How to Reload Old Log Files Into ELK Safely

A practical guide to reloading archived logs into ELK: stage files, choose Filebeat or Logstash, force a controlled reread, preserve event time, isolate the destination, and verify every batch.

To make Filebeat read old files from the beginning, stop it, remove the intended Filebeat registry state, and start it again with the archive paths enabled. For a reliable ELK replay, first stage unchanged files, preserve their original timestamps and time zones, parse a small sample, and write the replay to a separate index or data stream. Use Logstash instead of a Filebeat-only pipeline when you need complex parsing, enrichment, routing, or several outputs.

This answers the common questions “How do I make Filebeat read old files from the beginning?”, “Can I replay archived logs into Elasticsearch?”, and “Should I use Filebeat or Logstash for historical logs?” Archived files are new input data: Elasticsearch cannot search them until an ingestion workflow reads, parses, and indexes them.

What “reload old logs into ELK” actually means

ELK is a pipeline, not a restore button. A loose log file on disk is not an Elasticsearch document, so Elasticsearch’s reindex API cannot read it directly. You must create events from the file, assign fields and timestamps, and index those events into Elasticsearch before they can be queried in Kibana.

Elastic describes this as ingesting data: whether you call it adding, indexing, or ingesting, the data must be in Elasticsearch before it can be searched, visualized, or used for insights. The correct workflow depends on where the historical data exists:

  • Loose or compressed files: use Filebeat, Logstash, an Elastic Agent integration, the Elasticsearch document APIs, or Kibana’s single-file uploader.
  • Documents already stored in another Elasticsearch cluster: use a migration method such as remote reindex, snapshot and restore, or a Logstash migration. Do not treat those documents as if they were ordinary text files.

The rest of this guide covers a repeatable file replay, then explains the different approach required when the source is another cluster.

Choose the ingestion method

Pick the simplest component that can produce correct documents. Filebeat is a lightweight file harvester and forwarder. Logstash is a heavier processing and routing layer. The document APIs are appropriate when your records are already structured. Kibana’s uploader is intended for a one-file, non-production test, while Elastic Agent integrations are generally the simplest current option for supported time-series sources.

Source or need Best-fit method What it handles Important limitation
Many archived files with straightforward lines Filebeat File discovery, harvesting, registry state, and forwarding to Elasticsearch or Logstash Complex parsing and multi-destination routing usually belong in Logstash
Stack traces, custom formats, enrichment, routing, or multiple outputs Logstash, often with Filebeat as the shipper Grok parsing, multiline processing, field enrichment, conditional routing, and Elasticsearch output Requires a separate Logstash pipeline and its operational settings
Already structured records Elasticsearch document or bulk APIs Direct submission of valid JSON documents or bulk requests You must generate valid documents and handle batching, errors, and mappings yourself
One-file exploratory test Kibana file uploader Indexes a single file through Kibana Elastic positions this as a non-production test path, not an archive replay system
Supported time-series source with an integration Elastic Agent and an integration Collection and integration-specific ingestion Use only when the source is covered by the available integration
Logs already indexed in another Elasticsearch cluster Remote reindex, snapshot and restore, or Logstash migration Moves existing indexed documents These are cluster-to-cluster operations, not file parsing

Plan the replay before touching Filebeat

Inventory the archive

Make a manifest for every file or archive. Record the filename, date range, host or service, rotation pattern, compression format, and the timezone used when the log was written. Keep the originals unchanged. If a file is compressed, decide whether the selected reader can consume it directly or whether you will decompress a working copy; never alter the only original while experimenting.

Rotation names can hide chronological gaps. A set such as app.log.1, app.log.2, and dated files may not be ordered by event time. Use the event timestamp inside each line as the authoritative time after parsing, and use the manifest to identify missing periods.

Stage files on a reachable host

Copy or mount the archive on a host that can reach the Elastic deployment and, if applicable, the Logstash listener. Check permissions before starting a harvester. The staging filesystem needs enough room for the working files and any decompressed copies, while Elasticsearch needs space for the resulting indices and replicas. Do not point a production harvester at the archive unless you deliberately want historical and live traffic mixed together.

Define an isolated destination

Send the first replay to a dedicated historical index or data stream, or add an explicit field that identifies the replay source. Isolation lets you compare counts, remove a bad load, and test mappings without contaminating live indices. It also makes duplicate detection possible when registry state is reset.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Choose the destination naming and field mapping before loading the full archive. If historical documents must later appear beside live data, plan that migration after validation rather than writing both streams together on the first attempt.

