Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start by checking the signal at the IC’s input pin, not just at its source. A voltage that sits between guaranteed logic-low and logic-high levels, a slow or noisy edge, a floating input, or poor local supply bypassing can make switching appear erratic. Verify the exact device too: CD4050B is noninverting, while CD4049UB is inverting. Then compare timing against the datasheet conditions for that part.
Why is my CD4050 triggering randomly?
First determine whether the input pin is receiving a clean, valid logic level. The Texas Instruments CD4050B specifications at a 5 V supply guarantee a low input at or below 1.5 V and a high input at or above 3.5 V over the listed temperature range. Voltages between those limits are not a guaranteed logic state. Noise or a slowly changing edge that lingers in that interval can therefore make the observed switching time uncertain; this is an engineering diagnosis to verify by measurement, not a guaranteed explanation for every fault.

Probe the signal at the CD4050B pin. Check its minimum and maximum voltage, noise, rise and fall shape, and whether it pauses near the input threshold region. A clean waveform at the source may be degraded by a long wire, connector, or solder joint before it reaches the IC.

Confirm the installed device and its limits
Read the part marking and verify the supply voltage at the IC. CD4049UB is an inverting hex buffer; CD4050B is a noninverting hex buffer. Their related names do not mean their output polarity or voltage constraints are interchangeable. Check the exact device’s recommended operating conditions and the connected circuit’s input and output voltage requirements. TI notes that CD4049UB inputs must remain below VCC because of input clamp diodes, that outputs must not be pulled above VCC, and that output load current must stay within device limits.
#1 Best Overall
- CD4050BE is a hex non-inverting buffer with high input voltage capability for level shifting applications
- Level shifting and buffer applications requiring non-inverting signal conditioning between logic families
- Standard CMOS noise immunity with high input voltage tolerance for interface applications
- Six non-inverting buffers with high input voltage capability and improved output drive
- Logic level conversion signal buffering and interface applications between different voltage systems
Give every input a defined level
Do not leave unused inputs disconnected. Tie each unused input to a valid fixed high or low level appropriate to the circuit. TI’s datasheet states: “When using multiple bit logic devices, inputs must never float.” Also inspect used inputs, connectors, wiring, and solder joints for intermittent connections or pickup.
Bypass the supply locally
For a single-supply device, TI recommends a 0.1 µF bypass capacitor and says it should be installed as close to the power pin as possible. Check the supply and ground path during switching as well: the recommendation is sound practice, but whether supply disturbance is causing a particular symptom must be established by measurement.

Why does timing drift when the input edge is slow?
The output’s propagation delay is not the only contributor to the time you observe at the output. A slow or noisy input edge can take longer to cross the input’s effective switching region, and a signal that is not a valid guaranteed high or low can make the transition point ambiguous. This is why timing should be assessed only after checking the input waveform at the IC pin and the output load.
For the CD4050B, TI’s Rev. L datasheet gives propagation delays at 5 V under AC test conditions that include a 20 ns input rise/fall time, 50 pF load capacitance, and 200 kΩ load: low-to-high is 70 ns typical and 140 ns maximum; high-to-low is 55 ns typical and 110 ns maximum. These figures describe those test conditions, not a promise for a circuit with slower edges or different loading. Use the exact installed part’s specifications rather than applying CD4050B figures to the CD4049UB.

What should I check, in order?
- Identify the device and supply. Read the package marking, confirm the voltage at the IC, and check the correct part’s voltage limits against the connected circuitry.
- Inspect every input. Identify unused inputs and tie each to a valid fixed logic level. Check wiring and connections for intermittency or noise pickup.
- Measure at the IC pin. Observe voltage extremes, noise, and edge shape. For a CD4050B at 5 V, use 1.5 V maximum for a guaranteed low and 3.5 V minimum for a guaranteed high; do not assume the interval between them is a valid logic level.
- Check local power integrity. Fit a 0.1 µF bypass capacitor close to the supply pin and observe supply and ground behavior during switching.
- Compare timing under comparable conditions. Account for input rise/fall time and output loading before judging the observed delay against datasheet values.
- Consider input conditioning only after measuring the signal. If the source is inherently slow or noisy, a suitable hysteretic input-conditioning stage or a source redesign may help. Choose thresholds and components for the actual signal range, supply, noise, timing, and downstream requirements; there is no universal resistor network or replacement circuit without those details.
CD4049UB vs. CD4050B: what matters for troubleshooting?
| Check | CD4049UB | CD4050B | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output polarity | Inverting | Noninverting | A polarity assumption can make normal behavior look like a timing fault. |
| Function | Hex inverter/buffer and level conversion | Hex noninverting buffer and level conversion | Choose for the required logic function, not an assumed difference in false-trigger immunity. |
| Thresholds and timing | Device- and supply-specific; consult the datasheet (TI) | Device- and supply-specific; consult the datasheet (TI) | Specifications vary with part and conditions; do not transfer one device’s values to the other. |
| Voltage constraints | Observe datasheet clamp and voltage limits | Check the exact device’s limits for the application | Do not assume family members tolerate the same input or output voltages. |
Which sources establish these checks?
Texas Instruments’ product information identifies the device variants and package options: CD4050B product page. The detailed input, supply-bypass, voltage-limit, and timing guidance is in TI’s CD4049UB/CD4050B datasheet, Rev. L, revised February 2026. Thresholds and timing values depend on device variant, supply, temperature, and test conditions; the datasheet’s general application guidance does not replace validating the actual circuit.
