Make the application’s core task work without model inference. Treat AI as an enhancement at a clearly bounded feature boundary, then define and test what users will see when the model is slow, unavailable, or returns an unusable result. If the central transaction cannot complete without AI, it is a dependency in the current design, whatever the code calls it.
How do I decide whether AI can be optional?
Start by naming the user outcome the application must reliably deliver: for example, submitting an order, finding a record, or saving a document. Then classify each AI use by what happens if inference is removed:

- Core: Without the model, the main user outcome cannot be completed. This is a hard dependency unless the workflow is redesigned.
- Assistive: The model improves a workflow, but a safe underlying path remains available without it.
- Convenience: The model adds a secondary benefit that can be disabled without blocking the main task.
This classification gives the fallback a success criterion. AWS identifies failure to identify core functionality as an anti-pattern in dependency-failure planning. Its reliability guidance states that “Application components should continue to perform their core function even if dependencies become unavailable.” AWS Well-Architected guidance on graceful degradation.

Choose the behavior according to the feature’s consequences, not merely what keeps the screen responsive. Possible degraded modes include:

- Use a cached result when its age and source are acceptable for the task; show freshness information where it matters.
- Return a predetermined response only when a generic response remains accurate and cannot be mistaken for current, personalized, or model-generated advice.
- Offer a deterministic non-AI route when it preserves the essential task, even if it offers less convenience or capability.
- Disable only the affected feature when no safe substitute exists, while keeping unrelated functions available.
- Pause or route for human review when an incorrect or incomplete result could have serious consequences.
AWS notes that degraded behavior can mean stale data, alternate data, or no data; the appropriate choice depends on the business need. A fallback is not automatically safe because it is fast. If users could confuse a static or cached answer for a fresh, individualized result, label it clearly or do not serve it. In a consequential workflow with no safe fallback, disclose the limitation and stop the affected action.
How do I keep inference failures from blocking the rest of the app?
Treat each model-provider call as an external dependency with its own latency and availability risks. Bound the time the application waits, avoid unbounded retries, and prevent repeated failures from consuming capacity needed by core workflows. For services where it fits, circuit breaking can stop calls to a failing dependency temporarily; throttling and load balancing can also help contain failure effects. Make key decisions explicit in the design:
- Set a finite timeout appropriate to the user interaction and the provider operation.
- Set limits on retries; account for the possibility that retrying during an outage will amplify load.
- Define when a circuit breaker opens and how recovery is detected, if using one.
- For cached output, define acceptable age and what the application does when that limit is exceeded.
- Decide who owns the choice to return partial results, queue work, disable the feature, or require review.
- Assess the privacy and security consequences of sending the relevant user data to an external model service.
There is no universal fallback policy: the right balance depends on core-task continuity, result correctness and safety, latency, freshness, operational complexity, recovery behavior, and data handling.
How should I test the degraded path?
Keep the failure route simpler than the primary AI-enabled route, and test it directly. AWS advises that failure pathways be tested and “should be significantly simpler than the primary pathway.” Exercise provider outage and throttling, timeout behavior, malformed output, fallback activation, and recovery. Verify that users can still complete core workflows and that recovery does not trigger a surge of retries.

Instrument the boundary between the application and inference service so teams can see both system behavior and user impact. Useful signals include request latency, timeout and error rates, circuit-breaker state, fallback activation, cache age when relevant, and whether the user-visible task completed. A low provider error rate alone does not prove that the application degrades safely.

Reliability is only one part of making AI optional responsibly. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary framework for managing risks associated with AI across design, development, use, and evaluation. NIST says version 1.0 is under revision; check the framework page for its current status. NIST also provides profiles for tailoring the framework to a setting’s requirements, risk tolerance, and resources. Its AI RMF resources page reports participation by more than 240 contributing organizations in framework development; that count describes development participation, not reliability outcomes.

For security verification, OWASP’s Artificial Intelligence Security Verification Standard (AISVS) describes testable requirements for AI-enabled systems. Its project page states that version 1.0 was released in June 2026 and contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. For secure development practices specific to generative AI and dual-use foundation models, NIST SP 800-218A, published in July 2024, augments the Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) 1.1 with AI-specific considerations across the lifecycle. These resources complement—not replace—conventional reliability engineering and application-specific decisions about safe fallback behavior.
