The most dependable way to reduce tyre wear and the particles it creates is to reduce unnecessary tyre force: accelerate progressively, anticipate traffic so you can brake gently, take corners without scrubbing the tyres, and keep every tyre at the vehicle manufacturer’s specified cold pressure. Do not inflate tyres above that specification to chase a lower emissions figure. Under-inflation can wear the shoulders; over-inflation can wear the centre, and the available emissions evidence on pressure is still limited.
Tyre particles are only one part of non-exhaust road pollution. Driving technique and maintenance can reduce avoidable abrasion from your own vehicle, but there is no established universal percentage saving for a particular habit. The practical objective is consistent, smooth control, correct pressure, prompt investigation of uneven wear and a replacement tyre chosen for safety as well as documented abrasion performance.

What tyre particle pollution is—and what it is not
Tyre abrasion occurs when the tyre’s tread and compound experience friction against the road. Turning, accelerating and braking all create the forces that produce abrasion. The released material can include rubber and road-derived particles, which are carried away by wind and water or deposited beside the road.

They include tyre wear, brake wear and road-surface abrasion, rather than exhaust gases from the engine or tailpipe. This distinction matters when reading statistics: a non-exhaust percentage is not automatically a tyre-only percentage.

| Statistic | What it measures | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 77% of PM10 and 60% of PM2.5 | Share of EU-27 road-transport emissions attributed to non-exhaust sources | European Environment Agency inventory for 2023; includes brake wear, tyre wear and road abrasion, not tyres alone |
| 110 mg/km per passenger vehicle | Mean passenger-car tyre abrasion | European Commission Joint Research Centre review published in 2023; based on approximately 300 measurements and not a prediction for every vehicle or tyre |
| 68 mg/km per tonne | Mean abrasion normalized by vehicle load | Same JRC review; the result varies with tyre, vehicle, road, environment and driving style |
| One-third to one-half | Estimated contribution of tyre abrasion to unintentionally released environmental microplastics | Range reported in the JRC literature review; its scope differs from the EEA road-transport inventory |
| 5–30% | Estimated contribution of tyre abrasion to road-transport particulate-matter emissions | JRC literature-review range; do not combine it directly with the EEA percentages |
These figures describe populations, inventories or literature ranges. They cannot tell you exactly how many milligrams your car emits on a particular trip. Your vehicle mass, tyre construction and size, load, road texture, weather, pressure and driving style all change the result.
Driving habits that limit unnecessary abrasion
Accelerate progressively
Apply the accelerator smoothly rather than asking the tyres for a sudden burst of longitudinal force. A gradual throttle application helps the tread remain in stable contact with the road and avoids wheel slip. It is especially useful when pulling away on wet, dusty or loose surfaces, where available grip is lower.
Look well ahead and create space before you need to move off. If a traffic light is about to change or a queue is visible, there is little benefit in accelerating hard only to lift off a few seconds later. The objective is not to drive unusually slowly; it is to avoid repeated, unnecessary high-force events.
Leave room to brake gently
Scan beyond the vehicle immediately ahead and lift off the accelerator early when traffic is slowing. Progressive braking generally creates less abrupt tyre force than a late, heavy stop. It also reduces the chance of an emergency manoeuvre that combines hard braking with steering.
A real-world driving study identified braking and acceleration events as the leading influences among the behaviours it examined, followed by cornering and speed. The study abstract does not provide a universal percentage reduction, so no fixed saving should be promised for a particular braking technique.
Take corners without scrubbing the tread
Approach a bend at a suitable speed, make steering inputs smoothly and avoid turning more sharply than the road requires. A high-speed turn or a rapid steering correction asks the tread to generate lateral force while it is already carrying the vehicle’s load. That interaction can increase slip and scrub.

