The steps depend on your operating system, and in Windows the layout may be listed under a different language than you expect.
Windows 11: Remove a keyboard layout
- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language & region.
- Find the language entry associated with the unwanted keyboard. Select its … menu, then choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select the … menu beside the layout and choose Remove.
If you do not see the layout under the language you expected, check the entry for the current Windows display language and the entry for the language that matches the layout. Windows may group a layout under a differently named language. See Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard settings guide.

Windows 10: Remove a keyboard layout
- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language.
- Select the language containing the layout, then choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select the unwanted layout and choose Remove.
If the layout is not listed there, check the language currently used for Windows display and the language that matches the keyboard layout. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- In the Input Sources list, select the unwanted source and choose Remove.

Why is Remove greyed out in Windows?
First make sure you selected a keyboard layout rather than the whole language. Check both the language entry for the current Windows display language and the entry matching the unwanted layout; the layout may be grouped under a different language.
If Remove is still unavailable, the selected layout may be the only installed keyboard layout for the current Windows display language. Add another keyboard layout for that display language, then remove the unwanted one. If you intend to remove an entire language pack instead, Microsoft says its removal control is disabled while that language is the current Windows display language; switch the display language first, then remove the pack.

Remove only the layout, or the whole language?
Removing a keyboard layout removes that typing option without removing the associated Windows language pack. Choose language-pack removal only if you also want to remove that language from Windows. The settings paths above are for removing an individual layout; Mac’s steps remove an input source.
