How to Register for GST in India: Documents, Steps, and What to Expect

A practical guide to GST registration in India: check whether you must register, prepare the right records, complete REG-01, and follow the portal’s verification steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply for GST registration online through the official GST Portal’s Services > Registration > New Registration service. The application is Form REG-01: first provide basic details in Part A, then complete the relevant Part B tabs, upload evidence that matches your business and premises, and follow the verification or authentication route assigned by the portal. Before applying, check whether registration is required for your particular supplies, state and circumstances; turnover alone does not settle every case.

First decide whether you need to register

GST registration is not determined by a single turnover figure that applies to every business in India. The Central Goods and Services Tax Act (CGST Act) sets out a general turnover framework in section 22, while section 24 specifies categories in which registration may be compulsory. The applicable result can also depend on the kind of supply, where it is made, the business’s legal form and relevant exemptions or notifications. A supplier may also seek voluntary registration, but should make that choice with an understanding of the obligations that follow.

How to read the turnover figures

Section 22 of the CGST Act states a general threshold of ₹20 lakh and a lower statutory starting figure of ₹10 lakh for the special-category-state provision. It also permits an enhanced threshold of up to ₹40 lakh for qualifying suppliers engaged exclusively in goods, subject to conditions and notification. These are statutory figures, not a universal decision rule: the wording, state, supply circumstances and notifications matter. Check the current Act and applicable notifications against your own facts rather than treating any one figure as a nationwide guarantee that registration is or is not required.

Turnover liability and compulsory-registration cases are different checks

Start by assessing whether section 22 makes you liable based on your circumstances and then check whether a separate compulsory-registration category under section 24 applies. Do not assume that being below a general turnover figure rules out every compulsory category, or that crossing a figure alone answers every question about your case. The CGST Act and current notifications are the relevant authorities; the GST Portal’s general FAQs can help explain the process but should not override current legal text.

Know the application route and prepare before starting

The application is electronic and uses REG-01 on the official GST Portal. The portal manual reviewed on 11 October 2026 describes a common application route for normal taxpayers and categories including composition applicants, casual taxable persons, input service distributors and applicants in special economic zones, subject to category-specific requirements. Select the applicant type that actually applies to you; do not use the normal-taxpayer path as a substitute for checking the conditions attached to another category.

REG-01 is split into Part A and Part B. Part A establishes the applicant’s basic details. Part B collects more extensive business, people, premises and supply information. Organize records before you begin so that the names, addresses and other particulars you enter match the supporting evidence. The exact document requests depend on your constitution, premises and the options presented for your application.

Information and evidence to have at hand

  • PAN and legal name: have the PAN details for the applicant and use the legal name recorded against that PAN. The GST Portal manual states: “PAN is mandatory for registration with GST.”
  • Contact details: prepare an active email address and mobile number for the primary authorized signatory, who is the main contact identified in Part A.
  • People connected with the business: gather the promoter or partner details and authorized-signatory information requested in Part B. If a representative applies or is relevant to the case, provide the information the portal requests.
  • Constitution evidence: prepare evidence of the business’s constitution or registration where it applies to the applicant’s legal form.
  • Premises evidence: identify the documents that fit the actual ownership, tenancy or other occupancy situation for the principal place of business and any additional places.
  • Supply details: be ready to describe the goods or services supplied and provide the classification information requested in the relevant application tab.
  • Authentication readiness: ensure that the people the portal identifies can complete the prompted Aadhaar authentication, if selected, or follow the alternate photo and document-verification instructions.

This is a preparation list, not a universal upload bundle. Use the GST Portal’s registration document checklist and the live prompts for your application to determine what to upload. The official material does not support a blanket claim that every applicant must provide a rent agreement, utility bill, bank statement, cancelled cheque, physical Aadhaar copy or digital-signature token.

Complete REG-01 on the GST Portal

1. Open New Registration and complete Part A

  1. Go to the official GST Portal and choose Services > Registration > New Registration.
  2. Select the taxpayer type, State or Union Territory and district that apply to the business.
  3. Enter the legal name as recorded against PAN and provide the PAN details.
  4. Enter the primary authorized signatory’s email and mobile details, then complete the portal’s validation steps.

Part A is the initial identification stage; keep the contact channels accessible because the application and subsequent instructions may depend on them. If a name or other detail does not align with the PAN record, resolve the mismatch against the underlying records before proceeding rather than entering an informal or trading name where the form asks for the legal name.

2. Complete the relevant Part B tabs

Part B includes tabs for business details; promoters or partners; the authorized signatory and, where applicable, representative; principal and additional places of business; goods and services; state-specific information; Aadhaar authentication; and verification. The portal’s questions and required fields determine which details apply to the applicant. Enter information consistently across the tabs and the records you will upload.

