Use the least energy-intensive AI capability that can complete the job. Keep ordinary questions in text, reserve video generation and intensive reasoning for cases that genuinely need them, and limit agent-style workflows to tasks where their autonomy adds clear value. This is a practical rule based on the International Energy Agency’s task-level comparisons—not a promise of a specific percentage saving for an individual user.
What an AI energy footprint includes
When you use an online AI service, electricity is consumed in several places: servers that run the model, cooling and power equipment in the data centre, networks that carry requests and responses, and your own phone or computer. The most significant differences between AI activities occur on the service side, where model inference and media generation run on data-centre hardware.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says simple text queries typically consume less electricity than running a television over the same period. That comparison describes a typical task category, not a meter reading for your individual prompt. A short text request sent to a large model can still vary in energy use according to the model, response length, context, hardware, utilization and provider settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical implication is straightforward: match the capability to the job. Do not invoke a video generator to answer a question that text can handle, or run an autonomous multi-step workflow when a single response is enough.

Why task type matters more than prompt wording
AI workloads are not interchangeable. Text generation, image generation, video generation, extended reasoning and agentic workflows can involve different models, numbers of inference steps, output sizes and tool calls. The IEA’s 2026 analysis says video generation, reasoning and agentic tasks can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation.
Those are category-level comparisons. They do not mean every video request is a fixed multiple of every text request, and they do not establish a universal ranking of providers. They do show why choosing a lighter task mode is usually the most consequential personal decision you can make.
| AI activity | Relative energy guidance | Use it when | Practical lower-energy alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple text generation | Baseline category in the IEA comparison; typically less electricity than running a television over the same period | You need an explanation, draft, summary or transformation of text | Keep the request in text and provide the necessary context once |
| Reasoning-heavy text | Can be substantially more energy-intensive than simple text generation | The task benefits from deliberate multi-step analysis, checking or planning | Try a normal text response first; enable intensive reasoning only when the extra analysis changes the result |
| Agentic workflows | Can be hundreds or thousands of times more energy-intensive than simple text generation, depending on the workflow | The system must perform several tool calls or steps that you cannot efficiently do yourself | Break the work into a small, explicit sequence and stop after the required result |
| Image generation | More computationally intensive than a basic text exchange; a standardized consumer comparison is not established here | You need a visual asset rather than a description | Use text prompts, editing or an existing image when a new render is unnecessary |
| Video generation | Among the most energy-intensive categories identified by the IEA; can be hundreds or thousands of times above simple text per query | The moving image is the actual deliverable | Use a written storyboard, still image or short edit if motion is not essential |
The table deliberately avoids assigning a fixed watt-hour value to each row. The sources do not provide a comparable consumer-provider table, and a number without a defined model, hardware, duration and accounting boundary would be misleading.

