For a practical battery-life boost, start by lowering screen brightness and shortening screen timeout. Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, restrict background activity only for apps that do not need timely updates, and switch on Battery Saver when conserving charge matters more than immediate notifications or full performance. Exact controls and their effects vary by Android phone, manufacturer, and software version.
Which settings should you change first?
Start with the display, then review background use. These adjustments can reduce battery consumption, but no single setting guarantees a particular increase in runtime: results depend on the phone, signal, environment, and how you use it. Google’s Android battery guidance covers common display and power-saving controls.

- Lower brightness. Choose a comfortable level rather than leaving the display brighter than needed. Automatic or adaptive brightness can adjust the screen to its surroundings if you find that useful.
- Shorten screen timeout. Set the display to turn off sooner when the phone is idle, while leaving enough time for reading or other tasks.
- Try Dark theme if you prefer it. Google lists it as a battery-saving option, but the benefit is not uniform across display types and usage patterns.
- Keep adaptive app optimization on. It helps manage background use during ordinary use; check individual apps before imposing stronger restrictions.
- Use Battery Saver for short-term conservation. It is useful when you need to stretch the charge, with possible effects on notifications, syncing, and responsiveness.
Menu names differ. Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 13 and newer and recommends checking the phone maker’s instructions for exact paths.

On Pixel phones, Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Adaptive Battery learns from how you use apps and may limit background activity for apps you use less often. That can help reduce battery use, but it may also delay notifications or reduce performance. After initial setup or a factory reset, learning can take a few weeks to take full effect. Do not disable optimization globally as a battery-saving measure: Google warns that allowing an app to run more in the background can use more battery. If a particular app’s alerts must arrive promptly, check that app’s optimization or battery setting on your phone and weigh timeliness against background savings.
Find the apps using battery in the background
Before restricting apps, open your phone’s battery usage screen and look for apps with unusually high background use. The exact path varies, so search Settings for “battery” or consult the manufacturer’s support page. Restrict only apps that do not need to run or notify in the background. Messaging and calling, health tracking, security, navigation, and other time-sensitive apps may depend on background activity; restricting them can make updates or alerts late.
On Samsung Galaxy: use sleeping apps selectively
Galaxy phones offer controls for apps that should sleep or sleep deeply. Samsung says deep sleeping apps do not run in the background until you open them. It also provides a never-sleeping list for apps that should retain background operation. Look under Battery or Background usage limits if those controls are available on your model; names and availability vary by model, carrier, and software version. Use Battery Saver when the tradeoff is worthwhile
Android Battery Saver and manufacturer power-saving modes can limit background activity and other features to conserve the remaining charge. Depending on the phone and settings, apps may sync less often, notifications may arrive late, and visual effects or performance may be reduced. Turn it on when you are travelling, away from a charger, or trying to get through a long day—not necessarily as a default if immediate notifications and full responsiveness matter to you. Some Galaxy phones also provide a Light performance profile that prioritizes battery life over processing speed; it is device-specific, not a universal Android setting.

Reduce avoidable drain from connectivity and heavy use
Some battery use comes from what the phone is doing, not just a setting. When you need to make a low charge last, avoid leaving hotspot or tethering on when unused and consider limiting long periods of GPS navigation, video streaming, or graphics-heavy activity. Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical. Turn off location or Bluetooth only when you are not using features that depend on them; disabling them indiscriminately can disrupt apps and useful functions. Keep the phone cool and account for device differences
Heat can increase battery drain and damage the battery. Google Android Help warns that “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Google also says there is no need to cycle a phone from full to empty to teach it its capacity. See Google’s battery guidance.

There is no single universal sequence of Settings taps: options vary by manufacturer, model, carrier, and software version. Treat Pixel and Galaxy paths as examples for those phone families, and check the device maker’s support instructions when a control is missing or named differently.
