Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you own an image or have explicit permission to modify it, start by finding its original project or an unwatermarked export. That gives you a clean copy without trying to reconstruct pixels hidden by a mark. If the watermark is on an Adobe Stock preview, license the asset to receive the unwatermarked version. Use Photoshop or Firefly removal tools only when you have the right to alter the image, and review any generated fill carefully.
Choose the cleanest route before retouching
The right approach depends on where the image came from and whether a clean source is available. Prefer recovery or licensing over pixel removal: those options avoid synthesizing replacement content for the area under the watermark.

- Your own generated image or project: Check the app, account, project file, or export settings for the original image or a clean export. Re-exporting avoids reconstructing obscured detail.
- An Adobe Stock preview: License the asset rather than retouching its preview. Adobe says that when you license a watermarked preview, the watermark is removed and you receive the asset at its highest available resolution. Check the asset’s current license terms and confirm the intended use is allowed. Adobe Stock FAQ: Usage and licensing.
- No clean source available: If you have the right to modify the image, use an editing tool to replace the marked pixels. The result is a retouch, not a recovery of the exact pixels that were underneath.
Remove a watermark in Photoshop
Photoshop offers two relevant approaches. Content-Aware Fill replaces a selection using surrounding pixels; the Remove tool can generate a contextual replacement or use a non-generative mode. Neither guarantees a convincing result, especially when the mark covers intricate detail.
Use Content-Aware Fill for a suitable background
- Open the image and select the watermark with an appropriate selection tool.
- Right-click inside the selection and choose Content-Aware Fill.
- Review and adjust the sampling area so Photoshop draws from appropriate surrounding pixels.
- Confirm the fill, then inspect the result at full size. Undo or revise the selection if the replacement is visibly inconsistent.
Adobe documents this workflow as replacing the selected area with surrounding pixels. It may be a useful fit when the nearby background is relatively consistent; it is not a promise of success on detailed textures or overlapping objects. Adobe Photoshop: Content-Aware Fill.

Use the Remove tool for an unwanted mark
- Select the Remove tool in Photoshop.
- Brush over or loop around the watermark.
- Choose how generative AI is used: automatic, generative AI on, or off. The available choice can affect how the replacement is produced.
- If available for your workflow, enable the option to create a new layer so the edit remains easier to review and revise.
- Apply the removal and inspect the result. Keep the original unchanged and revise or undo the edit if the fill damages nearby detail.
Adobe’s current desktop documentation describes these controls, but does not guarantee a particular result. Adobe Photoshop: Remove tool.
Remove text with Firefly Generative Remove
Adobe Firefly’s Generative Remove workflow lets you paint over text and generate a fill informed by nearby image context. Review the replacement closely: it is generated content, not the exact hidden image restored. Use it only for an image you own or have explicit rights to modify. Before editing, save a separate copy or work on a new layer when the tool allows it. Afterward, check the image at its intended viewing size and at close range. Look for repeated patterns, smudges, broken edges, or details that no longer match the surrounding scene. If the fill is conspicuous, try a smaller selection, a different method, or return to the original or licensed asset.

A visible watermark is not the same as provenance information
A visible watermark is a mark people can see on the image. Content Credentials are machine-readable provenance information. Removing a visible mark does not, by itself, establish whether provenance metadata is present or what it says. Adobe advises organizations to assess applicable laws, regulations, and platform policies when deciding whether disclosure is required. Requirements vary by use and jurisdiction; do not imply that AI-generated or AI-edited work is unmodified. Adobe: Content Credentials.
Use removal tools only with permission
Adobe Firefly says, “You can remove watermarks from images you own or have explicit rights to modify.” Adobe also warns that removing watermarks from images you do not own or lack permission to modify may violate copyright law. This is Adobe’s guidance, not legal advice for every jurisdiction. Check the applicable license and get permission when needed before editing.