Build a safe, bounded replay workflow

  1. Prepare the manifest and staging path. List files, date ranges, time zones, compression, and expected host or service fields. Confirm the reader can access the path and the destination endpoint.
  2. Choose Filebeat, Logstash, or both. Use Filebeat alone for simple harvesting and forwarding. Put Logstash between Filebeat and Elasticsearch when parsing, enrichment, conditional routing, or multiple outputs are required.
  3. Configure parsing before indexing. Define multiline behavior for stack traces, extract the event timestamp, apply the timestamp’s correct timezone, and map fields consistently. A parser that works for one line can fail on a multiline exception or a daylight-saving transition.
  4. Load one file or a narrow date range. Start with a sample that contains ordinary lines, errors, stack traces, and the oldest and newest timestamps you expect. Do not begin with the entire archive.
  5. Inspect the indexed sample. Check the destination index or data stream, field names and types, event timestamps, host and service values, and the original message. Query for a distinctive message and for the earliest and latest event times.
  6. Increase the range in bounded batches. Add files or dates gradually while watching ingest failures, rejected documents, indexing latency, disk watermarks, and mapping conflicts. Stop when a metric changes unexpectedly and fix the cause before continuing.
  7. Record what was loaded. Keep the file manifest, configuration version, destination, sample counts, and any failed-file list. This record is the basis for rerunning only a failed batch instead of deleting and replaying everything.

Make Filebeat reread old files from the beginning

Filebeat maintains a registry that records how far it has read in each file. If a file was already harvested, changing its modification time or moving it back into the input path does not reliably make Filebeat emit every line again. A full reread requires resetting the relevant registry state.

Elastic’s documented procedure is: shut down Filebeat, delete the registry file, and restart Filebeat. The current Logstash documentation describes the same registry reset as a way to force Filebeat to read all files it is harvesting from scratch.

  1. Stop Filebeat cleanly. Use the service manager or stop the foreground process with Ctrl+C. Confirm that the process has exited before changing its state.
  2. Preserve the existing state. Back up or otherwise record the current registry location and contents. Registry paths differ by installation and packaging, so use the path configured for this Filebeat installation rather than deleting an arbitrary file.
  3. Remove only the intended registry state. Delete the registry used by the replaying Filebeat instance, not state belonging to an unrelated harvester or a live production host.
  4. Verify the input path and destination. Ensure the archived paths are included, the parser is the tested version, and the output points to the isolated historical destination.
  5. Restart Filebeat and watch its logs. Confirm that the files are discovered and that events are being acknowledged by the next component. Begin with one file if possible.
  6. Check for duplicates. Registry deletion intentionally causes rereading. If any events from those files were previously indexed, the replay can create duplicates; use the isolated destination or an explicit replay field to identify and remove or reconcile them.

Never delete registry state on a live production harvester casually. It is a replay operation, not routine maintenance, and it can resend every file still visible to that instance.

Use Filebeat alone or Filebeat with Logstash

Filebeat-only path

A Filebeat-only design is appropriate when each event is already close to the document shape you need and the Elasticsearch output can apply the required ingest processing. Keep the input focused on the staged archive, preserve the original message, and send the events to the historical destination. Test multiline and timestamp handling with a sample before widening the file glob.

Filebeat to Logstash to Elasticsearch

For complex historical data, Filebeat can harvest files while Logstash parses and routes the events. Elastic’s worked pattern uses a Beats input, a Grok filter, and an Elasticsearch output. A representative configuration shape is:

output {

The port, endpoint, authentication, TLS, data stream, pipeline, and index settings in this shape are illustrative. Replace them with the settings required by your installed Elastic version and deployment. Do not copy a localhost endpoint or example port into production without checking the actual listener and security configuration.

Use Logstash conditionals when different files need different parsers or destinations. Keep the original message until validation is complete; it provides a recovery reference when a Grok pattern or timestamp extraction is wrong.

Parsing details that determine whether historical searches work

Multiline events

Stack traces and exception details often span several lines. Configure the reader to join continuation lines with the correct preceding event before parsing. If multiline settings are wrong, one exception can become dozens of documents, or unrelated events can be merged. Include at least one real stack trace in the sample file and inspect the resulting document count and message content.

Event time and timezone

Extract the timestamp written by the application and assign the timezone in which that timestamp was recorded. Ingestion time is when the replay occurs, not when the event happened; using ingestion time places old records in the current time window and makes Kibana visualizations misleading. Be explicit when files from different systems use different zones, and validate events around daylight-saving changes.

