Choose a ceiling cassette by matching a room-specific cooling-load calculation to a compatible system, then checking that the unit fits the ceiling and can deliver air across the room. Floor area alone—or a generic BTU-per-square-foot rule—cannot reliably size a cassette. Capacity, ceiling height, sunlight, insulation, occupancy, room layout, and the exact indoor/outdoor equipment pairing all matter.
Start with the room’s cooling load—not a square-foot rule
Measure the room and note its ceiling height, climate, sun exposure, insulation, windows, regular occupancy, heat-generating equipment, and whether it opens into other spaces. Those conditions affect how much cooling the room needs. A qualified HVAC professional can use them to calculate the load and recommend a system whose rated capacity suits the room and expected operating conditions.

ENERGY STAR publishes a room-air-conditioner sizing chart, not a ceiling-cassette sizing method. Its chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling and lists 18,000 BTU/h for 700–1,000 square feet, 21,000 BTU/h for 1,000–1,200, 23,000 BTU/h for 1,200–1,400, 24,000 BTU/h for 1,400–1,500, 30,000 BTU/h for 1,500–2,000, and 34,000 BTU/h for 2,000–2,500. ENERGY STAR’s room-AC guidance also suggests reducing capacity by 10% for heavy shade, increasing it by 10% for a very sunny room, adding 600 BTU/h per regular occupant above two, and adding 4,000 BTU/h for a kitchen. These are adjustments for its room-air-conditioner guidance; do not apply them mechanically to a ductless cassette system.

Why choosing a larger unit “just in case” can backfire
ENERGY STAR warns that an oversized room air conditioner may cool a room before removing enough humidity, leaving it cool but clammy. Manufacturer ranges show that cassette systems come in different capacity classes and ceiling formats, but a product-family range does not tell you what one room needs. For example, Mitsubishi Electric lists its SLZ four-way cassette at 9,000–18,000 BTU/h and its PLA-NL four-way cassette at 12,000–48,000 BTU/h. Its commercial PLFY-P-NFMU family includes capacities up to 48,000 BTU/h. Before comparing models, confirm the ceiling can accommodate the indoor unit. Check recessed depth, opening or grid dimensions, structural support, access above the ceiling, and space for servicing. Mitsubishi describes cassette options for 2-by-2 and 3-by-3 suspended-ceiling grids; verify the exact dimensions and installation requirements in the submittal and manual for the model under consideration.

Use airflow and ceiling-height specifications carefully
Air discharge matters especially in a large or irregular room. Mitsubishi says selected four-way cassette models offer 72 configurable vane patterns, and some models offer optional 3D i-see occupancy sensing. These features may help tailor airflow, but their presence and operation depend on the specific model. Check the product documentation against the room’s shape, obstructions, and seating or work areas rather than assuming a feature guarantees even temperatures. Installation-height guidance is also model-specific. LG’s 2024 product data for the listed four-way cassette models calls for at least 1,500 mm of separation through the airflow direction. It gives the following installation-height values for the model family covered by that document:

- What cooling load do you calculate for this room, and what room conditions and connected spaces did you include?
- Which matched indoor and outdoor models meet that load at the expected operating conditions?
- Will the cassette physically fit the ceiling, with the required support, clearances, and future service access?
- Does the airflow pattern and mounting height suit the room, and are any model-specific high-ceiling settings required?
- What electrical, refrigerant-piping, condensate-drainage, control, and local-code work does the installation require?
- Which efficiency, sound, warranty, and parts details apply to the exact system being quoted?
