo Cancellation
- Noise Suppression
Then retest. If it improves, re-enable them one at a time to find the conflicting setting.

If Discord output keeps dropping when someone speaks, Windows may be toggling profiles between stereo and hands-free.
- Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers.
- If you see multiple AirPods audio devices, note their names.
- In Sound settings, keep Output locked to the AirPods Stereo option.
- For Input, use the AirPods Hands-Free mic option.
Expected behavior: It’s normal that the mic uses the hands-free profile and audio uses stereo. The key is that Discord must point to the correct device for each.
macOS: Discord Not Using AirPods (Mic or Audio)
macOS is usually stable, but Discord still needs the right device selected. Also, macOS can route audio differently between “Automatic” Bluetooth switching and your app’s input/output.
Step 1: Choose the correct input/output in Discord
- Discord → Settings (gear) → Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, pick AirPods microphone (often shows as AirPods … Microphone).
- Under Output Device, pick AirPods (not your Mac speaker).
Step 2: Verify macOS sound routing
- Apple menu → System Settings → Sound.
- Under Output, select your AirPods.
- Under Input, select your AirPods microphone.
- Speak and confirm the input level moves.
Step 3: Reset the audio device list (when Discord “sticks”)
- Fully quit Discord (Cmd + Q).
- Go to AirPods in Bluetooth settings and click Disconnect, then Connect again.
- Relaunch Discord and rejoin the voice channel.
Step 4: Disable “Use Legacy Video Processing” (only if you see related issues)
This isn’t typically an audio problem, but if you have broader voice/video weirdness, Discord’s settings can behave unexpectedly. For pure AirPods mic/output issues, prioritize device selection first.

iPhone/iPad: Discord Won’t Hear or Play Through AirPods
On iOS, Discord uses iPhone’s system audio routing. If Discord can’t see the AirPods audio path, you’ll get one-way audio or silence.
Step 1: Confirm AirPods audio routing
- While on iPhone/iPad, open Control Center.
- Press/hold the Audio tile (or AirPlay icon).
- Select your AirPods as the active output.
Step 2: Check Discord voice settings
- Open Discord → tap User Settings (profile icon) → Voice / Voice & Video (menu name varies by app version).
- Confirm the mic is enabled and that Discord permissions allow microphone access.
- Join a voice channel and test mic level.
Step 3: Fix permission and background audio issues
- iOS: Settings → Discord → enable Microphone.
- Also confirm you didn’t disable Bluetooth access for Discord (if present).
- Force-close Discord (swipe up) and reopen after AirPods connect.
Step 4: Re-pair quickly if audio is stuck
- Settings → Bluetooth.
- Tap the i next to AirPods → Forget This Device.
- Re-pair AirPods, then restart Discord.
Use this when the app consistently picks the wrong audio path across multiple restarts.
Android: Discord Not Working with AirPods (When You’re Using a Bluetooth Setup)
AirPods on Android can work for music, but microphone reliability varies because Bluetooth hands-free behavior depends heavily on the Android Bluetooth stack.
Step 1: Confirm Bluetooth profile and mic selection
- Settings → Bluetooth → tap your AirPods.
- Look for options like Audio, Calls, or similar.
- Enable both playback and calls/microphone (if available).
Step 2: Discord app mic/output check
- Open Discord → Settings → Voice settings.
- Confirm the input is not set to the phone microphone.
- Test while speaking; watch for input movement.
Step 3: Try a different Bluetooth mode or a different headset profile
If you can hear audio but nobody hears you, you’re likely stuck in a playback-only mode. If your Android offers separate call/voice profiles, switch to the calls-capable one.

