How to Reduce Tracking in Your Phone’s Privacy Settings

Review app tracking, location, and sensitive-data permissions separately to limit access without disabling more phone features than necessary.

To reduce tracking, review app tracking permission, location access, and sensitive-data permissions separately: they control different things. On iPhone, start at Settings > Privacy & Security; on Android, check each app’s permissions or open the Permission manager. Give each app only the access it needs, and choose limited location access when it still lets the app work. These settings can limit particular forms of access or ad personalization, but they do not switch off every kind of data collection.

What phone privacy settings can—and cannot—control

“Tracking” can mean several different things in a phone’s settings. Cross-app tracking controls whether an app can link activity across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising, measurement, or sharing information with data brokers. Location permission governs whether an app can access the device’s location. Permissions for contacts, photos, the microphone, and other data govern access to those categories.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These are separate controls. Turning off an app’s tracking permission does not automatically revoke its location or photo access. Denying location does not change the app’s access to contacts. And a device permission does not, by itself, alter information you have shared with a separate account or stop a company’s independent collection practices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the narrowest access that still supports the feature you want. If an app no longer works as expected, you can review its permission and decide whether to restore only the access that feature needs. A useful way to approach the settings is to identify what you want to limit first: cross-company advertising tracking, access to a particular type of device data, or an advertising identifier. Then change the control that addresses that specific activity rather than expecting one switch to cover everything.

At a glance: iPhone and Android controls

Control iPhone Android
Where to review permissions Settings > Privacy & Security, then choose a category such as Tracking or Location Services; app permissions can also be reviewed by category. Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions, or Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Labels and paths vary by Android release and manufacturer.
Limit location access Review apps under Location Services. Choose While Using the App or an available one-time option when appropriate. Google’s documented options include All the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. Availability can depend on Android version.
Approximate location Turn off Precise Location when approximate location is enough. The documented permission options do not establish an approximate-location setting; check the controls available on your device.
What the control addresses Tracking addresses cross-company app and website tracking. Location and other privacy categories control access to those specific types of data. App permissions control access to categories such as location. Advertising ID controls address the identifier and ad personalization, not every form of collection.
What may be affected An app may lose a feature that needs the denied permission. Apple warns that turning off Location Services can stop important features from working. An app may lose a function that depends on the denied permission. The effect depends on the app and the access it needs.

The platforms provide related but not identical controls. iPhone’s Tracking setting concerns cross-company app and website tracking, while location is managed separately. Android’s documented permission choices let you decide when an app may access location, while advertising identifier controls are in Google/Ads settings. Neither platform’s setting should be read as a promise that every form of collection ends. Menu wording and availability can also differ by operating-system version; Android manufacturers may change paths and labels.

How to turn off cross-app tracking on iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
  2. Review the listed apps and switch off permission for any app you do not want to track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
  3. To stop apps from requesting this permission, switch off Allow Apps to Request to Track.

Apple says apps must ask before tracking a person’s activity across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising or sharing information with data brokers. In this context, tracking includes linking identifying information across third-party apps, websites, or locations for advertising, measurement, or data-broker sharing. When you deny permission, Apple says the app cannot access the IDFA, Apple’s advertising identifier, and developers may not replace it with other identifying information.

This is a control for the tracking Apple defines; it is not a universal switch for every data flow. It does not revoke other permissions, change separate account-sharing choices, or establish that an app has no other way to collect information. If your goal is to limit location or photos as well, review those categories separately. If you want to prevent future tracking requests, use the overall request switch; if you prefer to make decisions app by app, inspect the individual permissions shown on the Tracking screen.

Limit location access on iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Review apps individually. Choose While Using the App or a one-time option when that is sufficient; deny access if the app does not need location for a feature you use.
  3. For an app that needs a general area but not an exact position, turn off Precise Location.
  4. Review System Services separately, since several services can use location.

Location choices are a trade-off between access and functionality. Apple warns that switching Location Services off can stop important features from working. It also notes that emergency location may still be used to aid response efforts. If you are troubleshooting a feature that stopped working, revisit the permission for the relevant app or service rather than assuming that every location control has the same effect.