- Define the deliverable before opening an AI tool. Write down whether you need an answer, a summary, a plan, an image, a video or an action carried out through tools. If the deliverable is text, start with a text interaction rather than a media generator or autonomous mode.
- Choose the least intensive mode that can meet the requirement. Many interfaces expose separate options for ordinary responses, extended reasoning, image creation or agents. Select the ordinary text option by default. Escalate only when the first mode cannot satisfy a stated quality, accuracy or execution requirement.
- Give complete context once. Include the relevant source text, constraints and desired format in the first request. This can reduce avoidable clarification turns and repeated regeneration, although no reliable universal percentage saving can be assigned to a particular prompt length or turn count.
- Set a stopping rule. Decide in advance what counts as good enough: for example, a 200-word summary with three action items, or one draft with a specified tone. Stop when that requirement is met instead of repeatedly asking for marginal variations.
- Reuse useful output. Save a strong explanation, template or outline and adapt it yourself where practical. Asking for the same explanation several times, regenerating near-identical images or rerunning an unchanged workflow adds work without necessarily improving the result.
- Keep media proportional to the need. Use a text description, storyboard or still image when the audience does not require motion. If video is necessary, define the duration, resolution, number of variations and revision limit before generating it.
- Use intensive reasoning selectively. Reasoning-heavy modes can be useful for difficult planning, verification or mathematical work. They are not energy-neutral, automatically more accurate for every question, or necessary for routine rewriting and lookup-style tasks.
- Constrain agent workflows. Give an agent a narrow objective, a finite list of tools, a maximum number of steps where the interface allows it, and a clear completion condition. Review the plan before allowing it to run. A single explicit action may replace a chain of searches, file operations and retries.
- Batch related work when it is convenient. Combining several related edits in one well-specified text request can be more sensible than starting separate sessions for each sentence. This is a workflow recommendation, not a measured guarantee for every service.
- Delete unnecessary experiments. Avoid generating large sets of images, videos or agent plans merely to browse possibilities. Make a short decision list first, then create only the candidates you will evaluate.
A practical decision tree before you submit a request
Step 1: Is the output purely informational or textual?
Use a standard text interaction for explanations, translation, extraction, summarization, outlining, drafting and code suggestions. A more elaborate mode is justified only by a concrete need such as multi-stage verification or a complex constraint set.
Step 2: Does the result need pixels or motion?
If no, do not select image or video generation. If a visual is needed, ask whether an existing asset, a simple diagram or a still image will work. Choose video only when timing, movement or a sequence is part of the requirement.

Step 3: Must the system take actions?
If you only need instructions, request a plan or checklist. Use an agent when it must actually perform several tool-based actions and the convenience or accuracy is worth that additional computation.
Step 4: Can you state a clear finish line?
Write the acceptance criteria before starting. Without a finish line, iterative prompting and autonomous loops can continue after the useful work is complete.
Can I tell how much electricity one AI prompt uses?
Usually not from the information available to an individual user. A defensible per-prompt figure requires provider-specific measurement and a stated methodology: the model and hardware used, input and output sizes, batching, data-centre overhead, cooling, networking boundary, time period and allocation method. The reviewed IEA material does not provide a standardized table that lets consumers compare services by electricity per prompt.
Your device’s battery or plug-in power meter measures the electricity used by your screen, processor, modem and other local equipment. It does not reveal the electricity consumed by cloud servers performing inference. Likewise, a data-centre total cannot be divided reliably by the number of prompts without detailed operational data.
Be cautious with calculators that present a single universal watt-hour value for “an AI prompt.” Unless they identify the service, workload and accounting boundary, treat the result as an estimate with unknown assumptions rather than a measurement of your request.

What the IEA’s global figures do—and do not—show
Aggregate infrastructure figures establish why efficiency matters, but they are not personal carbon or electricity receipts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Figure | What it describes | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| About 415 TWh in 2024, or 1.5% of global electricity | Worldwide electricity consumed by data centres, according to the IEA’s 2025 analysis | The energy used by one person, one provider or one prompt |
| Data-centre electricity use grew 17% in 2025 | Year-over-year change in the global data-centre sector in the IEA’s 2026 analysis | That every AI workload grew by 17% or that your usage caused a particular share |
| Electricity use at AI-focused data centres grew 50% in 2025 | Growth for the AI-focused subset identified by the IEA | A per-query increase, or a direct conversion to an individual footprint |
| 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030 | IEA projection for total data-centre electricity consumption | A guaranteed outcome or an AI-only forecast; it covers data centres broadly |
| Around 60% of demand from servers on average | Typical equipment share in modern data centres; the IEA notes that it varies by facility type | The server share for a particular provider or task |
The figures also explain why two statements can both be true: energy used per task can improve while total electricity demand rises. More efficient hardware and software reduce the resources needed for a given capability, but growing adoption, larger models and new applications can increase the number and intensity of tasks.
How to evaluate claims from an AI provider
When a service publishes an energy figure, check the boundary before comparing it with another service. Use these questions:
- What task was measured? A short text response, long-context analysis, image, video and agent run are different workloads.
- Which model and settings were used? Model version, reasoning mode, resolution, duration and output length can materially change the workload.
- What is included? Ask whether the figure covers servers only or also cooling, power equipment, networking and end-user devices.
- Is it a measured result or an estimate? A modeled average should not be presented as a meter reading.
- What period and region apply? Electricity mix, facility efficiency and utilization vary over time and location.
- Can the methodology be reproduced? Without enough detail to understand the calculation, cross-provider rankings are not reliable.
The IEA establishes substantial variation by task and data-centre type, but the reviewed sources do not establish a standardized ranking of consumer AI providers. A claim that one service always uses less electricity than another needs comparable provider disclosures, not an assumption based on model size or brand reputation.