If Only One Side Works (Left/Right) or Audio Is Distorted
Sometimes this isn’t Discord at all—it’s an AirPods firmware/profile mismatch or a noisy connection between AirPods and the device.
Rank #4
- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
- Reconnect the AirPods and verify stereo audio in a different app.
- In Discord, confirm output is set to AirPods Stereo (or the playback entry, not the hands-free one).
- Try a different voice channel (Discord can apply different audio settings per channel sometimes).
If the problem persists across apps, update your AirPods firmware (via iPhone) and ensure they’re fully charged.
When Discord Keeps Switching Devices or Drops Audio
Device switching happens when multiple microphones/speakers are available, or when Bluetooth reconnect events occur while you’re in a voice channel.
- In Discord → Voice & Video, set both Input Device and Output Device manually to the AirPods entries.
- Disable “use default device” behavior if it exists in your Discord version.
- Turn off other Bluetooth devices (headsets, game controllers with audio) to prevent competing endpoints.
- Reboot the device if it keeps reverting after every disconnect/reconnect.
Advanced Settings to Try (Audio Latency, Input Mode, and Voice Settings)
If audio is working but voice quality is bad, tweak Discord’s voice processing. These settings can also affect whether Discord properly captures your mic input.
Voice processing toggles
- Auto Gain Control: try enabling/disabling to see if the mic level behaves consistently.
- Noise Suppression: if your mic sounds “muffled” or “robotic,” test turning it off.
- Echo Cancellation: if you hear your own voice or sound like you’re in a tunnel, disable and test.
Input Mode (Push to Talk vs Voice Activity)
If you’re on Voice Activity, make sure the sensitivity isn’t too low or too high. If Discord never detects you, switch to Push to Talk temporarily to confirm mic input is actually available.
- Discord → Voice & Video.
- Change between Push to Talk and Voice Activity.
- Re-test AirPods mic right after the mode change.
Common Mistakes (That Look Like Hardware Failure)
- Selecting the playback device as the microphone. On Windows/macOS, AirPods may show separate entries for stereo output and hands-free mic.
- Only setting output. Some users set Output Device correctly and forget Input Device, resulting in “they can’t hear me.”
- Leaving Discord open during reconnect. If you disconnect/reconnect AirPods, fully restart Discord so it refreshes device detection.
- Using multiple apps that run voice calls. Zoom, Google Meet, or game chat can lock Bluetooth into a voice profile.
- Bluetooth battery/connection issues. Low battery or frequent micro-disconnects can cause Discord to lose the active endpoint.

FAQs
Why can’t my friends hear me in Discord with AirPods?
Most often it’s the wrong Input Device in Discord (you picked AirPods playback instead of the AirPods microphone). Also check Windows/macOS iOS permissions and confirm your mic meter moves in Discord while you speak.
Why do I hear Discord audio, but my mic is silent?
This usually means Discord is connected to the AirPods output profile but not the hands-free mic profile. Set Discord Input Device to the AirPods microphone entry, and in Windows ensure Input is set to AirPods Hands-Free.
Recommended Free Tools
Can AirPods work in Discord browser version?
Yes, but the browser will still rely on the same OS device selection. Open Discord settings inside the browser app, select the correct AirPods input/output, and ensure the browser has microphone permission enabled.
Will updating Discord fix AirPods audio issues?
Sometimes. But updates rarely resolve mis-selected input/output endpoints. Treat updates as a secondary step—do the device checks first because they’re the root cause in most cases.
Do AirPods support both stereo audio and a microphone at the same time?
They can, but Bluetooth systems often handle stereo (music) and mic (calls) as separate profiles. A “mixed” setup is normal—Discord just has to point to the correct endpoint for input and output.
What if my AirPods work in other apps but not Discord?
That points to Discord-specific device selection or voice settings. Reset by reconnecting AirPods, restarting Discord, and manually selecting the AirPods mic and speaker entries in Discord’s Voice & Video settings.
Bottom Line
Discord AirPods problems are almost always a device-routing issue: Discord is using the wrong input/output, or Bluetooth profile switching is routing your mic incorrectly. Set both input and output to the correct AirPods entries, verify OS sound routing, then retest inside a voice channel.
If it still fails, the fastest fix is usually: reconnect AirPods, restart Discord, switch input mode for confirmation, and then adjust Discord’s echo/noise processing. After that, only re-pairing or Bluetooth resets should be necessary.
