Then raise screen brightness as needed. Settings can help the display compete with ambient light, but filters change the picture rather than remove reflections.
Start by changing the reflection
Glare often comes from a bright part of the surroundings reflected in the screen and lined up with your eyes. Try these free adjustments before changing settings:

- Tilt the phone a little, or rotate it between portrait and landscape, until the reflected bright shape moves away from the text or image you need to see.
- Shift your viewing position or move the phone to a different spot. Indoors, this may mean turning away from a ceiling lamp or window; outdoors, it may mean turning your back to the sun.
- Use your body, a nearby wall, or available shade to block direct light from reaching the display. Avoid covering the phone in a way that traps heat.
These steps follow the basic geometry of reflection; the best angle depends on the phone, light source, and where you are standing. Samsung describes reflected ceiling light and sunlight obscuring a display in its general explanation of glare, which concerns monitors rather than phone-specific testing: Samsung’s explanation of reflection glare.

Adjust brightness for the light around you
Increasing brightness can make screen content easier to see in a bright setting, though it does not stop the surface from reflecting light. Higher brightness can also use more battery. Use the phone’s brightness slider or its automatic brightness feature, and lower brightness again when the surroundings dim.

iPhone
Apple documents Auto-Brightness, which adjusts iPhone display brightness in response to ambient light. Find it at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. The setting is useful when lighting changes, but it does not eliminate reflections. Apple’s display-care guidance is available at About the Super Retina display and Super Retina XDR display on your iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy
Some Galaxy phones have an Extra brightness option for brighter conditions. Samsung says it is available only on select Galaxy Flip5, S22, S23, and S24 phones, with select carriers and software versions; it is not a general setting for every Galaxy model. On supported phones, Adaptive brightness must be off for the Extra brightness toggle to appear, and Samsung warns that using Extra brightness drains battery faster. Google Pixel
Pixel models offer brightness controls, but some display and comfort options are model-specific. Google’s Pixel help page identifies Comfort View on Pixel 10 models; it applies a filter to soften screen color, not to reduce reflected light. Google also notes that Screen attention works best when the display is well-lit but not in direct sunlight. See Google’s Pixel screen and display settings for the options available to your model.

If a bright screen feels harsh after you have dealt with the reflected light, an appearance or comfort setting may help. On iPhone, Reduce White Point tones down bright colors, while color filters and Smart or Classic Invert change how onscreen content looks. Apple’s iOS 26 guide also documents Display Pulse Smoothing for listed iPhone 17-family models and iPhone Air. These features affect the display image; they do not treat reflections on the glass. Consider a film only if free adjustments are not enough
If you want an added layer without choosing a matte protector, look for a model-specific anti-reflective film and verify that it is made for your exact phone. A Samsung listing for an anti-reflecting film for the Galaxy S25 FE is one example of this product category, not evidence that the film fits other phones or a comparative test of its effectiveness: Galaxy S25 FE anti-reflecting film listing.
Before buying, check the maker’s description and compatibility details, including any stated changes to clarity, touch response, fingerprint features, or replacement needs.
