Cursor can help inspect a codebase, edit files, run commands, and check the results—but safe refactoring still depends on you defining the intended behavior and reviewing the changes. A practical workflow is to set the boundaries, write tests for the contract first, confirm they fail, then let Agent implement against them and run the checks again.
What Cursor Agent can—and cannot—do for a refactor
Cursor distinguishes Agent from autocomplete. Autocomplete suggests the next line or action as you type; Agent can work through a task by searching the codebase, reading and editing files, running shell commands, and checking results. Cursor also describes browser capabilities. The agent can help carry out a change, but it does not take responsibility for deciding whether the change is appropriate or correct. Cursor’s guidance is to set the goal and review the output. See Cursor’s coding-agent documentation.

That division of work matters most during a refactor. You supply the behavior that must remain true, the architectural boundaries, and the acceptance checks. The agent can help locate dependencies and propose or make changes. Your tests and code review determine whether the result meets the stated requirements; a passing test suite cannot prove that the requirements were complete or correct.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Give the project useful context before asking for changes
A refactor request is less ambiguous when the agent can see the conventions and constraints that shape the codebase. Cursor’s current documentation supports project rules in .cursor/rules, which can be scoped to a codebase and version-controlled, as well as the simpler AGENTS.md option. The older .cursorrules format is legacy. Check Cursor’s current Rules documentation for setup details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Useful project guidance is specific and actionable. For a Node.js service, it might identify the test command, the preferred module boundaries, how errors are represented, and which files or interfaces must not change. It should explain constraints, not merely tell the agent to “write clean code.”
Separate business logic from request handling
Consider an Express checkout route that validates a request, reads from a database, applies pricing rules, initiates payment, sends an email, and formats the response. Changing all of that in one handler makes the central business rule hard to test without also involving HTTP and persistence.

A useful refactoring direction is to move the pricing decision into a service function, while leaving the route responsible for coordinating the request and response and a repository or data-access layer responsible for persistence. The service can then be tested with ordinary inputs and outputs instead of requiring an HTTP request or a live database. This is an illustrative pattern, not a universal architecture: the right boundaries depend on the application, and the example does not establish a measured improvement in quality or speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a test-first loop to bound the agent’s work
- Write the contract. Describe the function’s inputs, outputs, business rules, and relevant edge cases in terms that can be checked. For pricing, that may include how discounts, invalid quantities, or missing data should behave—but only include cases that are actually requirements for your application.
- Ask for tests from that contract. Have Cursor draft tests for the stated behavior without implementing the function yet. Review the tests for missing cases and assumptions before relying on them.
- Run the tests against the current code. Confirm that the new tests fail because the implementation is absent or incomplete. If they pass immediately, investigate whether they are exercising the intended behavior or merely duplicating existing behavior.
- Ask Agent to implement against the tests. Keep the task bounded: identify the relevant function or files, state the architectural constraints, and instruct the agent not to alter the tests while implementing.
- Run the checks and review the diff. Inspect the implementation and tests, run the project’s relevant test and validation commands, and verify that unrelated behavior was not changed. Do not merge code you cannot explain or accept.
This sequence keeps the expected behavior in your hands and gives the agent a concrete target. It does not guarantee correctness: an incomplete contract can produce incomplete tests, and a test suite can faithfully encode a mistaken expectation.

Use checkpoints for recovery and Git for durable history
For exploratory or substantial changes, Cursor checkpoints can provide snapshots that you can restore if the agent goes in the wrong direction. Cursor says checkpoints are stored separately from Git and recommends Git for permanent version control. Treat a checkpoint as a convenient recovery aid, not as a replacement for commits, branches, or your normal review process. Details are in Cursor’s checkpoint documentation.
Choose local or cloud agent work with data handling in mind
Cursor says agents may run locally or be handed off to the cloud. The choice affects where work runs and what handling terms apply, so consider the project’s confidentiality requirements before using AI features. Cursor’s privacy documentation says prompts and code context are sent to model providers when AI features are used. It says that with Privacy Mode enabled, code is not used for training by Cursor or providers; that is a training-use statement, not a promise that code never leaves your machine. The page also notes nuances for personal API keys and models outside zero-data-retention agreements. Teams and Enterprise have documented default or enforced availability conditions. Review Cursor’s privacy and data information and your organization’s policies before sending sensitive code.

What this workflow can establish
A disciplined agent-assisted refactor can make a change easier to inspect: the contract is explicit, the tests expose the expected behavior, and the implementation can be reviewed against both. Neither Cursor’s product documentation nor the tutorial establishes an independent measured effect on developer productivity, defect rates, or long-term code quality. Cursor itself notes that output quality depends on the model, the harness, and the context provided. The practical standard is therefore not whether the agent produced code, but whether the code satisfies requirements you have checked and can maintain.
