What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Sign in to your ASUS router, open VPN > VPN Client or VPN > VPN Fusion, then deactivate and delete the profile you do not recognize. If VPN Fusion is available, check its device exception rules too: an unwanted rule can route a device through a VPN even when the profile list alone does not explain the routing. Menu names and controls vary by router and firmware, so follow the manual for your exact model.
Remove the unfamiliar VPN profile
- Connect to your router. Use a device on the ASUS network and open the router’s administration interface at its router address or local IP. If Wi-Fi access or settings are unreliable, connect a computer to the router by Ethernet instead.
- Open the VPN client settings. Look for VPN > VPN Client or VPN > VPN Fusion. ASUS uses both names in its support material; its setup article, updated March 24, 2026, notes that “The VPN Client is actually called VPN Fusion.” The label and available controls depend on model and firmware. - Review the profiles. Check each profile’s name, VPN type, and active or default status. Deactivate and delete the profile you cannot identify. If a profile may belong to work, school, or someone else who manages the router, confirm with that owner before removing it. ASUS says profiles can be edited or deleted in its VPN Fusion FAQ.
- Check VPN Fusion exception rules. VPN Fusion can assign individual devices to VPN connections. Remove any unfamiliar routing rule: on supported interfaces, deactivate the rule, delete it, and select Apply. ASUS’s specific instructions cover the GT-AC5300 and GT-AC2900; do not assume other models use identical screens or steps. ASUS VPN Fusion instructions
- Verify the result. Confirm the unwanted profile and rule are no longer listed, and check that the intended default connection is Internet. Save or apply changes where the interface requires it.
If you cannot remove the setting in the interface
If you cannot access the configuration, no longer trust it, or find that settings reappear, a factory reset is the broader recovery option. It clears router configuration, so expect to set up Wi-Fi and other router settings again. Use the reset procedure for your exact model; physical reset controls and instructions are model-specific. ASUS documents resetting through the settings page when it is accessible and recommends current firmware in its VPN-client troubleshooting guidance. - Consult the exact model’s ASUS manual for the reset procedure.
- After resetting, update firmware using ASUS or ASUSWRT sources—not an unknown download. ASUS’s firmware support guidance explains its official firmware route.
- Run the router’s Quick Internet Setup (QIS) and configure it again with settings you recognize.
Which recovery path should you use?
| Path | Use it when | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Delete the profile and any unwanted exception rule | You can sign in, identify the suspicious setting, and want to preserve the rest of your configuration. | Removes the selected VPN profile or routing rule; other router settings can remain in place. |
| Factory reset, firmware update, and setup again | You cannot access or trust the configuration, or the unwanted settings return. | Clears router settings and requires setup again; exact reset steps depend on the model. |
Neither deleting a VPN entry nor resetting the router establishes that every possible compromise has been eliminated. An unfamiliar profile is a reason to investigate, but ASUS’s cited guidance does not say that it proves malware or identifies how it got there.
Secure the router after recovery
- Set a unique administrator password for the router.
- Review other settings you did not create, including remote administration.
- Use official ASUS firmware and model-specific setup instructions.
These are prudent recovery steps; an unexpected VPN profile alone does not establish that an account or remote-access setting was compromised.