Field mapping

Map the same concepts to the same field names and compatible types across batches. A field that is a number in one file and free text in another can produce mapping conflicts and rejected documents. Inspect the first indexed sample before adding a second log format to the destination.

Validate the sample in Elasticsearch and Kibana

Validation should answer four questions: did every intended line become the right number of events, are the documents in the intended destination, do fields have the expected mappings, and do timestamps represent the original events?

  • Query by the original event-time range, not just the ingestion-time range.
  • Search for a distinctive message fragment from the source sample.
  • Filter by a host, service, or archive identifier that should be present.
  • Compare the source sample’s expected event count with the indexed count, allowing for deliberately discarded malformed lines.
  • Inspect multiline messages for accidental splitting or merging.
  • Check the earliest and latest timestamps and verify the displayed timezone.
  • Review ingest failures, rejected documents, mapping conflicts, and indexing latency before increasing the batch.

Kibana’s Discover view is useful for spot checks, while Elasticsearch queries provide repeatable count and range checks. Keep the sample queries with the replay record so a later batch can be compared against the same criteria.

Common failure modes and recovery

Filebeat appears to ignore the archive

Check that the process is stopped before the registry change, that the intended registry was reset, and that the archive path is included in the active configuration. Verify permissions and inspect Filebeat logs for file-discovery or output errors. If the file was already read and the registry remains, a restart alone will normally resume from the recorded offset.

Events appear in the current date

The parser is probably not extracting the application timestamp, or the timezone is missing or wrong. Fix timestamp parsing and timezone handling, then replay into a clean historical destination. Do not try to correct an incorrectly timestamped bulk load with a dashboard filter.

One log line becomes many documents

Review multiline rules against an actual stack trace. The start-of-event pattern must match the first line of each event, while continuation lines must be joined. Re-test with a small file before replaying the affected date range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documents are rejected because of a mapping conflict

Find the field whose type differs between files or batches. Correct the parser or choose a compatible field mapping, then write corrected events to a new isolated destination. Do not continue adding data to a destination whose mapping cannot represent the source consistently.

The replay contains duplicates

Duplicates are expected if registry state was deleted after some events had already been indexed, or if the same archive was loaded twice. Keep replay data isolated, retain a source-file or replay identifier when possible, and compare batches before merging them with live data. Deleting registry state again will not deduplicate anything; it will cause another reread.

Elasticsearch slows down or rejects writes

Pause the replay, inspect indexing latency, rejected documents, disk watermarks, and ingest failures, then resume with smaller batches after the constraint is understood. A historical load should be bounded so it cannot overwhelm the destination or displace live traffic.

When the old logs are already in another Elasticsearch cluster

If the source is an existing Elasticsearch cluster, preserve the documents and metadata through a cluster migration method instead of converting them to text files. Remote reindex rebuilds the destination index from the source cluster and can be more resource-intensive than snapshot restore. Snapshot and restore is often preferable when you control compatible snapshots and need to move whole indices. A Logstash migration is useful when you need to transform, filter, or route documents during the move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the method according to the source and the required transformation:

  • Use remote reindex when the destination should be rebuilt from documents reachable in the source cluster and the required permissions and connectivity are available.
  • Use snapshot and restore when an appropriate repository and compatible snapshot workflow are available and preserving indices is the priority.
  • Use Logstash migration when documents need parsing changes, enrichment, filtering, or routing while they move.

These methods still require destination validation, timestamp checks, mapping review, and a plan for duplicate or partial runs.

Operational checklist

  • Original files are preserved and their date range, timezone, rotation pattern, and compression are recorded.
  • The staging host can reach the required Elastic endpoints and has permission to read the files.
  • The destination is isolated from live writes or carries an explicit replay identifier.
  • Multiline behavior, timestamp extraction, timezone, and field mappings were tested on a representative sample.
  • Filebeat registry state is backed up before any reset, and only the intended instance’s state is removed.
  • The first run covers one file or a narrow date range.
  • Ingest failures, rejected documents, indexing latency, disk watermarks, and mapping conflicts are being watched.
  • Queries verify event-time ranges, distinctive messages, host or service fields, index placement, and document counts.
  • The replay manifest and configuration are retained for repeatability and rollback.

Final decision

For archived files with simple line-oriented records, reset Filebeat’s registry deliberately and replay into a dedicated destination after validating a small sample. Add Logstash when parsing, multiline handling, enrichment, routing, or multiple outputs make a forwarder-only configuration fragile. Preserve the original event time and timezone in every design. If the data already exists as Elasticsearch documents, use remote reindex, snapshot and restore, or a Logstash migration rather than trying to make Filebeat reread a cluster.
