Before removing the mod, protect your save
Make a separate backup of the affected save or world before changing mods. This is important even when the mod only changes graphics: a game may store mod-related information in a save, and removing a mod can prevent that save from loading correctly. Bethesda advises Skyrim players to keep unmodded saves available, while SEGA warns that a Total War campaign may depend on the mods used to start it. Minecraft Help likewise recommends backing up a world before disabling Bedrock add-ons.

Use the game’s own backup or export feature if it has one. Otherwise, follow the publisher’s instructions for locating and copying saves for your particular game and platform. Do not guess at save-folder locations or delete files to make room; folders can contain saves and configuration data as well as mod files. Bethesda’s Skyrim save guidance, SEGA’s Total War mod-removal instructions, and Minecraft’s Bedrock add-on instructions explain why a backup matters in those games.

Keep an untouched recovery copy
- Back up the save or world separately from the game’s live save folder, so a later cleanup or reinstall cannot remove both copies.
- If you are troubleshooting a campaign, preserve a save from before the mod was added if you have one.
- Do not overwrite the only known-good backup with a save made after removing a mod.
A backup makes it possible to test safely; it does not guarantee that a save created with a mod will work after that mod is removed. Bethesda puts the caution plainly: “Playing with modifications to the base game files is a risk and you should always be sure you have unmodded saves to revert to should you encounter issues with modded gameplay.” That is guidance for Skyrim players, but it captures why a separate recovery copy matters before you experiment.

Disable the mod first, then reproduce the problem
Disabling is the safest diagnostic step because it changes whether the game loads the mod without immediately requiring you to remove files. Use the game’s in-game mod menu, launcher, platform content manager, or the manager named in that title’s official instructions. Avoid deleting files from a folder while the game or manager is open.
- Note what is enabled. Record the suspected mod’s name and, if the manager shows it, its version and any other active mods. If the visual issue began after a game update, note that too; an update can make a previously working mod incompatible.
- Disable only the suspected mod. Use the manager’s checkbox, toggle, or disable option. Do not choose a blanket “disable all” action unless you are deliberately testing whether any mod is responsible.
- Apply the change as instructed. Some games require a restart or a reload before a changed mod list takes effect. Follow the game’s prompt rather than assuming the mod is already unloaded.
- Test the same conditions. Reopen the affected save only if you have a backup, or use a safe test session. Revisit the area, scene, or graphics setting that reliably caused the crash or glitch.
- Compare the result. If the problem stops, the mod or its interaction with another mod is implicated. If nothing changes, proceed to the checks below instead of assuming the mod files are still the cause.
Bethesda recommends disabling or removing Skyrim mods when investigating crashes or black screens. Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance recommends unchecking installed mods to see whether the issue persists. For Bedrock add-ons, Minecraft Help specifically advises disabling resource packs or behavior packs individually to isolate a troublesome add-on. Bethesda’s Skyrim PC troubleshooting, Larian’s mod-issues guidance, and Minecraft’s instructions describe these game-specific approaches.
If you have several plausible culprits
Test one mod at a time and change only one variable per test. If disabling the graphics mod fixes the issue, re-enable other mods only if needed to check for a conflict. If disabling it changes nothing, test other plausible candidates in the same controlled way. Pay particular attention to whether a mod has been updated for your current game version and whether it depends on, or conflicts with, another mod. Larian and Bethesda both identify updates or mod compatibility as potential factors; Minecraft’s one-at-a-time approach is useful for isolating an add-on.
Compare candidates by four questions: Does turning this one off change the symptom? Was it updated for the current game version? Does it rely on or conflict with another active mod? Could removing it affect the current save? These checks help distinguish a mod that is independently broken from one that only causes trouble in a particular combination. If disabling one mod makes no difference, do not conclude that every mod is harmless; another active mod or a dependency may still be involved.
A clean test with all mods disabled can help distinguish a mod-related problem from a game-level problem, but it may be unsafe to load a mod-dependent campaign that way. Make the backup first, and use a separate test session if your game permits one. If the title has a supported temporary no-mod or no-Workshop launch mode, use its official instructions rather than improvising a launch command or deleting subscriptions.

