Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo reduce stuttering in an Unreal Engine 5 game, first identify when the hitch happens. A pause the first time an effect appears—or after a game or graphics-driver update—may come from shader or pipeline-state compilation. Hitches while entering new areas can instead involve loading, spawning, or streaming. Replay the same scene after an initial run before changing caches or buying hardware: timing and repeatability are useful clues, not proof of a single cause.
Start by matching the hitch to its trigger
Note whether stuttering happens once, returns after an update, or occurs repeatedly in the same situation. Also note whether it coincides with a particular material or visual effect, or with moving into a new area. These distinctions help narrow the cause; a player-facing hitch alone cannot identify it.

| When it happens | What it may indicate | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| The first time an effect or material appears | The game may be compiling a shader or creating a pipeline state just as it needs to render it. | Trigger the same effect again after the initial run and compare. |
| On the first run or after a driver update | Shader or driver caches may not yet contain work that later runs can reuse. | Replay the same area before clearing a cache. |
| While crossing into a new area or triggering many actors | Loading, spawning, or streaming can cause frame-time spikes independently of shader compilation. | Check whether the hitch follows a location or activity rather than a particular effect. |
| Repeatedly in the same scene, or across unrelated games | The trigger alone is not enough to diagnose it; the game, graphics API, driver state, and other causes may matter. | Record the conditions and check the game’s official support guidance. |
What shader and pipeline-state compilation have to do with a hitch
A game can need a shader or render pipeline state at the moment it draws an effect. If that work has not been completed or cached, the delay can interrupt frame delivery. Unreal Engine engineers Kenzo ter Elst, Daniele Vettorel, Allan Bentham, and Mihnea Balta describe the timing this way: “Shader compilation stuttering happens when a render engine discovers that it needs to compile a new shader right before it uses it for drawing something, so everything stops while waiting for the driver to finish compilation.” (Epic’s engineering article, February 4, 2025.)

As a result, an initially slower run or renewed first-use hitches after an update are possible; repeated stuttering is not automatically evidence of a cache problem. Epic also lists synchronous loading, excessive spawning, and streaming among causes of traversal hitches. (Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 performance guidance; Epic’s engineering article.)

What to do about first-run or post-update stutter
- Keep track of the trigger. Note the game, graphics API if known, driver or game update timing, location, and effect associated with the hitch.
- Replay the same scene or trigger. If the hitch is materially reduced on a later run, that is consistent with cache warm-up, but it does not prove that shader compilation caused the original pause.
- If it persists, broaden the diagnosis. Check for game-specific support guidance and consider loading or streaming triggers rather than repeatedly deleting caches.
AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 background shader compilation FAQ recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing performance measurements for the feature. That is AMD’s recommendation for this feature, not a guaranteed warm-up period for every UE5 game, GPU, or PC. (AMD support FAQ.)
When clearing a shader cache may help—and when it may not
Cache deletion is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general stutter optimization. Epic Support documents a specific case: Fortnite may repeatedly recompile DirectX shaders in DX12, causing heavy stuttering. Its support page describes vendor-specific Windows cache-clearing steps and warns that the first match afterward may still stutter while new shaders compile. Follow that page’s current steps only if you are troubleshooting the documented Fortnite DX12 issue; do not apply its paths to other games. (Epic Games Player Support: Fortnite DX12 stuttering.)

NVIDIA explains that its driver shader cache stores compiled shaders so later game runs can avoid recompilation. Its documentation also says a cache-size limit set too low can evict shaders still in use and contribute to stuttering. Check the current driver interface and your own configuration before changing a size limit; a particular setting is not established as right for every PC. (NVIDIA Manage 3D Settings reference.)
When the hitch happens while traversing the world
If pauses line up with entering a new area, loading assets, or bringing many actors into play, shader compilation is only one possibility. Epic’s Unreal Engine guidance identifies synchronous loading, spawning, and stream-in as processes that can produce frame-time spikes. These are game-side performance problems that cannot be reliably solved by assuming a faster GPU, more RAM, a different SSD, or better cooling is needed. For developers: investigate missed PSO precaching
Unreal Engine 5.8 describes PSO precaching as automatically collecting potential render pipeline states and compiling them asynchronously. It can reduce runtime hitches when the relevant states are anticipated, but uses system memory and background work, so configuration should be measured rather than assumed to be free. (Epic’s PSO Precaching documentation for Unreal Engine 5.8.)
- Consider outstanding precache requests during initial loading screens.
- Use PSO logs and Unreal Insights timers to find missed or late pipeline states. The documentation’s default runtime PSO hitch threshold is 20 milliseconds; this is an engine diagnostic default, not a universal threshold for human perception.
- The bundled PSO cache workflow can collect states during playtests so they can be compiled earlier. The cache is graphics-API-specific, and Epic advises assessing a build with a current cache.
Epic’s engineering article notes that Unreal Engine 5.2 introduced PSO precaching, while in-flight or uncovered work can still remain. It also cautions developers to investigate traversal hitches beyond PSO compilation. As an example specific to Fortnite, Epic says an empty driver cache adds around 20–30 seconds to loading into a Battle Royale match; that is not a general UE5 loading-time figure. (Epic’s engineering article.)
Quick Recap
What evidence to collect if stutter continues
- Whether the hitch occurs on first use, after an update, while traversing, or every time the same scene repeats.
- The game and graphics API in use, if known, and whether the issue affects one game or multiple unrelated titles.
- Whether replaying the trigger after an initial run changes the hitch.
- For a game-specific issue, the official support guidance and the conditions under which the hitch occurs. For development builds, relevant PSO logs and Unreal Insights timings.
