To reduce PC game stuttering, first identify when it happens and check system activity at that moment. A brief hitch on the first run after a graphics driver update may be shader processing; recurring stutters can instead come from background activity, a game or driver problem, demanding settings, or thermal throttling. There is no universal fix: change one relevant setting at a time and compare the result.
First identify the pattern
Note whether the stutter began after a graphics driver update, happens only the first time a game launches, appears when entering a new area, or recurs throughout a particular game. Record what was running and whether the problem repeats. That context helps distinguish temporary shader work from an ongoing performance constraint.

After a graphics driver update
Shaders may need to be processed or rebuilt after an update. Intel says this can cause brief pauses on Arc A-Series and B-Series graphics; its support page, last reviewed May 13, 2026, says processing can take several minutes depending on the game and system, and performance should stabilize when it finishes: Intel’s Arc post-update stuttering guidance. NVIDIA also documents that installing a driver clears its shader cache, so a game may stutter while shaders are rebuilt: NVIDIA Control Panel: Manage 3D Settings.

Check what the PC is doing during a hitch
Open Task Manager while the game is stuttering and look for unusually heavy CPU, memory, or disk use. Close only background apps you do not need; a process using system resources may be contributing, but its presence alone does not prove it is the cause. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends reviewing resource use and unnecessary startup or background activity: Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.
If the game or monitoring software shows temperatures, compare processor temperatures with the specification for that processor. Intel explains that exceeding the specified temperature can trigger throttling and reduce performance. Its FPS guidance was reviewed May 8, 2024 and describes a Windows 10 64-bit environment, so treat it as troubleshooting advice rather than a guarantee for every current PC: Intel: Correcting FPS drops and high CPU usage while gaming.

Rule out a game or driver problem
Confirm that the PC meets the game’s requirements and that the game is compatible with the system. Check for game updates and the current graphics driver. If the stuttering began immediately after changing drivers and continues after shader processing, investigate whether the game or driver has a known issue; Intel includes driver rollback as a possible consideration when a newer driver causes problems. Its game troubleshooting page is specific to Intel graphics: Intel: Troubleshooting common game issues on Intel Graphics.
Reduce settings that exceed available capacity
Lower a setting only when it plausibly matches the constraint. NVIDIA identifies overly high texture settings as a possible source of stutter, particularly when video memory is limited. Reducing texture quality can ease memory pressure, but it also makes textures less detailed; the best setting depends on the game and hardware: NVIDIA GeForce: How to Get Rid of Lag.

On Windows 11, Microsoft’s windowed-game optimizations apply to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Microsoft says the feature can reduce frame latency; it is not a general fix for every stutter or rendering mode. You can enable it in Windows Settings under System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings, or use per-game graphics settings where available. Restart the game after changing the setting. Details and applicability are on Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game optimization page.

Check feature-specific shader options carefully
Intel Precompiled Shaders is not a universal cache fix. Intel documents it for specified Arc hardware on Windows 10 and Windows 11, with a listed minimum driver, and for supported games installed through Steam. It is disabled by default on supported systems, and the supported-game list should be checked before relying on it. Intel reports that users typically see 20–50% faster initial loading times, with results varying by game and system; that is a vendor claim about loading time, not a general reduction in stuttering: Intel Precompiled Shaders.
Upgrade only after finding a bottleneck
Do not buy a graphics card, memory, storage, or cooling part just because a game stutters. First establish which component or condition is limiting performance, compare it with the game’s requirements, and check compatibility with the PC. A measured thermal problem, for example, is a reason to investigate cooling; stuttering by itself does not establish that a new cooler or any other component will help. Microsoft also cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant gains from general Windows performance steps.