On a roundabout, for example, reduce speed before entering, hold a steady line and avoid accelerating hard while adding steering lock. The same principle applies when manoeuvring in car parks: slow down before a tight turn rather than forcing the tyres to pivot under heavy throttle.
Moderate speed where conditions demand it
Speed was one of the factors associated with tyre-related behaviour in the real-world study, although the available abstract does not establish a single speed threshold or a quantified emissions curve. Higher speed can also magnify the consequences of a pothole, standing water or a sudden lane change. Choose a speed that leaves time for a smooth response and matches the road, weather, visibility and legal limit.
Anticipate surface and weather changes
Wet roads, gravel, dusty junctions, rough surfaces and damaged pavement can change grip and increase slip. Ease the controls before entering those areas. Avoid spinning a driven wheel to climb a kerb or leave a soft shoulder; if a manoeuvre requires unusually high throttle, pause and choose a safer line.
Tyre pressure: use the vehicle specification, not a guessed “eco” setting
Find the correct number
Use the pressure listed by the vehicle manufacturer, normally on the driver’s door or door pillar placard, inside the fuel or charging flap, or in the handbook. There may be separate values for normal and heavily loaded use, and sometimes separate front and rear values. Follow the label for your actual load and wheel or tyre configuration.
The specified value is a cold-tyre pressure. A tyre warmed by driving reads higher because the air inside has expanded. Comparing a hot reading with a cold specification can lead to an incorrect adjustment.

Check and adjust pressure safely
- Park for long enough for the tyres to cool, ideally before driving or after several hours stationary.
- Remove the valve cap and measure each tyre with a reliable gauge, including the spare if the vehicle has one.
- Compare every reading with the manufacturer’s relevant placard or handbook value for the current load.
- Add or release air to reach the specified value, then recheck the reading.
- Refit valve caps and inspect for a slow leak if one tyre repeatedly loses pressure.
A pressure gauge is only a measuring tool; buying one does not itself reduce pollution. The benefit comes from checking cold pressure correctly and adjusting it to the vehicle specification.

Why both under- and over-inflation are problems
Too little pressure allows greater sidewall and tread deflection and can concentrate wear toward the shoulders or edges. It can also alter handling and increase the risk of heat build-up. Too much pressure can reduce the contact patch and concentrate wear in the centre of the tread, while making the ride harsher and reducing grip on some surfaces. Neither condition is a sound emissions strategy.
Pressure is only one variable. Load, tyre design, vehicle geometry, road texture, temperature and driving style also affect abrasion. The available evidence does not support choosing a pressure higher than the maker’s recommendation as a general method for reducing particle emissions.
What the limited pressure experiment shows
A UK Department for Transport Phase 2 test using one tyre type on a smooth roller found that reducing pressure from 2.9 to 2.0 bar increased particle-number and particle-mass emissions. The report called for additional testing with different tyres and an abrasive test surface. Because the experiment used a single tyre type and a laboratory roller, it should not be turned into a universal pressure-response curve for every car or road. It reinforces the need to use the specified pressure rather than extrapolating from one test.

Look for uneven patterns
Check the tread and sidewalls periodically, and whenever the steering feels different, the vehicle pulls to one side or a vibration appears. Wear concentrated on both shoulders, in the centre, or on one side can indicate a pressure, alignment, suspension or other issue. Cupping, feathering, cracks, bulges or exposed structural material require prompt professional attention.
The available evidence establishes that pressure and alignment can affect wear, but a tread pattern alone cannot reliably identify the failed component. Do not attempt to diagnose suspension or alignment solely by eye if the pattern is severe or recurring.
When to stop driving and seek help
- Arrange an inspection promptly for a bulge, cut that reaches structural layers, exposed cords, a rapidly losing tyre or a warning light that remains on.
- Ask a qualified tyre or vehicle technician to check alignment, suspension and wheel balance when wear returns after pressure correction.
- Replace tyres according to the legal tread requirement and the manufacturer’s guidance, and replace them sooner if damage, ageing or irregular wear compromises safety.
Correcting the underlying fault prevents a new tyre from being abraded in the same way. It also avoids treating a maintenance problem as a driving-style problem.