Think through each app’s actual use before changing its setting. If the feature only needs location while you are actively using the app, choose that narrower access instead of allowing access all the time. If an approximate area is adequate, turn off Precise Location for that app. If you are not sure whether the app needs location, you can deny or limit it, then check whether the feature you rely on still works. Restore access only if needed, and prefer the narrower choice that supports the feature.

Review other iPhone data permissions

In Settings > Privacy & Security, inspect categories such as Contacts, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, and Camera. Remove an app’s access if it is not needed for a feature you use. If you are unsure, consider what the app does: an access change may affect a feature that relies on that category.

These category switches control the app’s access through the device permission. They do not, on their own, change data shared with a separate account or settle what a company collects independently of that permission. Treat those as distinct privacy decisions. For example, revoking device access to a category is not the same action as changing what you have shared in the app’s account settings. This distinction matters if your aim is broader than preventing access through the phone’s permission system.

Use App Privacy Report to audit iPhone access

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
  2. Enable the report. It begins collecting information only after activation.
  3. Return to the report later to review how often and when apps accessed sensitive data or device sensors over the past seven days, along with network activity.

The report helps you spot access patterns; it does not block access or replace the permission controls above. Because collection begins only when you enable it and the report covers a limited recent window, it will not show activity from before activation or provide an unlimited history. Apple says report data is encrypted and stored on the device.

Use it as an audit tool: check which apps accessed sensitive data or sensors and when, then decide whether a permission still makes sense for how you use that app. The report can also show network activity, but that information is not itself a switch for stopping a connection. If you find access you do not want to allow, go back to the relevant category in Privacy & Security and change that app’s permission.

Review app permissions on Android

  1. To check one app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions, select the permission, and choose the least-access option that still supports the function you need.
  2. To review permissions by category, open Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, then inspect categories such as location and review which apps have access.
  3. For location, use an option such as Allow only while using the app or Ask every time instead of All the time when that is enough. Choose Don’t allow if the app does not need location for a feature you use.

Google’s documented location choices are All the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. Which options and steps are available can depend on the Android release. Phone makers can also change menu names and paths, so use Settings search for “permissions,” “Permission manager,” or the permission category if you cannot find the route shown here.

Reviewing by app is useful when you already know which app you want to check; reviewing by category can help you see which apps have access to a particular type of data. In either view, decide what access the app needs for a feature you actually use. Do not assume that changing location will change its access to another category: each permission is a separate decision. If location is only needed during active use, choose the foreground option; if you want to approve access as needed, use Ask every time when your phone offers it. If no feature you use requires location, choose Don’t allow.

Reduce access from apps you rarely use

For apps you seldom open, review Unused app settings and enable Pause app activity if unused where available. This is a way to limit activity for apps that have gone unused, not a substitute for checking permissions in apps you still use. Android also documents device-wide camera and microphone access controls under Privacy controls; review those if you want to manage those sensors at the device level.

These controls address different situations. Pausing activity for an unused app is relevant when you rarely launch it; it does not replace a deliberate permission review for apps you use regularly. Device-wide camera and microphone controls are broader than an individual app’s permission, so consider whether turning them off will interrupt a feature you need. If a camera- or microphone-dependent function stops working, check whether the device-wide control or the app’s own permission is responsible.

Reset or limit Android’s advertising identifier

Google Play’s help documentation describes controls for resetting the Advertising ID and opting out of Ads Personalization through Google/Ads settings. These controls apply to the advertising identifier and ad personalization. They do not revoke location, camera, or other app permissions, and they do not promise that all ads or data collection will stop.

Google cautions that some ad networks may continue showing personalized ads if they have not transitioned to the relevant controls. The settings path in the help documentation may also differ on newer Android releases. If the labels do not match your phone, search Settings for “Advertising ID” or “Ads” and review the available controls.

Resetting an identifier and opting out of personalization are not equivalent to removing every ad or stopping every collection practice. They address the advertising identifier and personalization controls described by Google Play. Keep app permissions in your review if your concern is an app’s access to location or other device data. If your concern is account-level sharing, those choices are separate from a phone permission or Advertising ID setting.

