If the mark remains, open the page header, select the watermark object, and press Delete. Word for the web can display existing watermarks but cannot remove or change them, so use the desktop app.
Remove a watermark in desktop Word
- Open the document in the Word desktop app.
- Select Design > Watermark > Remove Watermark. In some older or alternate dialogs, choose No watermark instead. Microsoft lists this guidance for Microsoft 365 and Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, including Mac editions; ribbon labels can vary by release. Microsoft’s removal instructions.
- Check the document pages to confirm the mark is gone.
If “Remove Watermark” does not work
A watermark is often stored as an object in the document header, even when it appears in the middle of the page. Select and delete that object directly:

- Double-click near the top of a page to open the header.
- Move the pointer over the watermark until the four-way arrow appears, then click to select it.
- Press Delete. If the document has multiple watermark objects, repeat on the affected pages. Microsoft’s removal instructions and watermark selection guidance describe this header-based fallback.
Remove a watermark in Word for the web
Word for the web can show watermarks already in a document, but Microsoft says it cannot change them or insert new ones. Open the file in desktop Word using Editing > Open in Desktop App, remove the mark there, and save the document. Microsoft’s Word watermark guidance.
If the mark is a background image or hidden header content
Background image
If the unwanted image is being used as a page background rather than a standard watermark, Microsoft’s guidance is to select Design or Layout > Watermark > No watermark. Microsoft’s background-image guidance.

Document Inspector
For broader cleanup of hidden document content, Word’s Document Inspector includes a Headers, Footers, and Watermarks category. Make a copy of the document first: Microsoft cautions that content removed through inspection may not be recoverable. This is a fallback for broader cleanup, not the first step for an ordinary watermark. Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance.
