To remove a connected work or school account from a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the account, and choose Disconnect. That removes the device’s connection; it does not delete the organizational account. If the account still appears in OneDrive, Office, Teams, or another app, sign out or unlink it there separately.
Disconnect the work or school account from Windows
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
- Select the connected work or school account and choose Disconnect.
- Confirm the choice if Windows prompts you.
Microsoft Support’s Manage User Accounts in Windows explains that disconnecting “doesn’t delete the account. It removes the sign-in information and data from the device.” The organizational account itself remains with the employer or school.

Why the account may still appear
When you signed in, you may have added the account to Windows and registered the device, or selected an option to sign in to just one app. Microsoft says the device-wide choice can make the account available to desktop and web apps and register the device in the organization’s directory. Choosing No, this app only signs in to that app without adding the account to Windows Settings or registering the device through that choice. Microsoft’s device-registration guidance describes these distinctions.

Check Email & accounts
If you added the account for email, calendar, or contacts, review Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts. This is separate from Access work or school; the available controls can vary by Windows version.
Sign out of Office
In an Office app on a PC, go to File > Account (or Office Account in Outlook) and choose Sign out. Then close all Office apps. Office sign-out does not sign you out of OneDrive. Microsoft notes that signing out removes Office settings and clears the recent-document list; Microsoft 365 may ask you to sign in again to remain activated. See Microsoft’s Office sign-out instructions.

Unlink OneDrive from the PC
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Open Settings > Account.
- Select Unlink this PC > Unlink account.
Unlinking is separate from deleting files. Cloud-only files remain accessible on OneDrive web, while files marked as available on the device remain in the local OneDrive folders. Do not delete the local OneDrive folder as a routine step in removing an account. Microsoft explains how to unlink a PC and what OneDrive availability icons mean.

In Teams, open the profile menu and choose Sign out to end that app’s session. It does not sign you out of other apps or other devices. Microsoft’s work or school account guidance also describes signing out everywhere through Manage beside Account settings, then Sign out everywhere in Overview; this is account-management guidance, not a universal Windows cleanup control. Complete removal may require help from the organization’s IT administrator. Read Microsoft’s Teams sign-out guidance.

Do not confuse disconnecting with deleting a Windows profile
Disconnecting the organization’s account is different from removing a Windows user profile. Microsoft lists profile removal under Settings > Accounts > Other users > select user > Remove. Removing the profile deletes that user’s sign-in information and data from the device. Use it only if you intend to remove that Windows user, and first back up any files you need.
When the organization’s IT administrator must help
A connected work or school account can register a PC in the organization’s directory. Organizations may manage settings, deploy software, enforce security policies, restrict access, or remove data from lost or stolen devices. If Disconnect is unavailable, the PC remains managed, or the organization’s device record needs to be removed or retired, contact its IT administrator. Microsoft describes organization device management.
If you cannot access the PC, Microsoft points to the work or school My Account device list, where you can expand device details and choose Disable lost device. That is a remote lost-device action; it is not the same as clearing every app sign-in from a PC you can still use.
Quick Recap
What to do if a breadcrumb remains
- Check the exact app or Windows account section where the organization still appears, then use that app’s sign-out or account-removal control.
- For browser profiles or third-party apps, inspect the specific app. There is no universal one-click purge established for every browser, credential store, and app.
- Restarting Windows is optional if you want to refresh what the interface displays; Microsoft’s instructions do not say a restart is required or that it erases credentials or organizational records.
- On a managed device, ask IT for guidance before trying to remove organization controls or records.