Choosing replacement tyres without falling for an abrasion shortcut
Compare like with like
Do not assume that an “EV”, “eco” or lower-rolling-resistance label proves lower tyre abrasion. Those descriptions can relate to efficiency, vehicle fitment or marketing criteria rather than a standardized wear result. Compare documented abrasion measurements only when the tyre size, load and speed rating, vehicle fitment and test method are comparable.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Was abrasion measured with a standardized method? | Different road surfaces, drums and reporting methods can produce results that are not directly comparable. |
| Is the tyre size and load rating the same as your vehicle requires? | A result from another size or construction may not represent your fitment. |
| Does it meet the vehicle’s safety and compatibility requirements? | Load capacity, speed rating, wheel approval and electronic-systems compatibility remain essential. |
| Is it suitable for your climate and roads? | Wet grip, snow or ice performance, heat tolerance and puncture resistance can matter more than an unverified abrasion claim. |
| Is the result documented rather than inferred from a label? | No specific tyre model is established here as a low-abrasion recommendation. |
Lower particle release is not useful if a tyre has unsuitable wet grip, weather performance or load capacity. Select a compliant, safe tyre first, then use comparable abrasion data when it is available.

UNECE’s harmonized measurement approach
On 8 February 2024, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe announced adoption of a harmonized tyre-abrasion measurement approach. It includes road-convoy tests covering 8,000 km and laboratory drum tests covering 5,000 km. Results are expressed as tyre weight loss in milligrams per kilometre per tonne of load.
The long test distances reflect the difficulty of comparing wear fairly. Tyre compound, construction, vehicle mass, road surface, temperature, weather and driving behaviour can all change the measured loss. A standardized procedure is therefore more informative than a marketing term or a short informal comparison.
Proposed limits for passenger-car tyres
In March 2026, UNECE announced proposed abrasion limits for new C1 passenger-car tyres. The announcement described tyres sold from 30 June 2028 as the intended application date, submission to the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) in June 2026, and entry into force in January 2027 for Contracting Parties if the proposal is adopted. These are proposed and conditional milestones, not a guarantee that every date or provision will take effect unchanged.

A practical low-abrasion driving and maintenance routine
Before a trip
- Confirm cold pressures against the vehicle placard or handbook, including any load-specific setting.
- Walk around the vehicle and look for obvious damage, embedded objects, bulges or a visibly low tyre.
- Adjust luggage and cargo so the vehicle is not carrying unnecessary weight and remains within its rated load.
During the trip
- Build speed progressively instead of spinning the driven tyres.
- Look through traffic and lift off early so braking can remain smooth.
- Reduce speed before bends and make steady steering inputs.
- Leave extra space on wet, loose, rough or damaged surfaces.
- Avoid repeated acceleration followed by immediate braking when traffic conditions are visible ahead.
Afterward and at service intervals
- Inspect tread wear and sidewalls at regular intervals and after striking a pothole or kerb.
- Have recurring uneven wear investigated by a qualified service professional.
- After fitting replacement tyres, confirm the correct size, load and speed ratings, pressure settings and wheel alignment.
- Keep records of pressure checks and service work so a gradual leak or recurring wear pattern is easier to identify.
Common mistakes that increase wear or confuse the evidence
Overinflating to chase an emissions claim
There is no general evidence here that exceeding the manufacturer’s pressure reduces tyre particles in real-world driving. It can create centre wear and compromise handling. Use the specified pressure, not a guessed higher value.
Confusing tyre-only numbers with non-exhaust totals
The EEA’s 2023 figures describe all non-exhaust road-transport sources. The JRC’s abrasion estimates and literature ranges describe tyre-related quantities with different denominators and scopes. They should be reported separately, not blended into one headline percentage.
Treating a label as a measured result
“Eco,” “EV” and similar labels do not establish abrasion performance by themselves. Ask whether a documented test used a comparable size, load and standardized method, while retaining the requirements for grip, weather suitability and compatibility.

Expecting a guaranteed saving from one habit
Driving smoothly is a sensible way to avoid unnecessary force, but no source cited here establishes a universal percentage reduction for smoother acceleration, braking or cornering. Real-world outcomes depend on the route, traffic, vehicle, tyres and road.
What to do first
Start with the controls that cost nothing: anticipate traffic, accelerate and brake progressively, and take corners without unnecessary scrub. Then make cold-pressure checks against the vehicle maker’s numbers part of routine maintenance. Investigate uneven wear instead of repeatedly replacing tyres, and compare replacement products only on genuinely comparable abrasion measurements while preserving safety and legal compatibility. This combination addresses the causes a driver can influence without overstating what current testing can prove.
