To refresh Pokémon GO’s game data, open Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data. Niantic lists this as a troubleshooting step for both iOS and Android; it may help with gameplay problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Afterward, check whether Adventure Sync is still enabled.
Refresh Pokémon GO game data
- Open Pokémon GO and tap the Poké Ball menu.
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to Advanced Settings.
- Tap Refresh Game Data and follow any on-screen prompt.
Niantic gives the same path for iOS and Android. The company says refreshing can resolve a variety of gameplay issues, but does not promise it will resolve a particular problem.

Check Adventure Sync after refreshing
Refreshing game data may turn off Adventure Sync. If you use it, return to Settings and confirm that it remains enabled. Niantic describes Adventure Sync as an optional setting; distance tracking can also depend on your phone’s sensors, location permissions, and a working connection to Apple Health or Google Fit. For a general gameplay problem
- Check for a Pokémon GO update in your device’s official app store.
- Confirm that your internet connection is reliable.
- Set your device’s date and time to update automatically.
- For platform-specific follow-up, use Niantic’s current iOS guide or Android guide; device instructions can vary.
For a battle that freezes
Niantic’s battle-freeze guidance recommends restarting the app or device first. If the freeze persists, try Settings > Advanced Settings > Clear Cache, then reinstall the app if needed. Clearing the cache is separate from refreshing game data, and Niantic warns that it resets adventure mode settings; reconfigure those settings afterward. Follow the battle-freeze instructions for the current steps.
For a login or authentication failure

What Refresh Game Data does—and what is not specified
Niantic presents Refresh Game Data as an in-game troubleshooting control. Its official guides do not explain exactly which data it refreshes, what local files or caches it changes, how much data it downloads, or how long the action takes. Treat it as a possible fix rather than a reset with a fully documented scope. If the issue continues, use the official troubleshooting article for that symptom or contact support through the game.
