The current Dell XPS 14, model DA14260, has a credible college-laptop case if you want a light, premium 14-inch Windows laptop. Dell lists it at about 3 pounds and offers configurations with up to a Core Ultra 7 processor, 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD. But its ports are USB-C-only apart from the headphone jack, its advertised battery figure is a controlled streaming result, and no laptop is a safe fit until you check your course software requirements.
Which XPS 14 is this?
This assessment is about Dell’s current US-listed XPS 14, model DA14260. It is not the 2025 DA14250: the older model’s specifications should not be carried over to the current laptop. Dell’s current DA14260 product page identifies the model and displays its available configurations. Confirm the model number and exact screen option when ordering, since configuration details can vary across the listing.

Is the XPS 14 easy to carry around campus?
Dell lists starting weights of 3.00 lb (1.36 kg) for the 2.8K OLED option and 3.05 lb (1.38 kg) for the 2K LCD option. The listed footprint is 12.19 by 8.26 inches, with height varying by panel. That is a reasonable portability profile for a 14-inch laptop, but the weight you carry depends on the configuration; the figures do not include a charger or other accessories.
Will its ports work with your campus gear?
The DA14260’s listed connectors are three Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C ports, supporting DisplayPort 2.1 and power delivery, plus a universal audio jack. Dell does not list USB-A, HDMI or a card reader among the laptop’s ports.

Before buying, check what you connect in class, at home and in labs: a USB-A flash drive, wired presentation cable, external display or camera card may require an adapter or USB-C hub. If you need one, verify that it supports the specific display output, data transfer or charging functions you use, as well as enough connections for your peripherals.
How long does the XPS 14 battery last?
Dell advertises up to 31 hours of streaming battery life for a 2K-display configuration at 250 nits. Dell attributes that figure to a January 2026 Dell Labs Netflix streaming test using an XPS 14 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 355, Intel Graphics, a 2K LCD, 16 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD, with wireless enabled and brightness set to 250 nits. That test setup differs from the currently displayed base configuration, which uses a Core Ultra 5 325.

The 31-hour result is a vendor-reported benchmark, not a promise of a full day of lectures, web research, video calls or demanding creative work. Dell cautions that actual battery life can be significantly lower and varies with configuration, software, usage, operating conditions and power settings; battery capacity also declines over time. The available information does not establish an independent real-world battery result for this model.
Is the XPS 14 a good fit for your course?
It may be a strong candidate if you want Windows, a portable 14-inch screen and the option of substantial memory and storage. Whether it is suitable for your studies depends on your institution’s and course’s requirements. Check that required applications support Windows 11 and the laptop’s hardware, and confirm any requirements for graphics, memory, storage or ports with your department before choosing a configuration.

- Check software: Confirm that required applications run on Windows 11 and meet their stated hardware requirements.
- Match the configuration: Select memory, storage and display options that suit your course and workload; do not assume the base listing is right for every student.
- Plan for connections: Compare the laptop’s three USB-C ports and audio jack with the equipment you regularly use.
- Budget for the complete setup: Include any necessary adapters or hub when deciding whether the configuration fits your budget.
Verdict: a contender, not a universal college pick
The DA14260 has several traits that make it worth considering for college: a roughly 3-pound starting weight, a 14-inch display and selectable configurations with up to 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD. Its strongest caveats are practical ones: a USB-C-centric port selection, a high and changeable listed price, and a battery headline that describes a specific Dell lab test rather than ordinary student use. Consider it if those trade-offs suit your setup and your course requirements check out—not as an automatic answer for every student.