If disabling fixes the crash or glitch, remove the mod safely
Once the test points to the mod, uninstall or unsubscribe through the same supported manager or platform interface that installed it. Disabling and uninstalling are not necessarily the same thing: a game may stop loading a mod while leaving its downloaded files in place, and unsubscribing may not remove every file the game can read. SEGA documents this issue for Total War and provides title-specific cleanup instructions.
- Use the manager’s remove or unsubscribe control. Confirm that the mod is no longer enabled or subscribed in that interface.
- Restart the game or launcher if requested. Check the mod list again before testing, so you know whether the removal took effect.
- Follow official cleanup instructions if the problem persists. Only investigate leftover files after checking the publisher’s instructions for your exact game and installation. Locations differ between titles and platforms; never copy a path from an unrelated game.
- Retest before changing anything else. Start a safe test session or use a backed-up save, and check whether the original symptom returns.
For example, SEGA describes deactivating mods or choosing “Deactivate All” in its Total War Mod Manager, unsubscribing, removing relevant leftovers in documented Workshop and AppData locations, and verifying game files afterward. Those instructions apply to the covered Total War setup, not to every game that uses a Workshop or a mod manager. Read SEGA’s instructions before using its cleanup steps.
For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s guidance covers unchecking installed mods and gives game-specific locations for third-party mod files and profiles. It also notes that major game updates, dependencies, and conflicts can affect mods. Use Larian’s instructions for that game rather than adapting its locations to another title. Larian’s Mod Issues page is the reference for those steps.
The source of the mod matters. An in-game catalog, a platform Workshop, a launcher, and a third-party manager may each handle disabling, unsubscribing, and downloaded files differently. Start with the interface that installed or manages the mod, then consult the game publisher’s cleanup instructions for that source and platform. A successful unsubscribe is not proof that all files have been removed, and a leftover-file procedure for one game is not a general Windows cleanup recipe.
If the problem remains after the mod is disabled
A crash or visual glitch that continues with the suspected mod disabled does not prove that the mod was harmless, but it makes other causes more likely. The game may still be loading another mod, the change may not have taken effect, or the original issue may be unrelated to the mod. Check these possibilities in order:

- Confirm the mod is actually inactive. Reopen the official manager and check its status. If the game requires a restart, close and reopen it before retesting.
- Check for other active mods or packs. Test likely candidates individually. A dependency, conflict, or a second visual mod can produce similar symptoms.
- Check compatibility with the current game version. A game update can leave a mod unusable until its creator updates it. Check the mod’s own version information and the game publisher’s compatibility guidance.
- Look for documented leftover-file steps. Follow only instructions written for your game and platform. Do not delete an entire mods, Workshop, profile, or AppData folder as a shortcut.
- Verify the game’s files if the platform supports it. Use the platform’s built-in verification option and the publisher’s procedure. This checks game installation files; it is not a substitute for a save backup or a universal mod-cleanup method.
- Move on to game-level troubleshooting. Check the publisher’s guidance for the specific symptom, platform, and edition, then contact official support if it continues without mods.
For Skyrim on PC, Bethesda’s crash and black-screen page includes separate checks for graphics settings, GPU selection and drivers, launch options, and Steam file verification. Its guidance for Skyrim after mod removal also discusses verifying files and, if crashes continue, reinstalling while preserving the existing game folder and saves first. If the game still fails with mods disabled and documented cleanup complete, stop treating the graphics mod as the only explanation. Follow the publisher’s troubleshooting for the actual crash, black screen, or visual symptom. Bethesda’s Skyrim PC guidance, for instance, also addresses system requirements, graphics settings, GPU selection, drivers, and launch options. If those game-specific checks do not resolve the problem, contact the official support channel and explain that the issue also occurs without mods.
What to do if the save or world will not load
Do not keep trying to load or overwrite your only copy of a modded save. Restore the separate backup if you made one, then consult the game’s support page or the mod author about whether the save depends on the removed content. In some games, a save or campaign may not be usable without the mods it was made with; a clean save or new game may be necessary.

For Skyrim Special Edition, Bethesda’s save-crash guidance recommends uninstalling the recently installed Creation or mod and reloading to test whether it is connected to the problem. It also recommends keeping unmodded saves available and contacting the author about a problem tied to a particular Creation or mod. SEGA cautions that a Total War campaign can be mod-dependent, and Minecraft’s backup guidance applies to worlds using Bedrock add-ons. These differences are why “remove the mod folder” is not a safe universal instruction. First identify whether the mod is managed by the game, a launcher, Workshop, or a separate manager. Then match the official instructions to the exact game, edition, and platform. If the official page does not clearly identify which files are safe to remove, do not guess.
When to stop removing files and ask for help
Stop before manual deletion if the official instructions do not clearly identify the files to remove. A mod folder can sit beside profiles, saves, settings, or other data, and a broad deletion can cause more damage than the original glitch. If the game still fails after its mods are disabled and any documented cleanup is complete, report the issue to the game’s official support channel with the game version, platform, symptom, and the troubleshooting steps you tried. If one particular mod consistently triggers the issue, contact its author with the same details.

The useful distinction is whether the symptom changes when the mod is disabled. A repeatable improvement points toward the mod or a mod interaction; no improvement means it is time to verify the change took effect and investigate other mods or the game itself.
