Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYes, but “running in a browser” can describe three different things. The game’s code may execute on your device, with WebAssembly handling some or much of it. An emulator in the page may be imitating an older machine. Or the game may not run on your device at all: a cloud server or your own gaming PC runs it and sends video and audio to the browser. A demanding, existing Windows game almost always reaches a browser by the last route.
The three approaches compared
| Approach | Where the game executes | What has to be true | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser-native game or web port | Locally, in the browser | The title was built or ported for the web and fits browser APIs, device capabilities and resource limits | No remote stream needed, but arbitrary desktop games do not become compatible just because the browser supports WebAssembly |
| Browser emulation | Locally, inside an emulator running in the browser | An emulator exists for the target platform and supports the title and its peripherals | Practical for older software; compatibility, performance and save handling vary by implementation |
| Cloud gaming | The provider’s remote computer | The provider offers the game, and your account, region, browser/device and network are supported | The client only receives a stream; a subscription or game ownership may be required, and network quality affects play |
| Home-PC remote play | Your own gaming PC | The host PC is on and reachable, and the client app, device and network work | Reuses your PC and library, but that PC still renders and encodes the game |
WebAssembly: local execution, but not magic
WebAssembly is a binary format designed for efficient execution across operating systems and processor architectures, on the web and off it. The WebAssembly.org use-case page lists games, including games with heavy assets, and platform simulation/emulation among its intended uses. So a full game can run locally in a browser when its developers target that environment.

What WebAssembly does not do is supply Windows APIs, game assets, a matching graphics pipeline or a complete PC operating system. A web port is still a port: the code must be built or adapted for the browser, and it has to work within the browser’s APIs and your device’s graphics, memory, storage and input. WebAssembly’s portability documentation also notes that an environment may emulate behavior its hardware or operating system lacks, and that this can perform poorly. No universal speed ratio against native code is established, so be wary of anyone quoting one.
The accurate phrasing is “some full games can run locally in a browser”, not “PC games run in a browser”.

Emulation: imitating another platform
An emulator imitates a target platform so software written for it can run elsewhere. The WebAssembly use-case page names DOSBox, QEMU and MAME as examples of this category.
A concrete example: js-dos
The js-dos project’s DOSBox README describes DOSBox as an emulator for older DOS games and programs, and explains an Emscripten build that runs in a browser. Its instructions show how DOS program files are packaged alongside that build so they can be served as a web page.

Caveats
- Saves may vanish. That README states the default Emscripten filesystem is in memory, so saves are lost when the page closes. This is specific to the project’s default setup, not a rule for every web emulator.
- You need suitable files. The emulator is not the game. You need game files you are entitled to use, and emulation does not guarantee that every old title works.
- It targets older platforms. Emulation suits software from machines like DOS-era PCs, not modern demanding Windows titles.
Streaming: the game runs somewhere else
This is the route that makes a modern, graphically heavy game appear in a browser tab. Nothing about the game’s code runs on your device; the browser decodes and displays video and sends your input back. There are two kinds.

- Games must be opted in and checked for availability, so not every title in your library will appear.
- The service may require a subscription, and availability can vary by region.
- Each cloud session may use a new virtual PC. Games should use Steam Cloud or another online save system, or progress can be lost.
Because the service is in beta, check current title support, region and account requirements before relying on it.
Remote play from your own PC
Steam Remote Play, using Steam Link, lets you play on a phone, tablet, TV or another PC. Valve’s page puts it plainly: “When you play a game using Remote Play, video and audio are sent from your gaming PC to another device.” Input travels back to the gaming PC. The game never runs on the client, so the host PC must be on and reachable, and it still does the rendering work.

Why “works in any browser” is unreliable
Streaming services publish narrow compatibility lists. Amazon’s GameLift Streams page for compatible devices and browsers is a good illustration. It lists minimum operating-system versions, supported browser versions and input support separately for Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile and TV devices. One desktop entry, for example, pairs Windows 11 24H2 or later with Chrome 133+ or Edge 133+. Other platform and browser combinations have different thresholds.
- Controllers: Xbox controllers are documented in a number of configurations, but some controller features are missing or partial in certain browsers.
- Touch: virtual touch input is offered on listed mobile setups.
- In-app browsers: on iOS these can disable WebRTC, which real-time interactive streaming needs.
- Network: AWS recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
These are requirements for that one service and change over time. Don’t assume they apply to other cloud gaming services, and recheck the live page. No sourced bandwidth or latency figure applies across services.
How to tell which one you are looking at
- Look at the claim. Phrases like “stream”, “cloud”, “Remote Play” or “Link” mean remote execution. A download-free page for a small or retro title is more likely a web build or an emulator.
- Check requirements. A subscription, a game-library link or a host PC that must be left running points to streaming.
- Think about connection loss. A streamed game depends on the network path and the service’s infrastructure, while a local web build or emulator can in principle keep working without a game stream.
Choosing a route
| Your situation | Likely route |
|---|---|
| You want a classic DOS-era game | Browser emulation, with attention to where saves go |
| You want a small or casual game with no install | A game built or ported for the web |
| You want a modern Windows game on a weak device | Cloud gaming, if the title is offered and your account, region and browser qualify |
| You already own a capable gaming PC | Remote play from that PC to your other device |
When comparing options, weigh where saves live, which input devices the service supports, whether you need a subscription or must own the game, and whether your host PC has to stay on. Controllers are optional, but verify support for your specific service, browser, OS and device before buying one.
