To connect it, use the nameservers or DNS records specified by your website host. The exact records depend on your hosting setup, and .si delegation requires at least two working nameservers that pass the registry’s checks.
1. Choose a .si name and check that it is available
Search for your preferred name through a registrar’s .si search tool or the Register.si registrar directory. Availability can change, so confirm the name again when you place the order.

Under Register.si’s registration rules, a name must be available and not reserved, and it must:
- Be 2–63 characters long in its textual and/or binary representation.
- Use permitted characters: Latin letters, digits, hyphens, and specified internationalized-domain letters.
- Not start or end with a hyphen.
- Not have consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions.
2. Register through a registrar
You register a .si domain through a registrar, not directly with the registry. The registrar manages the domain for you and submits domain transactions to the registry. Use the official directory to find registrar options; Register.si does not rank them or establish a universal best choice.
#1 Best Overall
Before choosing, compare each provider’s current registration and renewal prices, DNS controls, account recovery and security, support, and transfer process. Those are practical comparison criteria, not an official registry rating.
Enter accurate registrant details and use an email address you can access. Register.si says the holder is responsible for keeping its information complete and current, and that communication problems can put a domain at risk. Make sure the domain is registered to the person or organization that should control it, rather than automatically leaving the named holder as a developer or hosting provider.
3. Connect the domain to your website
First ask your website host or DNS provider how it expects the domain to be configured. You can either use the host’s nameservers or keep DNS with a separate provider and add the records the host specifies. A common setup uses an address record for the bare domain (also called the apex) and may use a CNAME for www, but the required names and values vary. Do not guess them: follow the instructions for your hosting service.

- If the host provides nameservers: enter the supplied nameserver names in the domain’s nameserver settings at your registrar, then save the change.
- If you are keeping DNS with another provider: add the host’s specified records in the active DNS zone. Check separately whether the bare domain and
wwware both configured. - If you use email on the domain: preserve or recreate the email provider’s MX and related records in the active DNS zone when switching nameservers. Get the exact values from that provider.
Registrar menus differ, so look for the domain’s nameserver or DNS settings rather than relying on a universal click path. Register.si’s DNS check guidance describes the registry’s delegation tests; it does not specify the records for an individual web host.

4. Make sure the .si delegation can pass its checks
Before adding a domain to the .si zone, Register.si requires its authoritative nameservers to pass pre-delegation tests. The delegation needs at least two NS records. Nameservers must answer queries over both UDP and TCP on port 53, respond authoritatively, and provide consistent delegation and zone data; glue records must also be consistent where applicable.
If you use a managed host’s nameservers, the provider should handle these server-level requirements. If delegation fails, run Register.si’s Zonemaster DNS check. The registry says a report containing an ERROR or CRITICAL prevents delegation. Its checking frequency changes after a nameserver change, and adding or removing a nameserver resets that checking regime.
5. Allow for DNS updates and caches
Since March 15, 2025, Register.si has updated the .si DNS zone hourly, replacing its previous every-other-hour cadence; see the registry’s DNS update announcement. This is the registry’s publication schedule, not a guarantee that every public resolver or browser will show the new destination exactly one hour after you save a change. Resolver caches and your host’s configuration also affect when the site works for visitors.
6. Know when a registration can be cancelled
Register.si allows a return within 16 days after registration only while the domain remains inactive. The registry treats submission of nameservers to its activation systems as activation, so configuring nameservers can make the registration ineligible for return. Read your registrar’s contract and refund terms before paying as well; its policies may have their own conditions.
Quick Recap

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- The domain is registered, but the site does not load: confirm that the registrar’s nameserver setting matches the host’s instructions, check the required records in the active DNS zone, and allow for registry publication and DNS caching.
- Delegation fails: review the Zonemaster report for ERROR or CRITICAL, confirm there are at least two NS records, and ask the DNS provider to check reachability on UDP and TCP port 53 and consistency of authoritative NS and SOA data.
wwwworks but the bare domain does not, or vice versa: check with the host which records it requires for each name. One record does not necessarily configure both.- Email stops working after a nameserver change: check that the active DNS zone contains the email provider’s MX and related records, using values supplied by that provider.
