“How to deactivate a PlayStation account” can mean two different things: removing a console’s activation from your account, or permanently requesting account closure. To move, sell, or replace a console, deactivate that console; this does not delete its data. To stop using PlayStation services and close the account, use the separate closure process and understand its consequences first.
Deactivate an accessible PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts > Other.
- Select Console Sharing and Offline Play > Disable.
This changes the console’s activation and sharing relationship with your account. It does not erase data from the console or damage it. See PlayStation’s console deactivation instructions if your menu differs.

Deactivate an accessible PS4
- On the PS4, open Settings.
- Select Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4.
- Select Deactivate, then Yes.
PlayStation’s support page also covers PS3 and PS Vita/TV, whose activation menus differ from the PS4 and PS5 paths. Follow the platform-specific instructions on the official deactivation page for those systems. Menu wording and availability can vary by region and software version.

Deactivate consoles remotely if you cannot access one
- In a web browser, sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Device Management > PlayStation Consoles > Deactivate All Devices.
This remote option deactivates all consoles attached to the account, not one selected inaccessible console. PlayStation says it can be used once every six months. To sign out of inaccessible consoles, PlayStation advises changing your account password. Deactivating all devices is not account deletion.

What console deactivation changes
Activation links a console to your account for Store purchases and certain sharing benefits. PlayStation’s published account limits are one PS5, one PS4, two PS3 systems, and three PS Vita/TV systems; it says a PS5 and PS4 can both be active at the same time. These are activation limits, not a requirement to close an account when changing consoles.
Close your PlayStation account only if you mean to end the account
Account closure is a separate request with broader consequences than console deactivation. Start with PlayStation’s How to close your account for PlayStation page and follow the regional support process it provides. The US terms say a request can be made through PlayStation Support and recommend having your sign-in ID (email address), online ID, and account security information ready. The US support page also describes closure through PlayStation App; check the current official instructions for your region rather than assuming the process is identical everywhere.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation Network Terms of Service and User Agreement, last revised January 2026, state that “Account termination is irreversible.” The terms say termination ends access to PlayStation services and makes rankings, scores, trophies, virtual items and balances, subscriptions, and certain account-linked information inaccessible. They also describe refund exclusions for specified items and services, including unused wallet balance, except where required by law or expressly provided in the agreement. Closing a family manager account generally results in termination of associated child accounts, subject to exceptions in the terms. Review the current terms and support instructions before submitting a closure request.
