What you need before you start
- A video clip with a subject the editor can identify.
- An editor that offers automatic background removal or subject masking.
- A replacement color, image, or video if you want something behind the subject. You can also leave the background removed if the editor and export format support the result you need.
Automatic removal and masking do not guarantee clean edges on every clip. Check the subject’s outline, especially when it moves or has fine details such as hair, and decide whether the result is good enough for your intended use.

Remove the background in CapCut
CapCut documents automatic removal for ordinary footage, separately from chroma key for green- or blue-screen footage. Its desktop and online instructions use different menu paths, and labels can vary by version, device, or region.

CapCut desktop
- Create a project and import your video clip.
- Select the clip, then choose Video > Remove BG > Auto removal, following CapCut’s documented desktop path.
- Let the editor process the clip, then preview the subject’s outline throughout the footage. Look closely at moving edges and fine details.
- If you want a replacement, put a color, image, or video on a layer beneath the isolated subject, using the controls available in your version.
- Export the composition. Choose resolution, quality, and format to suit where you plan to use the video, and confirm which options your installed version provides.
CapCut online
- Import the clip and add it to the timeline.
- Choose Smart tools > Remove background > Auto removal, the path in CapCut’s online instructions.
- Preview the result, add a replacement background beneath the subject if desired, and export with suitable settings.

Automatic removal versus chroma key
Automatic removal attempts to identify the subject in ordinary footage and separate it from the background. Chroma key instead removes a chosen color, commonly green or blue, from footage recorded against that color. You do not need a green screen for the automatic method, but chroma key depends on suitable colored-screen footage.

Check the cutout before exporting
- Scrub through the entire clip, not just a still frame. Watch for edges that break up or change as the subject moves.
- Inspect fine details and areas where the subject meets the background. A preview may reveal problems that are easy to miss at a glance.
- Check the subject against the replacement background, if you added one. A cutout can look different against a new color or moving image.
- Review the exported file in the app or player where it will be used. Confirm that its background and framing look as intended.
When this approach may not be enough
There is no source-supported performance percentage or guarantee that automatic removal will work cleanly on difficult footage. If the outline is unsatisfactory, check whether your editor offers manual mask refinement or try another editor’s documented masking workflow. Premiere’s documented Object Mask is a beta subject-isolation and tracking feature for effects and color corrections; the available description does not establish it as a dedicated one-click transparent-background export tool.