Summarizing a report
Use a text model and specify the required structure—such as key findings, risks and open questions. If the report is long, process only the sections relevant to your decision where possible. Do not switch to an image or video workflow simply to make the summary more engaging.
Programming help
Start with a focused text request containing the error, environment, expected behavior and relevant code. Ask for a proposed fix and a test plan. An agent that edits files and runs commands is appropriate only when those actions save meaningful effort and can be bounded and reviewed.
Research and comparison
Request a table with defined criteria and ask the system to identify uncertainty. For high-stakes claims, verify the cited primary sources yourself. A longer reasoning mode may help organize competing evidence, but it should not replace source checking.
Visual design
Decide whether a written specification, wireframe or existing image is sufficient. If a new image is required, define dimensions, subject, style and the number of variants before generating. Avoid open-ended “give me many options” sessions.

Write the script, shot list and storyboard in text first. Generate only the clips that survive that review, and specify duration and revisions. Video is one of the categories the IEA identifies as potentially hundreds or thousands of times more energy-intensive per query than simple text, so unnecessary iterations are especially easy to avoid.

Guidance for teams and organizations
A team can reduce waste without banning useful AI. Create a simple capability policy:
- Default to ordinary text for drafting, extraction, translation and routine questions.
- Require a stated reason for intensive reasoning, agent execution, image generation or video generation.
- Define approval or spending limits for autonomous workflows that can make many tool calls.
- Provide reusable prompts, templates and source packets so staff do not repeat the same exploratory work.
- Record the task category, model mode and output requirement when evaluating efficiency.
- Ask vendors for methodology, scope and date when they publish energy or emissions claims.
Track useful outcomes—time saved, quality, errors and rework—alongside task counts. A lower task count is not automatically better if it produces more manual correction; the aim is to avoid unnecessary computation while still completing the work accurately.
Common mistakes and better corrections
“Shorter prompts always save a known percentage.”
No reliable universal percentage is established for personal use. Removing irrelevant context is sensible because it clarifies the task, but do not turn that practice into a precise savings claim.
“One local power meter tells me my prompt’s total footprint.”
It measures local equipment, not cloud inference. Use it to understand your device habits, not to assign a complete electricity value to an online AI request.
“A more capable mode is always the responsible choice.”
Capability should be proportionate to the need. Intensive reasoning and agentic workflows can consume much more energy than simple text and may add complexity when the task is routine.
“Efficiency gains mean AI demand will fall.”
Not necessarily. The IEA describes improving per-task efficiency alongside rising adoption and new energy-intensive applications. Both trends affect total demand.
“Global data-centre totals reveal my personal footprint.”
They provide infrastructure context. They cannot be converted into a defensible per-prompt estimate without provider-level operational data.

A concise checklist
- What exact deliverable do I need?
- Can ordinary text produce it?
- Am I selecting reasoning, an agent, image generation or video without a specific requirement?
- Have I supplied the necessary context and a finish line?
- Can I reuse or edit an existing result instead of regenerating it?
- If I am comparing providers, do their measurements use the same task and boundary?
The most dependable personal rule is to use a capable tool and task mode proportionate to the job, avoid needless repetition and reserve media-generating or autonomous workflows for work that truly benefits from them. That follows the IEA’s clear task-level differences while acknowledging that no source cited here can calculate the exact electricity used by your individual prompt.
