To reduce mobile data used while a VPN is on, first find which apps are consuming data, limit unnecessary background activity, and use Wi-Fi for large transfers. You can also test a different VPN protocol or exclude selected apps with split tunneling—but excluded traffic no longer gets VPN protection. There is no verified universal percentage for how much data a VPN adds, so check your own phone’s usage before and after each change.
Why a VPN can use more mobile data
A VPN carries your app traffic through an encrypted connection and adds protocol overhead. That can increase cellular data use, but the amount depends on the VPN, device, apps, and how you use them. Google Pixel Phone Help notes that a VPN may increase mobile data costs, along with possible effects on speed, latency, and battery life: Google Pixel Phone Help. The page does not give a universal percentage, and the available sources do not establish one.

It helps to distinguish two goals: reducing the data apps generate, and reducing how much of that traffic passes through the VPN. Restricting background sync can address the first; split tunneling addresses the second, with a privacy trade-off.
Find what is using cellular data
Start with your phone’s mobile-data usage screen and review per-app totals for the current billing period. Look for apps with unexpectedly high use, including cloud backups, photo syncing, app updates, or media downloads. These are possibilities to investigate, not causes that apply to every phone.

Check whether the large total comes from foreground activity, such as streaming, or background transfers while you are not using the app. Addressing an app’s unnecessary activity is often more useful than changing VPN settings alone.
Limit unnecessary background transfers
Restrict apps that do not need to sync over cellular, or enable your device’s data-saving mode. Android Data Saver can prevent some apps from sending or receiving background data, while allowing exceptions for selected apps. The exact controls and menu path vary by Android version and manufacturer; AT&T’s guide describes the feature, but its instructions may not match every device: AT&T: Use Data Saver.

- Allow background mobile data only for apps that need it, such as messaging or time-sensitive work tools.
- Use your phone’s data-saving mode if you want a broader limit, then add exceptions where necessary.
Test your VPN protocol setting
If your VPN app offers protocol choices, you can test WireGuard or its automatic protocol-selection option. CyberGhost recommends WireGuard in its Android guidance and claims it can use less data, but that is a provider recommendation—not a universal, independently established saving. Proton documents multiple protocol choices and Smart Protocol in supported apps: CyberGhost: How to reduce mobile data usage on Android and Proton VPN: Change VPN protocols.
Change one setting at a time and compare usage while doing similar tasks. A different protocol may behave differently on your device or network; the cited guidance does not establish a protocol-by-protocol savings ranking.

Use split tunneling only when the privacy trade-off is acceptable
Split tunneling lets you choose apps whose traffic bypasses the VPN. That can reduce the amount of traffic routed through the tunnel, but excluded apps no longer receive protection from that VPN. Do not exclude an app merely to lower a data figure if you rely on the VPN to protect its traffic.
Availability and controls depend on the VPN and device. Google documents app exclusions for VPN by Google on Pixel devices; those instructions should not be assumed to apply to other phones or VPN apps: Google Pixel Phone Help. CyberGhost also discusses split tunneling in its Android guidance: CyberGhost: How to reduce mobile data usage on Android.

Move large transfers to Wi-Fi
When practical, use Wi-Fi for large downloads, app updates, backups, and media transfers. Close or restrict idle apps that do not need to sync. These steps target the underlying traffic, whether or not it is routed through a VPN.
Turning off the VPN when you do not need it is another option, but it is a privacy decision, not a data-saving setting with a guaranteed result: while disconnected, your traffic is no longer protected by that VPN. CyberGhost recommends Wi-Fi for data-heavy activity and closing idle apps in its guidance: CyberGhost: How to reduce mobile data usage on Android.

Measure whether a change helped
- Record each app’s cellular usage for a defined period, or note the phone’s cellular-data total before a test.
- Make one change, such as restricting a background app or changing the VPN protocol.
- Repeat similar activity for a comparable period, with the VPN and cellular connection in the same state.
- Compare the totals. If usage patterns differed substantially, the comparison cannot isolate the effect of the setting.
Phone counters, VPN features, carrier plans, and menu labels vary. There is no established standard saving to expect from these steps; your own device’s measurements are the useful check.
