In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), earn Gold on a weapon, then complete that weapon’s Obsidian challenge. You do not need Platinum or Damascus for Obsidian. The year matters: Modern Warfare II (2022) uses a different mastery-camo progression.
How the Modern Warfare (2019) unlock order works
- Level the weapon. This unlocks its camo patterns and challenges. Exact objectives vary by weapon; check that weapon’s camo challenge panel.
- Earn Gold. Complete all ten camo challenge sets for the weapon. Activision describes each set as a base pattern plus nine additional patterns earned through challenge tiers. Activision’s April 29, 2020 guide confirms Gold is the prerequisite for pursuing Obsidian.
- Choose your next goal. To pursue Obsidian, complete its requirement for that weapon category. For the broader mastery-camo collection, Gold across a weapon category unlocks Platinum; further category-wide progress is required for Damascus. The source guide does not enumerate every current Platinum or Damascus threshold.
Obsidian is a separate weapon-specific path: Activision explicitly says Platinum and Damascus are unnecessary prerequisites. Its guide states, “you only need to unlock Gold on a weapon in order to then go for Obsidian camo.”

Modern Warfare (2019) Obsidian requirements
Activision’s 2020 guide lists the following requirements. “Times” means the per-match condition must be met the listed number of times; qualifying kills can count toward more than one tally in a match. For example, the guide says 30 AK-47 kills in one match count as two 15-kill tallies.

Use the challenge shown in your game as the final authority if its displayed requirement differs. The Activision guide documents the criteria as of 2020; it is not a live challenge readout for an individual account.

How Modern Warfare II (2022) differs
Modern Warfare II uses Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion. Do not apply MWII’s challenge counts or weapon thresholds to the 2019 game.

Activision’s launch-period MWII progression guide explains the overall gates. Its category Gold thresholds were based on the number of weapons in each type at launch, rather than one universal checklist of required weapons.

What carries from MWII into Modern Warfare III?
Activision’s MWIII weapons and camo guide says MWII camo challenges carry forward into MWIII. The MWII completionist camos can only be equipped on the MWII weapon for which they were unlocked. MWIII’s own weapon mastery sets are separate, so carry-forward does not make the two games’ camo names or requirements interchangeable.
