For a drone to image a scene with no visible light, it needs more than an ordinary camera. Thermal imaging detects heat patterns; near-infrared (NIR) night capture uses an infrared illuminator and a camera sensitive to that light. Among the models covered here, the DJI Matrice 4T is the clearest match for a combination of thermal imaging, visible cameras and an NIR auxiliary light. The DJI Mavic 3T is a folding alternative with integrated thermal imaging.

Thermal imaging finds heat patterns
A thermal camera detects infrared energy emitted by objects and displays differences in apparent temperature. It can help locate a person, animal, hotspot or heat loss, but its output is not ordinary color footage. Thermal imagery alone does not establish facial detail or recognizable visible-light imagery. DJI describes the Matrice 4T as having a thermal imaging camera; its product information also lists a thermal High-Res Mode up to 1280 × 1024. NIR-assisted imaging records a scene illuminated outside ordinary human vision
An NIR illuminator supplies infrared light that people generally do not see, while a suitable camera records the illuminated scene. This is different from thermal imaging: the camera is capturing reflected illumination rather than simply mapping heat. The Matrice 4T includes an NIR auxiliary light, but confirm the current model specifications and whether its illumination range suits your search area before buying. DJI Matrice 4 Series.

An ordinary visible-light camera cannot be assumed to show useful detail in absolute darkness without illumination. Decide first whether you need to locate a heat source, record visible detail, or use both kinds of imagery together.

DJI’s Matrice 4T support information lists three 48 MP visible cameras alongside the thermal camera and NIR light. These specifications describe the Matrice 4T; do not transfer them to the Matrice 4E. DJI Matrice 4 Series. The Matrice 4T is the strongest documented match here for a buyer who wants thermal imaging plus an NIR light and multiple visible cameras. That is a feature-based fit, not a claim that it outperforms the Mavic 3T in every situation: no controlled head-to-head results are established for these models.

Other aircraft to investigate with official specifications in hand
A specialist buying guide also discusses the DJI Matrice 30T and Matrice 350 RTK. It reports a 640 × 512 thermal camera for the M30T and describes the M350 RTK as a platform that accepts a separate camera payload. Treat these as leads to verify, not primary-source-confirmed recommendations: check the current manufacturer specifications, compatible payloads, and availability for the exact configuration. How to choose for your job
- Define the target. For locating people, animals, hot equipment or heat loss, assess the thermal camera. For recognizable visible imagery, check low-light camera performance and whether the drone has an NIR illuminator. If both matter, verify that the aircraft provides both systems and that their feeds meet your workflow.
- Compare the thermal specifications that affect detection. Check resolution, lens field of view, refresh rate, temperature-measurement functions and export options in the current technical sheet for the exact model. Resolution alone does not establish detection range, identification detail or performance in your conditions.
- Check illumination and visible-camera needs separately. Confirm the NIR light’s useful distance for the area you need to search and the low-light performance of the camera paired with it. A thermal resolution figure cannot tell you how much visible detail an NIR-assisted camera will record.
- Choose integrated imaging or a payload platform. An aircraft with built-in thermal equipment can simplify setup. A platform with swappable payloads may offer flexibility, but confirm which camera is included, which payloads are compatible and whether they are sold separately.
- Evaluate the whole operation. Compare weather limits, flight time with the actual payload and in expected temperatures, obstacle sensing, controller and software requirements, training, and whether night operation is lawful where you will fly.
- Confirm the purchase details before committing. Verify current price, included controller and batteries, service and training needs, seller authorization, regional compatibility and warranty terms. The cited sources do not establish current prices, Amazon stock or seller status.
Can a thermal drone identify a person?
Thermal imagery can help reveal a warm subject against cooler surroundings, but that does not make it equivalent to a visible-light recording. A thermal feed shows apparent temperature patterns; it does not inherently provide natural color or facial detail. If the task requires recognizable visible imagery, evaluate a low-light camera and NIR illumination separately rather than treating thermal resolution as a substitute.

Camera capability does not grant permission to fly after dark. In the United States, FAA Part 107 guidance allows certificated remote pilots to fly at night when applicable requirements are met. FAA guidance says the drone must have anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles; controlled-airspace authorization may also be required. The applicable rules depend on the operation and location, and requirements outside the U.S. are set by the relevant national aviation authority.
