1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo reformat a disk, first copy anything you need elsewhere, then select the correct disk or volume in the operating system’s format utility and confirm only when you are ready to erase it. The steps depend on whether you are formatting a data drive or the disk that runs the operating system.
Before you format: protect your data and identify the target
Formatting erases the selected disk or partition. Leo A. Notenboom of Ask Leo! puts it plainly: “Formatting a drive erases everything on it, so be certain that’s what you want.” Assume an accidental format cannot be undone; preserve needed files somewhere else before you begin.

- Confirm the drive by its name, capacity, and contents—not only by a drive letter or connection type.
- Check whether you are formatting a whole physical disk or just a partition/volume. What appears as a drive in Windows can be only one partition on a physical disk.
- Do not apply these PC steps to a phone just because it is connected by USB. Phone storage may not appear as a disk; manage it through the phone’s own interface.
The Windows steps below reflect Ask Leo!’s guide; Windows labels and options can vary by release. The Mac steps follow Apple Support’s Disk Utility instructions.

Reformat a data drive in Windows
Use File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and locate the intended internal or external disk, USB flash drive, or memory card.
- Right-click the drive and choose Format.
- Review the format dialog, including the file system and any other options. Unless you have a specific need for a different file system or allocation-unit size, the defaults are usually appropriate.
- Choose Start only after verifying that this is the drive you intend to erase.
Use a command line
Ask Leo describes using the Format command in Command Prompt or PowerShell. Identify the correct drive letter first. The source’s example uses G:; it is illustrative, not a drive letter to copy blindly. The command defaults to a full format, while adding /Q requests a quick format. Formatting from a command line can make a wrong-target mistake especially easy, so verify the letter and drive contents before running a command.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
If you mean the Windows system drive
The Windows installation currently in use—typically on C:—cannot be formatted with the ordinary in-use methods above. Reformatting it is part of reinstalling Windows or installing another operating system. Formatting it without reinstalling would leave the computer without its operating system.
Reformat a storage device in macOS
Apple’s Disk Utility workflow erases and reformats a selected storage device or volume. These steps can permanently remove its data, so make a separate copy of anything you need first.

- Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices.
- In the sidebar, select the storage device at the top of its hierarchy if you intend to erase the device itself. A volume-level selection targets that volume instead.
- Click Erase, then enter a name and choose a format. When the Scheme menu is available, choose GUID Partition Map if that is appropriate for your intended use.
- Review the selected device, format, and scheme, then click Erase to proceed.
If you do not see a Scheme menu, Apple notes that you may have selected a volume rather than the physical storage device. Apple identifies APFS as the file system introduced with macOS 10.13; APFS volumes can grow and shrink within a container. See Apple’s Disk Utility User Guide for Mac-specific format context and instructions to erase and reformat a storage device.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A quick format clears the file listing and performs format-related housekeeping without overwriting the file data across the disk; in some cases, data may remain recoverable. A full format takes longer and, in Ask Leo!’s description, overwrites the whole disk, making recovery more difficult.

For ordinary reuse when you are keeping the drive, a quick format is generally the faster choice. Before giving away, donating, or disposing of a disk, use a deliberate erasure approach suited to that storage technology rather than treating a format as a guaranteed secure wipe.
On a Mac, Apple says Disk Utility’s secure-erase options are unavailable for SSDs. Apple advises considering FileVault encryption when beginning to use an SSD for greater security. For Mac trade-in or transfer workflows, Apple points to Erase Assistant on Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with a T2 chip.

Choose a file system for the devices that need the disk
Start with the computers and devices that must read and write the disk. If you have no special compatibility or feature requirement, use the format utility’s default. Ask Leo!’s guidance distinguishes these common choices:
| File system | When it may fit | Compatibility consideration |
|---|---|---|
| NTFS | Internal disks or drives expected to interact only with Windows; Ask Leo notes security and journaling features. | Best suited to a Windows-only workflow in this guidance. |
| exFAT | Interchange between systems, with support for larger disks than older FAT variants. | Check whether each non-Windows computer or device you plan to use supports it. |
| FAT32 | External disks used with computers, phones, or cameras, as described by Ask Leo. | That is not a guarantee every current device supports it. |
| APFS | Mac storage; Apple describes APFS volumes as able to grow and shrink within a container. | Apple introduced APFS with macOS 10.13; consult Apple’s Disk Utility guidance for the options available for your Mac and intended use. |
The allocation-unit size sets how much disk space is assigned in chunks. Smaller units can suit many small files; larger units may suit fewer, larger files. Most users should keep the utility’s default rather than changing it without a specific need.