A practical order for reviewing settings

  1. Decide what you want to limit. Identify whether your concern is cross-app tracking, location, access to sensitive data, or identifier-based ad personalization. These settings address different activities.
  2. Review the relevant control. On iPhone, check Tracking for cross-company tracking, then Location Services and the other privacy categories as needed. On Android, check app permissions or Permission manager; use Google/Ads settings for Advertising ID and Ads Personalization.
  3. Choose the least access that still works. For location, consider while-in-use or ask-every-time access instead of all-the-time access where your device offers it. On iPhone, disable Precise Location if approximate location is sufficient.
  4. Test a feature you rely on. A permission change may affect an app feature. If something stops working, identify which access it needs and restore only the narrower permission that supports it.
  5. Audit again when useful. Review permissions periodically or when you install an app or notice a feature behaving differently. On iPhone, App Privacy Report can help you review recent access after you enable it, but it is not a blocker or a history from before activation.

This sequence avoids treating privacy as a single on/off choice. It also makes troubleshooting more precise: if an app cannot perform a location-dependent function, changing its tracking permission is unlikely to be the relevant fix. Check the specific category tied to the feature, and make a separate choice about whether that access is worth allowing.

What to check if a setting is missing or an app stops working

  • The menu path does not match: Use Settings search for the permission or category name. Android paths vary by device maker and release; some steps are available only on certain Android versions.
  • An app feature stops working: Identify the permission the feature needs, then consider restoring a narrower option, such as location access only while using the app, rather than granting broader access by default.
  • You want to stop one kind of tracking but not another: Check each control separately. Tracking permission, location permission, sensitive-data access, and advertising-ID settings address different things.
  • You want to know what an iPhone app has accessed: Enable App Privacy Report and review its recent activity. It is an audit view, not a block, and it has no record from before you enabled it.
  • You expect ad settings to stop all ads or collection: Advertising-ID and personalization controls are limited to those areas; they do not guarantee that ads or other collection cease.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop apps tracking me on my phone?

There is no single setting that covers every form of tracking. On iPhone, review Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, and separately review Location Services and sensitive-data categories. On Android, review app permissions or Permission manager, and consider the Advertising ID and Ads Personalization controls for identifier-based advertising. Choose the least access that still lets the features you use work.

How do I turn off tracking on my iPhone?

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Turn off permissions for individual apps, or switch off Allow Apps to Request to Track to stop apps from requesting this permission. This controls the cross-company tracking covered by Apple’s setting; it does not automatically remove location, camera, photo, or other permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I limit app location access on Android?

Open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions, or use Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. For location, choose a limited option such as Allow only while using the app or Ask every time where available. Choose Don’t allow if the app does not need location for a feature you use. Exact steps and available options can vary by Android release and phone maker.

Does turning off ad personalization stop all tracking?

No. The Advertising ID and Ads Personalization controls apply to the advertising identifier and personalization, not every app permission or data-collection practice. Google also cautions that some ad networks may continue personalized ads if they have not transitioned to the relevant controls. Review location and sensitive-data permissions separately if those are your concern.

Does App Privacy Report block an iPhone app from accessing data?

No. It is an audit tool that reports how often and when apps accessed sensitive data or device sensors over the past seven days, along with network activity. It starts collecting only after you enable it and does not replace the permission controls. Change a permission in the relevant Privacy & Security category if you want to limit access.

Will denying a permission make an app stop working?

It can affect a feature that depends on that permission. The impact depends on the app and the function you use. If a feature stops working, identify the relevant permission and consider a narrower option, such as allowing location only while using the app, rather than restoring broad access automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find the menu listed here?

Settings names and paths can differ by operating-system version, and Android manufacturers may use different labels. Some Android steps are available only on certain releases. Use Settings search for terms such as “permissions,” “Permission manager,” “Location,” “Advertising ID,” or “Ads” to find the control on your device.

The Bottom Line

Review tracking, location, sensitive-data, and advertising-identifier settings as separate controls. Limit each app to the access it needs, test features you rely on, and remember that these settings can reduce particular kinds of access or personalization without stopping every form of data collection.
