Docker Compose “Init Containers”: What the Official Docs Actually Support

Docker’s official Compose lifecycle guide documents post-start and pre-stop hooks, but not the claimed pre-start hook. Check version support and ordering before removing migration services.

Docker’s official Compose lifecycle-hooks guide documents post_start and pre_stop—not the pre_start hook described in the claim that Compose now has init containers. That distinction matters if you plan to remove separate migration or seed services: the reviewed official documentation does not confirm that the proposed steps run before your app starts.

What Docker officially documents

Docker’s Using lifecycle hooks with Compose guide describes hooks that separate certain tasks from a container’s normal entrypoint and command. It covers two hook types:

  • post_start runs after the container starts. Docker says its execution time is not fixed and that it has no ordering guarantee relative to the container entrypoint.
  • pre_stop runs before the container stops.

The guide lists Docker Compose 2.30.0 as the minimum for the lifecycle hooks it documents. It does not document pre_start, so its contents do not establish that a setup task can be guaranteed to finish before the application starts.

What the “init containers” article claims

The article says it replaces separate migration and seed services with ordered pre_start steps attached to the application service. Its author reports that the steps run in temporary containers, can use a separate image, and inherit the service’s network, environment, and mounts. The article also says dependencies are honored before the first step and that the app starts only after the steps succeed. These are the author’s claims; the lifecycle guide above does not verify the syntax or behavior.

The article identifies Compose 5.3 as the feature’s release and says the experiment used Compose v5.5.1 and Engine 29.7.2. Those version claims are not established by the reviewed lifecycle page. Check Docker’s official reference or release notes for the exact Compose version you run before relying on them.

What the author says happened when steps ran

The author reports that steps run again after the service container is recreated, after a step definition changes, or after a previous failure. The author also says failed hook containers remain available for inspection, while successful output is not retained in Compose output or normal Compose logs. Treat these as reported observations, not documented guarantees; the reviewed official guide does not confirm them.

How to decide whether to remove migration or seed services

Do not replace a working migration or seed pattern based only on the pre_start claim. First confirm that the exact Compose version in your environment officially supports the syntax and ordering you need. Then verify the operational details that affect deployment safety:

  • Whether setup is guaranteed to finish before the app entrypoint runs.
  • When setup runs again, including after container recreation or a failed attempt.
  • How logs and failed setup containers can be inspected and retained.
  • What happens when multiple app replicas start or restart concurrently.
  • How setup failure affects application startup and recovery.
  • Whether the feature is supported by the Compose version used in every deployment environment.

In particular, post_start is not a substitute for a guaranteed pre-start migration: Docker explicitly says it has no guaranteed ordering relative to the entrypoint. The reviewed documentation therefore does not support treating either documented hook as proof of the article’s claimed pre-start behavior.

How much weight to give the timing figures

The article reports three-run local timings of 3.9 seconds with no steps, 5.2 seconds with two pre_start steps, and 6.7 seconds for the older pattern. These are the author’s measurements on one unspecified laptop setup, not a published benchmark. They cannot establish how the approach will perform on another machine or deployment.
