APX’s runtime skills and the bundled skills installed for external tools are separate catalogs, so editing one may not change the other. For a linked development checkout, a contributor article recommends apx skills sync to refresh external tools’ global skill directories—but verify that command exists in your current checkout before relying on it.
Find out which APX skill catalog is stale
Start with the consumer that is showing old instructions: APX’s own runtime, or an external coding assistant. The APX contributor article distinguishes two source locations: src/core/runtime-skills/ for APX’s runtime and skills/ for the bundled catalog supplied to external tools. Editing the wrong catalog will not update the consumer you are checking. APX contributor article

Once you know which catalog the consumer uses, locate the Markdown file in that source. A change to a source file does not by itself establish that a previously installed external copy has been refreshed.
Refresh an external assistant’s global skill copy
For changes from a linked development checkout that need to reach external tools’ global skill directories, the contributor article recommends apx skills sync. The official CLI reference available for this workflow documents apx skill install, but not apx skills sync. Treat sync as contributor guidance, not a command guaranteed to exist in every APX version; check the instructions or available commands in your current checkout before running it. If the consumer is APX’s own runtime, an external-tools sync is not the fix for an edit made in the wrong catalog. Check the runtime source path and the mechanism your checkout uses to make runtime changes available.
Choose the command that matches the task
| Operation | Documented or recommended purpose | Scope and caution |
|---|---|---|
apx skills sync |
A contributor article recommends it to refresh external tools’ global skill directories. | Confirm it is available in your checkout; it is not documented in the CLI reference cited here. Contributor guidance · CLI reference |
apx skill install |
Installs Markdown skill references, MCP configuration, and hooks. | Supports project or global installation and a custom skill path. Official CLI reference |
apx update |
The contributor article describes this as upgrading to a published package. | It warns that this can replace a global link to a development checkout; it is not the cited skill-copy refresh operation. Contributor article on updates |
apx upgrade |
The official CLI reference lists this as the self-update command. | It is an APX upgrade operation, distinct from installing or refreshing skills. Official CLI reference |
Use apx skill install when you need an installation
The official CLI reference describes apx skill install as the operation for installing skill files, MCP configuration, and hooks to a project or globally. It documents --global and --path options; its example uses .agents/skills/apx as a custom Codex path. Consult the reference for the exact syntax supported by your installed version rather than assuming that install is interchangeable with the contributor-recommended sync workflow. Avoid replacing a linked development checkout by mistake
Do not use apx update as a shortcut for copying edited Markdown into an external assistant’s skill directory. The contributor article describes the update implementation as installing a published version and warns that it can replace a global link to your development checkout. If the goal is to propagate edits from that checkout, verify and use the relevant skill-copy workflow instead. Contributor article on updates
The official CLI reference separately lists apx upgrade as the self-update command. That is still an upgrade operation, not the documented skill installation command. Official APX CLI reference

- The Kita features fewer stitched panels and a tough TPU shield called Armor-Tech to keep moisture out and protect your toes while you’re billy-goating in the rocks.
- The Dual-Dial BOA Fit System includes a specially-developed External Heel Lock – controlled via the tongue dial – to keep your foot firmly in place, while the lower part of the boot can be tightened using the side dial.
- Our Transition Zone tech seamlessly connects the Kita's sole to the Exo Spine, accelerating response and preventing damage to the back of the boot when entering or exiting the binding.
Check what changed in the consumer
After updating the relevant destination, check the assistant or runtime that was stale. The available documentation does not establish a universal reload step for external coding assistants, so reopen or reload the skill context only if that consumer’s own documented behavior calls for it. If old instructions remain, verify the source catalog and installed destination first, then confirm whether your checkout supports the sync command.
