To quiet a window air conditioner without hurting cooling, first distinguish a loose rattle or vibration from normal airflow and operating sounds. If the unit is vibrating, check that it is level and firmly supported; then follow its own manual for clearances and drainage. Seal gaps around the window installation if needed, but never cover the cabinet’s louvers or other air openings.
Is the sound a rattle—or normal operation?
A steady sound does not necessarily mean the air conditioner is loose or damaged. Frigidaire says normal operation may include fan airflow, refrigerant gurgling or hissing, compressor chatter, and water droplets hitting the condenser. Sound alone cannot establish that a component has failed.

A new or pronounced rattle, or vibration that seems to come from the cabinet, window, or support, is a reason to inspect how the unit is installed. Do not put your hands or objects through the fan openings while the unit is running.

Check the mounting and support first
LG identifies uneven installation or a loosely secured angle as possible causes of noise as the motor or compressor rotates. Its troubleshooting guidance says the stand should be strong enough and secured well enough to prevent vibration.

- Switch the unit off before inspecting it. Look for visible looseness at the window, mounting points, and support; do not reach into moving parts.
- Check whether the installation is even and secure. Follow the air conditioner’s installation manual for its required position and mounting method. Do not improvise a change in tilt.
- Check the support against the manual and window. A bracket or stand is worth considering only if the existing support is inadequate or insecure. Confirm compatibility, load requirements, and permitted mounting points for your model and window before adding one.
- Stop if the unit is not safely supported. If you cannot secure it safely, or vibration remains after correcting installation issues, contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer or service provider.
A window or wall may transmit vibration, but the available manufacturer guidance particularly supports checking secure, even installation first. Do not remove braces or other parts that support the unit in an attempt to isolate sound.
Keep the airflow openings and required clearances open
Cabinet louvers are not installation gaps: do not cover or block the side or top louvers, and keep the condenser’s airflow path unobstructed. Check the manual for the exact clearances required by your model.

For example, an LG manual covering specified models calls for at least 20 inches of clearance behind the cabinet and says to keep the side and top louvers unobstructed. That 20-inch dimension is model-specific, not a universal rule for window air conditioners.

Reduce noise from a dirty filter
LG notes that dust on the filter may make noise louder, and a dirty filter may also reduce cooling. Check the user manual for how to remove, clean, and reinstall your filter; make sure it is seated correctly before running the unit.

Seal the window gap—not the vents
Insulation can close gaps at the window interface, helping reduce drafts, but it must stay clear of the unit’s louvers and airflow openings. LG advises securing the unit and sealing gaps near the wall or unit with the supplied insulation. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America fact sheet discusses rigid foam panels and backer rod for air leakage and cautions against removing retaining braces when fitting foam panels.
Fit insulation to the gap between the window and installation, not over the cabinet’s ventilation openings. Choose material that suits the actual gap, and preserve the unit’s supports and braces. If the correct fit or clearance is unclear, check the manual or ask a qualified installer.

Do not alter drainage to silence normal sounds
Frigidaire warns against drilling the base pan to stop water sounds because doing so may void the warranty. Check your own model’s manual before changing its drainage arrangement, tilt, mounting, or support. Water pinging or gurgling may be a normal operating sound, so do not modify the unit based on sound alone.
