To remove ads from an older Kindle, sign in to the Amazon account it is registered to, open Manage Your Devices, select the Kindle, and choose Remove offers under Special Offers. Amazon displays the device-specific one-time charge before you confirm. Changing privacy settings or factory-resetting the Kindle does not remove Special Offers.
Remove Special Offers from your Amazon account
Amazon calls Kindle ads “Special Offers.” They can appear as sponsored screensavers while the e-reader is asleep and as sponsored items on the Home screen. For a Kindle bought with ads, Amazon describes removal as a one-time payment covering the difference between the ad-supported and ad-free prices. The amount is shown for that device in the account flow; Amazon’s reviewed help pages do not give one universal current price.
- Sign in to the Amazon account associated with the Kindle and open Manage Your Devices.
- Select Devices, then choose the Kindle e-reader you want to update.
- Under Special Offers, select Remove offers.
- Review the price in the confirmation pop-up. To proceed, select End Offers and Pay the Fee.
Amazon says the account’s 1-Click payment method is charged once when you confirm. Check the amount and device carefully before proceeding.

Find out which Kindle you have
Identify the model before following model-specific menu directions. On Kindles that show the model name in settings, swipe down from the top of the screen and open All Settings > Device Options > Device Info. Menu wording and location can vary with model and software version.
If the model is not listed there, check the device listing in your Amazon account or compare the Kindle’s distinguishing features with Amazon’s Kindle identification guide. The guide covers generations from the first Kindle, released in 2007, through newer devices. These are product release years, not a promise that each model supports the same settings or ad-removal options. Amazon also notes that not every Kindle generation has been available in every marketplace.

Know which setting does what
Special Offers: paid ad removal
The account procedure above is Amazon’s documented route for opting out of Special Offers. Availability is not guaranteed for every older model or marketplace; the account page is where to check whether the option is offered for your registered device.
Device-usage-data privacy: controls data processing, not ads
On supported Kindles, Amazon places the device-usage-data control under All Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Privacy. Turning it off controls processing of the specified device-usage data for marketing and product-improvement purposes. It does not remove Special Offers from a Kindle purchased with them, necessarily stop marketing offers, or change processing related to use of Amazon services on that Kindle. Some devices also provide privacy controls in the Amazon account under Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. Privacy preferences are device-specific, so changing one Kindle does not automatically change settings on your other Amazon devices.

Factory reset: erases and deregisters the Kindle
A factory reset is for preparing a Kindle for gifting or sale, or for certain troubleshooting—not for removing ads. Amazon says it removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, then deregisters the device. Sync anything you need before resetting. On some older models, the reset menu option is named Reset Device; follow the on-screen confirmation prompts.

If “Remove offers” is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Amazon account associated with the Kindle.
- Check that you selected the correct Kindle under Devices.
- If the option still does not appear, contact Amazon Customer Service to ask about that device and marketplace. Do not assume a reset or a privacy change will substitute for ad removal.
