To free space safely, check each game’s current storage requirements, remove optional resources only through its own menus, and use the official launcher to update or repair files. Keep the game’s final installed size separate from the extra free space an update may need temporarily: a patch can require substantial room to download and unpack without permanently adding that much to the game.
Check what the storage figures mean
For each game, distinguish four different figures: its final installed footprint, the download size of an update, temporary space needed to unpack or apply that update, and optional data such as voice packs or chapter resources. A download-size estimate alone does not tell you how much free disk space you need.

For example, HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero support page, updated October 13, 2025, lists a 61 GB final PC installation and recommends 122 GB free before starting: the additional 61 GB is for decompression. It also recommends leaving extra space for future updates and patches. These figures apply to that game and the stated guidance, not to every PC gacha game or every later version. - Download size: the data the launcher needs to retrieve; it may not match the final increase in installed size.
- Temporary working space: free room the updater may need while downloading, unpacking, or replacing files.
- Optional resources: voice packs, languages, or selected story content, but only when that specific game offers a supported way to manage them.
Check the current official system/storage page and the notice for the patch you plan to install. Requirements change, so an old FAQ figure should not be treated as the current requirement.

Remove optional data through the game’s controls
First look for resource-management or voice-pack controls in the game or launcher. Zenless Zone Zero’s documented options include Base Resources for downloading mission resources for selected chapters and a voice-pack management screen with uninstall controls. Installed voice packs also affect the space needed for its pre-download. This is a title-specific example; do not assume another game has the same options. Before removing a voice pack or chapter resource, check whether the game will need to download it again if you switch languages or revisit that content. Menu names and resource policies can change between versions, so follow the controls shown in your current game.

Do not delete arbitrary folders from the installation directory to make room. The launcher may no longer recognize the game correctly, and removing files manually can leave the installation incomplete. For suspected corruption or a failed update, use the official launcher’s file verification or repair option instead. Manage updates without mistaking timing for savings
Use the official game launcher or platform updater rather than replacing files yourself. HoYoverse recommends its official update tool for Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero. Before a patch, check its notice for the current download or pre-download requirements and make sure the disk has enough free space to complete the operation.

What pre-download does
Pre-download is primarily a timing feature, not a way to shrink the installed game. Genshin Impact’s PC pre-install notice says players can pre-install while playing and that the feature reduces the time spent updating resources on first entry to a new version. Zenless Zone Zero’s notice describes a HoYoPlay Pre-Download control, says PC players can continue playing during pre-download, and notes that installed voice packs affect the required pre-download space. If an update stalls or fails
- Check that the target drive has enough free space for the current update process, not merely the expected final game size.
- Confirm the connection is stable; check whether firewall or antivirus settings are blocking the launcher.
- Close other disk-heavy tasks if the update is struggling, then use the launcher’s verification or repair control if files may be incomplete.
- If the official troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, reinstall through the official launcher as a fallback, allowing room for the download and installation process.
If pre-download will not fit, wait until the update is live only if the game’s current updater supports that approach. The available notices do not establish a universal amount of space saved by skipping pre-download. HoYoverse troubleshooting guidance

Move a game or consolidate launchers cautiously
If you are moving an installation into HoYoPlay, use the launcher’s current scan, associate, or manual path-selection option where available. HoYoPlay FAQ guidance for Honkai: Star Rail describes associating existing resources by automatic scan or manual selection, and warns that a deletion choice after association may remove resources from both launcher locations. If supported cleanup still leaves too little room for installations and patches, adding a larger compatible SSD can expand the capacity available to your game library. Before buying or moving a drive, check your computer’s supported interface, physical slot, and form factor, as well as whether the game launcher supports relocating the installation. Use the comparison below to choose between targeted cleanup and added capacity.
