To improve a photo’s framing, crop it; to correct a slight tilt, use Straighten; and to turn a sideways image, use Rotate. On iPhone, you can make these adjustments in Apple Photos or use Google Photos. Google Photos on Android also documents Perspective and AI-based Auto frame. The exact controls vary by app and version, so check the crop preview before saving.
Know which adjustment you need
These tools solve different problems. Choosing the right one helps avoid changing more of the image than intended.

- Crop or reframe: Move the crop boundaries to change what remains visible. Use this when the subject is off-center, distracting edges need to go, or you want a different composition.
- Straighten: Make a small orientation correction, such as leveling a tilted horizon. It adjusts the image’s angle rather than simply turning it a quarter-turn.
- Rotate: Turn an image by 90 degrees when it is sideways or oriented the wrong way.
- Perspective: Adjust angle and depth. Google Photos for Android documents this separately from Straighten.
- Aspect ratio: Set the proportions of the crop when the destination calls for a particular shape. A preset can change how much of the original image fits in the frame.
Apple describes its iPhone editing controls this way: “You can straighten a photo or video, or tilt it vertically or horizontally.” Apple’s iPhone guide to cropping, rotating, flipping, and straightening covers those adjustments.

Crop and straighten a photo in Apple Photos on iPhone
- Open the photo: In Photos, select the image you want to adjust.
- Open the crop controls: Tap Edit, then tap Crop.
- Reframe: Drag the crop frame’s corners or pinch to set the composition. The crop initially keeps the original aspect ratio. Unlock the ratio control if you want to change it; presets include Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, and 5:7.
- Correct a tilt: Tap the straighten or tilt control below the frame, then drag its slider. Apple documents straightening and vertical or horizontal tilt adjustments.
- Check the result and finish: Inspect the full crop, then tap Done. If you later want to undo the edit, reopen the image, tap Edit, and choose Revert.
Apple’s guide also covers rotating and flipping photos in the crop-and-edit workflow. Use the rotation control for an image that needs a quarter-turn rather than trying to level it with the straighten slider. See Apple’s documented Photos controls.

Crop, straighten, or rotate in Google Photos on Android
- Select the image: Open Google Photos and tap the photo you want to edit.
- Open the crop tools: Tap Edit, then Crop.
- Set the frame: Drag the crop handles, or choose an aspect ratio if you need specific proportions.
- Choose the correction that matches the problem:
- Tap Straighten for a slight orientation correction.
- Tap Rotate for a 90-degree turn.
- Tap Perspective to adjust angle and depth.
- Consider Auto frame if the image is too tightly cropped or poorly framed. Google says this AI feature can recompose the image or fill or expand image areas.
- Review and save: Check the crop and any generated background area carefully. Tap the checkmark, then tap Save.
Google’s Android instructions list crop, Straighten, Rotate, Perspective, Auto frame, Aspect ratio, and Mirror under the crop workflow. The controls’ availability and on-screen presentation can differ by device or app version. Consult Google Photos Help for Android if your screen does not match these steps.
Use Google Photos to edit on iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Photos and select the photo.
- Tap Edit, then use the crop controls.
- Drag the crop handles or choose an aspect ratio to change the frame. Use Straighten for a small tilt, or Rotate for a 90-degree turn. Google’s iPhone and iPad help also documents Flip.
- Confirm the adjustment and save. Review the result before you finish.
Google documents this crop workflow for iPhone and iPad, but its tools and layout are not necessarily identical to the Android version. See Google Photos Help for iPhone and iPad.

How to choose an aspect ratio without losing the composition
An aspect ratio sets the crop’s proportions. If you keep the original ratio, the frame stays proportioned to the photo as it was captured. Selecting a preset changes the shape of the frame, which may exclude part of the image or require you to reposition the crop around the subject.

- Start with the subject and any details that must remain visible.
- Choose a preset only when you need its shape, such as a square crop or a 9:16 frame.
- Move the crop frame to include the important content, then inspect every edge before saving.
Apple’s Photos crop workflow starts by keeping the original aspect ratio and offers Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, and 5:7 presets. Google Photos documents aspect-ratio controls on Android and crop-ratio options on iPhone and iPad; the available choices depend on the app interface.

Check the image before you save
- Look at all four edges: Make sure the crop has not cut off a face, object, or other detail you intended to keep.
- Check the horizon and vertical lines: A small tilt is a Straighten adjustment; an image turned sideways needs Rotate.
- Review generated areas: If you used Auto frame, inspect the filled or expanded background rather than assuming it matches the original scene.
- Confirm the framing at the destination shape: A crop that looks balanced at one ratio may not include the same content at another.
If a control is missing or the result looks wrong
- You cannot find a named tool: Check that you opened Edit and then Crop. Google notes that Android tool availability and presentation can differ by device or app version.
- The subject is still tilted after rotating: Rotate is for a 90-degree turn; use Straighten for a small angle correction.
- The crop keeps the original shape: In Apple Photos, the crop initially retains the original aspect ratio. Unlock the ratio control to choose a different shape.
- The photo feels too tight after selecting a preset: Reposition the crop boundaries and check whether the important edges remain inside the frame.
- You want to undo an Apple Photos edit: Reopen the photo, tap Edit, and tap Revert. For other save behavior, follow the controls shown in your app version.
