When a floating interest rate rises, ask your lender for the revised EMI, remaining term and total repayment under each available option before choosing. You may be able to increase the EMI, extend the tenure, combine the two, switch to a fixed rate if offered, or make a part-prepayment. The best choice depends on your loan agreement, cash flow and the cost of each option. This guide covers India; RBI’s reset rules apply to specified floating-rate equated-instalment personal loans, while its home-loan material is separate borrower guidance.
First, find out what changed at the reset
A floating rate can move when its benchmark or index changes, subject to the reset terms in your agreement. A higher rate can raise the EMI, extend the repayment period, or lead to a combination of both. A fixed rate may apply for the entire term or only part of it, so check the agreement rather than assuming how your rate works.

Start with the lender’s reset notice and latest account statement. For loans covered by the RBI reset direction, the lender must communicate an increase in EMI or tenure arising from the external benchmark. Covered borrowers must also have access to quarterly statements showing principal and interest recovered, EMI, remaining instalments and the annualized rate or APR. If the effect is unclear, request an updated amortization schedule, which shows how each payment is split between principal and interest and how the balance changes over time. Compare the ways to manage the higher payment
For covered floating-rate equated-instalment personal loans, RBI’s direction provides for an increase in EMI, an extension of tenure, or a combination. It also provides for part or full prepayment during the residual term, subject to applicable instructions on charges. Ask your lender which choices apply to your specific loan and get comparable written calculations before deciding. | Option | Potential effect on monthly cash flow | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Raise the EMI | Higher monthly outflow; compared with leaving the EMI unchanged, it can limit how long the higher rate accrues, depending on the lender’s recalculation and your agreement. | Revised schedule, remaining term and total repayment. |
| Extend the tenure | Can reduce the monthly EMI burden. | Extended term, total interest and repayment, plus any age or product limits. RBI says a floating-rate tenure extension must not result in negative amortisation. |
| Combine a smaller EMI increase with a tenure extension | Balances a higher monthly payment against a longer repayment period. | Ask the lender to show the EMI, remaining term and total repayment alongside the other choices. |
| Switch to a fixed rate, if offered | May make payments more predictable for the fixed-rate period. | Availability, fixed-rate period, any reset clause, permitted switches, conversion or service charges, APR and total payment. |
| Make a part-prepayment or repay in full | Reduces the principal if the lender applies the payment to the loan; the effect on EMI or term depends on the lender’s terms. | Dated payoff figures, charge details, how the payment is applied and the cash reserves left afterward. |
Choose the EMI or tenure adjustment that fits your budget
Raise the EMI
A higher EMI increases what you must pay each month. Depending on the rate, balance, agreement and recalculation, it can reduce the time over which interest accrues compared with keeping the EMI unchanged. Ask for the revised amortization schedule and total remaining repayment; without your loan figures and applicable charges, a specific saving cannot be calculated.

Extend the tenure
A longer term can lower the monthly payment, but usually means paying interest for longer and can make the loan more expensive overall. Compare the revised EMI with the total interest and repayment on the updated schedule. RBI’s direction also bars tenure elongation on a covered floating-rate loan if it would cause negative amortisation—where the scheduled payment does not cover the interest due and the balance grows. Use a combination
If neither a sharply higher EMI nor a much longer term works for you, ask the lender to calculate a combination of a smaller EMI increase and a tenure extension. Compare it directly with the all-higher-EMI and all-extension cases using the same balance and date.
Check whether a fixed-rate switch is actually available
Under the RBI Master Direction as amended on September 29, 2025, effective October 1, 2025, a lender may provide a fixed-rate switch at reset under its board-approved policy. It is not a guaranteed borrower entitlement under the current wording. The RBI FAQ dated January 10, 2025 predates that amendment, so its earlier statement that lenders must offer a fixed product does not describe the later rule. - Comprehensive Amortization Schedule: View detailed breakdowns of each payment, including principal, interest, and remaining balance.
- Custom Loan Parameters: Easily input loan amount, interest rate, term length, and payment frequency for tailored results.
- Extra Payment Functionality: Add extra payments to see how they impact loan duration and reduce overall interest.
- Payment Frequency Options: Choose from monthly, bi-weekly, or yearly payment schedules to fit your repayment plan.
- Summary Overview: Quickly see total payments, total interest paid, and total loan costs at a glance.
If your lender offers the switch, ask about the fixed-rate period, any subsequent reset clause, how many switches are allowed, all conversion and service charges, and the APR and total repayment. A fixed rate can help with payment planning, but it will not automatically benefit from later market-rate declines.
Consider prepayment or a home-loan balance transfer
Part-prepay or repay the loan
Before using savings to reduce the principal, request a dated payoff statement and written details of any applicable charges. Keep enough emergency liquidity for your needs. Whether prepayment is preferable to keeping or using the money elsewhere depends on your rate, remaining term, charges and cash requirements; there is no universal saving amount.

Compare a home-loan balance transfer
RBI’s home-loan guidance describes switching to another lender when a lower rate is available and notes that prepayment or switchover charges may apply. Compare the new lender’s APR and fees, legal or administrative costs, payoff amount, remaining term and total repayment with your current lender’s written offer. A lower advertised rate alone does not prove that switching will cost less overall. RBI home-loan FAQs
Make an apples-to-apples comparison

- EMI due now and whether it fits your monthly budget.
- Remaining repayment term.
- Total interest and total repayment from today.
- APR, benchmark or index, spread and future reset conditions.
- Conversion, prepayment, transfer and administration charges.
- Flexibility and emergency cash remaining after any lump-sum payment.
Do not choose solely because one option produces the lowest immediate EMI. A smaller payment can come with a longer term and higher total interest; a transfer or switch can add fees. Use the lender’s updated schedules and written charges to weigh monthly affordability against total cost.
