Apple now calls an Apple ID an Apple Account, but the practical choices are unchanged. To keep using the iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → [your name] → Sign Out → Sign Out But Don’t Erase. For a sale, gift, or trade-in, back up or transfer your data first, then use Erase All Content and Settings. If you no longer have the device, use Find My or iCloud.com/find to erase it when necessary and then select Remove This Device.
Removing an account from one device does not delete the Apple Account itself. Signing out, erasing local data, disabling Find My, removing Activation Lock, and deleting an account are separate actions.

Remove the Apple Account while keeping the iPhone or iPad
Use this when you are keeping the device, switching accounts, troubleshooting, or stopping iCloud services without factory-resetting it. Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS or iPadOS version, language, region, and device state.

- Tap your name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Choose Sign Out But Don’t Erase.
- Choose which synchronized information, if any, should remain on the device.
- Enter the device passcode or Apple Account password when requested, then confirm.
Signing out stops that device’s access to services including Find My, iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, iCloud Mail, iCloud Notes, Messages in iCloud, Apple Pay, Home, and Game Center. Information already synchronized to iCloud remains in iCloud; signing out does not delete the account or its cloud data. App Store access requires an Apple Account sign-in, while iMessage and FaceTime may continue with a phone number where applicable. See Apple’s current procedure at Apple Support.

Remove the account before selling, gifting, or trading in
Prepare the device so the next owner sees the setup screen and cannot access your information.
- Back up or transfer first. Confirm that photos, messages, contacts, authenticator data, and other information you need are on the replacement device or in a backup. Unsynchronized data stored only on the old device will be lost when it is erased.
- Remove payment items as appropriate. Review Apple Pay cards, passes, and other personal information.
- Start the erase workflow. In Settings, open General → Transfer or Reset iPhone (or iPad) → Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts to sign out and enter credentials.
- Handle the eSIM prompt. When transferring ownership, follow the option to erase the eSIM profile if it is no longer yours; keep it only when your carrier and transfer plan require that choice.
- Stop at the Hello screen. That is the appropriate handoff point. Do not continue through setup with your account.
Apple says this process removes local photos, contacts, apps, messages, cards, and other content, while data already stored in iCloud remains there. Details are in Apple’s pre-sale checklist.

Do not choose Reset All Settings as a privacy wipe. It resets settings but leaves personal data and apps on the device; Apple explains the distinction at Reset All Settings.

The account owner must authenticate. There is no legitimate owner-free bypass.

- Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or go to https://icloud.com/find.
- Sign in with the Apple Account linked to the old iPhone or iPad.
- Select the device.
- If its data must be protected or it was not erased, choose Erase This Device. If it is offline, the erase starts when it next connects to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- After the erase completes, choose Remove This Device.
A remote erase by itself normally leaves Activation Lock enabled. Removing the device after erasure is the step that allows another person to activate it. Apple documents this sequence in the iCloud User Guide. For a lost device, do not remove it merely to clear your device list; keeping Activation Lock protects it.
Why Find My and Activation Lock matter
Activation Lock is tied to Find My. When Find My is enabled, the device is associated with the Apple Account and requires that account’s password to turn off Find My, erase or reactivate the device, or change ownership. Turning off Find My during a successful on-device sign-out removes Activation Lock. The proper on-device sale erase also disables Find My and Activation Lock.

An erased phone can therefore still display iPhone Locked to Owner if it was erased remotely but not removed from Find My. Apple’s explanations are available at Activation Lock and turning off Find My.

“Sign out is not available due to restrictions”
- Open Settings → Screen Time.
- Tap Change Screen Time Passcode.
- Tap Turn Off Screen Time Passcode and enter that passcode.
- Return to the Apple Account settings and try signing out again.
The Apple Account name is greyed out
- Open Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Under Allow Changes To, tap Accounts and select Allow.
- Review other options set to Don’t Allow and change them where appropriate.
A child or teenager in Family Sharing may need a parent or guardian to authorize the change. A work- or school-owned device may be controlled by Mobile Device Management; contact the organization’s IT department or device manager instead of trying to remove its management. If you forgot a password or passcode
Forgotten Apple Account password
Use Apple’s account-recovery options at Apple Account Support, a trusted Apple device, or another supported recovery method. If the account is locked, inactive, or disabled, contact Apple Support. For an Activation Lock request, Apple may require proof of purchase; see How to remove Activation Lock. Avoid services promising an unofficial Activation Lock bypass.
Forgotten device passcode
This is separate from the Apple Account password. A forgotten passcode generally requires erasing and restoring the iPhone or iPad with recovery mode using a Mac or Windows PC; Windows uses the Apple Devices app. Follow Apple’s passcode recovery instructions. Resetting the device does not necessarily remove Activation Lock, so the linked Apple Account may still be required during activation.
Checklist for buyers of a used iPhone or iPad
- The device has been erased and displays the Hello setup screen.
- Setup does not request the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- It does not show iPhone Locked to Owner or an equivalent Activation Lock message.
- It does not boot to the seller’s passcode screen or Home Screen.
If any check fails, have the previous owner remove the device remotely or return it. A buyer cannot legitimately bypass another person’s Activation Lock. Apple’s guidance is at Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad.