For premises, select evidence that corresponds to how the business actually occupies each address. The checklist and the live upload choices are the practical guide for owned, rented or other premises. If the business has more than one place of business, the manual instructs applicants to provide information and proof for the principal and additional places as applicable. Do not submit an address document for a different location simply because it is readily available.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

The portal manual reviewed for this guide does not describe bank-account details as mandatory fields in the initial application; it indicates that they may be added later through an amendment workflow. Portal rules can change, so follow the live application requirements rather than relying on an older saved checklist. Similarly, verify the current instructions for any entity-specific digital-signature requirement; the general materials do not establish that every applicant needs a DSC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Review the application before verification

Before moving to verification, check the entries against PAN and the supporting records: legal name, business and premises addresses, people’s details, and the declared goods or services. Make sure you have addressed the portal’s required fields and uploaded the evidence that its checklist calls for in your specific case. This final consistency check is especially useful where the business name, occupancy arrangement or location details are represented by different records.

Understand the Aadhaar and verification branches

The authentication path is not identical for all applicants. The GST Portal’s Aadhaar Authentication FAQ describes an Aadhaar route that may use an OTP link or may send selected applicants for risk-based biometric verification. The portal can identify selected promoters or partners and the primary authorized signatory for the required steps. Follow the instructions issued for the application rather than assuming that every applicant will receive the same kind of appointment or authentication request.

If Aadhaar authentication is selected

Complete the Aadhaar step within the period stated in the portal’s message. The GST Portal FAQ says: “You need to verify your Aadhaar details within 15 days from submission of Part -B of REG-01 or else the Aadhaar authentication link will expire.” In an OTP flow, use the link and complete the prompted authentication. If the application is routed for biometric verification, attend the designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) and complete the biometric and any document-verification steps requested for the people selected by the portal.

The FAQ describes the relevant authentication link as having a 15-day window. Where biometric or document verification is required, the necessary steps must also be completed for the application to proceed. An uncompleted mandatory authentication or verification step can prevent generation of the Application Reference Number (ARN), so do not treat submission of Part B as proof that all required actions are finished.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not opt for Aadhaar authentication

The portal FAQ describes an alternate route involving photo capture and document verification at a designated GSK. The portal provides centre and appointment information. Use the instructions sent for the application to identify the location and any required next steps; in-person verification is not a universal requirement for every applicant, but it is part of this described alternate route.

Deadlines and what they mean

Situation or milestone Timing described in the official materials Practical meaning
General registration application Generally within 30 days from the date the person becomes liable under the Act Establish when liability arose under the rules that apply to the case; do not treat the date you decided to apply as the starting point.
Casual or non-resident taxable person Generally at least five days before commencing business Plan the application ahead of the intended start of business, using the rules applicable to that applicant category.
Application filed within the general 30-day period Registration generally takes effect from the date liability arose The effective date is not necessarily the date the certificate is granted.
Application filed after the general 30-day period Registration generally takes effect from the date registration is granted A late application can therefore have a different effective date from a timely one.
Applicable Aadhaar authentication link 15 days from submission of Part B, according to the GST Portal FAQ Complete the authentication promptly; an expired link or outstanding mandatory verification can delay the application’s progress or prevent ARN generation.

The 30-day and five-day periods are general statutory timing rules described in section 25 of the CGST Act; the effective-date treatment is described in the registration rules. Applicability depends on the applicant’s circumstances and category. If you are unsure when you became liable or which category applies, obtain advice on those facts rather than choosing a date based on convenience.

After submission: retain the ARN and monitor the application

Once the required validation and submission steps are complete, retain the ARN and check the application status through the portal. Monitor the registered email and mobile channels as well, because the process may require an additional response or action. If the portal requests clarification or further verification, follow the notice and its instructions; the general sources do not establish a single response pathway that fits every kind of query.

CBIC FAQ material gives general processing expectations, but it does not justify promising an approval date for an individual application. Officer review, a request for clarification, and authentication or document-verification steps can affect how long a case takes. Distinguish any general published expectation from a guaranteed service deadline: the official materials reviewed do not establish a fixed approval time for every applicant.

Common preparation errors to avoid

  • Choosing a threshold without checking the supply and state: a turnover figure alone may miss a compulsory-registration category or a relevant exception or notification.
  • Entering a name that does not match PAN: Part A asks for the legal name as recorded against PAN, so distinguish that from a trade name when completing the form.
  • Using the same premises proof for every situation: evidence should match the actual occupancy arrangement and the address being declared; follow the checklist for each place.
  • Assuming Part B submission completes every task: authentication, biometric attendance or document verification may remain outstanding, depending on the route assigned.
  • Waiting to act on a verification message: the applicable Aadhaar link has a stated 15-day period, and the FAQ warns it expires after that period.
  • Assuming a universal approval date: processing can be affected by officer review and follow-up requirements, so monitor the ARN and portal status instead of planning around an unsupported guarantee.
  • Preparing documents that the portal has not asked for while missing the relevant ones: use the current checklist and application prompts, since constitution and premises facts determine the appropriate evidence.

Which official materials to consult

Use the GST Portal’s “Apply for Registration Normal Taxpayer” manual for the REG-01 application structure and the portal’s document checklist for evidence relevant to the applicant’s constitution and premises. Consult the GST Portal Aadhaar Authentication FAQ for the authentication branches and the stated 15-day link window. For legal liability and filing timing, refer to the current CGST Act, particularly sections 22, 24 and 25, and the applicable registration rules and notifications. Portal labels and fields can change, and general FAQ material may not reflect every later legal amendment, so use the current portal and current statutory text where they differ.
