To refill an ink tank printer cleanly, confirm the exact ink bottle and color for your printer, protect the work area, and follow the model’s own instructions for seating and handling the bottle. Fill only to the marked maximum, then recap and store any remaining ink upright. Bottle designs differ, so never force a bottle or assume every printer fills the same way.
Before you open the ink bottle
Check the printer and ink match
Find your printer’s exact model in its manual or manufacturer support page, then confirm the required ink bottle part number and color. Epson says to use the correct bottle part number, and its bottles are keyed by color; HP’s cited Smart Tank instructions also specify official HP ink bottles. Protect the area and yourself
- Work on a stable surface and place paper beneath or around the tank if your manual recommends it. Epson’s M105/M205 guide specifically suggests paper under the tank area to catch spills: M105/M205 User’s Guide.
- Consider disposable gloves. Epson recommends them to help avoid staining your hands.
- Keep the bottle upright, and do not shake or squeeze it unless the instructions for your exact model say otherwise. Open it only when you are ready to fill.
- Keep ink, bottles, and caps away from children. If ink gets on skin, Epson advises washing thoroughly with soap and water; if it gets into eyes, flush immediately with water. See Epson’s Ink Safety Precautions.
How to refill the tank
- Open the right tank. Follow the printer’s instructions to open the tank cover and the cap for the color you are refilling. Match the bottle to the tank’s label or color marking; do not rely on memory alone.
- Seat the bottle as designed. Use the fit and position described in your model’s manual. One Epson procedure calls for inserting the bottle straight into the filling port; a Brother procedure says to seat the nozzle firmly and keep it close to the tank opening. If the bottle does not fit naturally, stop and recheck the model and ink rather than forcing it.
- Follow that model’s flow instructions. Bottle handling is not universal. Epson’s cited procedure says not to squeeze the bottle and describes an automatic stop at the upper line. Brother’s cited guidance says squeezing its bottle on both sides can speed filling. Use only the instruction for your printer: Brother’s refill instructions.
- Stop at the marked limit. Watch the tank’s upper or maximum line and stop there. Do not fill past it. Epson warns that removing and reinserting a bottle after the upper line is reached may cause leakage; Brother also cautions against exceeding its maximum mark.
- Close everything securely. Remove the bottle as directed, recap it, and store any remaining ink upright. Close the tank cap and cover. If the printer displays a refill or ink-level prompt, complete the on-screen steps for that model; some Epson procedures, for example, begin from a Maintenance > Fill Ink menu.
How to clean up an ink spill
Act promptly. Epson’s Ink Safety Precautions guidance says: “To prevent the ink from spreading, blot the spill with a dry cloth, then wipe it with a damp cloth.” Ink is harder to remove after it dries and may permanently stain clothing or belongings. Avoid solvents or other chemical cleaners unless the printer or fabric manufacturer specifically recommends them.

Why the exact model instructions matter
Ink tank printers differ in bottle-to-port fit, how the ink flows, whether squeezing is allowed, and whether the printer asks you to confirm a refill or set an ink level. For instance, an automatic stop on one Epson model does not mean another brand’s bottle should be handled the same way. Keep the printer manual beside you and treat its bottle and tank directions as decisive.
