Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your RTX 5090 power cable is getting hot, first shut down and check compatibility, seating and routing—do not try to cool or work around a damaged connection. A plug that is fully inserted, seated flush and free of strain is the starting point. NVIDIA does not specify a general safe cable-temperature target, so temperature alone is not a substitute for inspecting the connection.
What to do first if the cable feels hot
- Shut down and disconnect power before handling the connector. NVIDIA’s installation guide directs users to power off and unplug the PC before removing hardware: GeForce RTX 5090 User Guide.
- Inspect the cable, plug and GPU receptacle. Look for discoloration, melting, deformation or other visible damage. If you see damage or suspect overheating, stop using the system and contact the GPU or PSU manufacturer. Do not treat a fan, power limit or replacement cable as proof that potentially damaged hardware is safe.
- Confirm that the cable arrangement is approved for your exact GPU and PSU. Use the card and PSU manufacturers’ model-specific documentation; modular PSU cables should not be selected by connector shape alone.
- Check the GPU-side plug and PSU-side connection. The GPU plug must be fully inserted and seated flush. Secure the PSU end as well, where applicable.
- Plan a relaxed cable route. Leave enough room that the case panel and cable routing do not push sideways on the plug or force a tight bend close to it.
How to tell whether the GPU plug is fully seated
NVIDIA’s instruction is explicit: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.” Check that the connector sits evenly against the GPU socket rather than leaving a visible gap or tilting under cable tension. NVIDIA also recommends connecting the power dongle to the GPU first so it can be firmly and evenly seated.

ASUS advises plugging the connector securely at both ends. Avoid repeatedly unplugging and reinserting it: ASUS warns that repeated insertions can degrade the connection. If seating is uncertain, do not keep cycling the plug; follow the card maker’s instructions or ask its support team for help.

The RTX 5090 draws substantial power, but GPU power figures are not cable-temperature limits. NVIDIA lists 575 W Total Graphics Power and 1000 W required system power for its RTX 5090 Founders Edition specifications, and notes that add-in-board specifications vary.

- 【For RTX 3090Ti, RTX 40 and 50 Series】Fasgear PCIe 5.1 16(12+4)pin male to 4X8 pin female sleeved extension cable is made for GeForce RTX 5090 5080 5070 5070Ti 4090 4080 4070ti 3090Ti GPU. That means, this 12VHPWR PSU cable can extend length and work well with the original power cable to get stable and reliable performance. Note: This GPU sleeved extender cable is not fitted for 12pin GeForce RTX 3090 Series & 8pin RTX 4070 GPU. Only support 12+4pin GPU like RTX 3090Ti, RTX 40 and 50 Series
- 【Up to 600W Output】Fasgear 12V-2x6 PSU extension cable supports up to 600W output. The plug terminals of the graphics card cable are made of alloy copper and tinned material, which can bring stable and higher currents. NOTE: This extension cable requires four unoccupied 8-pin PCI-e ports on your power supply to properly function. Connecting fewer than four connectors to your power supply may cause system damage.
- 【Neat and Tidy】Fasgear 40cm 4x8 pin GPU riser extension cable, compared with the original 10cm power cable, can make your DIY computer system neat and tidy. With 4 transparent cable comb acrylic clips, it is convenient for you to manage this sleeved extension cable cord. Thus, this extension cable can make the appearance of the computer system more beautiful. Note: This cable is a 12V-2x6 sleeved extension cable. And it needs to be worked with the original power cable.
- 【16AWG Tinned Copper Wire】Fasgear 12V-2x6 PCI-e 5.1 extension cable contains 16AWG tinned copper wire. Compared with the standard 18AWG power cord, this updated 16AWG tinned copper wire can bring stable voltage transmission and higher power output. Meanwhile, this tinned copper can prevent oxidation. As for the 12+4pin connector, 2 of 4 pins are connected with power wires while another 2 pins are GND wires
| Power arrangement | What the NVIDIA Founders Edition guide specifies | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Included adapter | At least four independent, dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables feeding the adapter | Use the included adapter as directed and confirm the cable arrangement in the guide for your card revision. |
| Native 16-pin cable | One 600 W or greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable | Confirm the cable is supported by the exact PSU model; do not assume a cable from another modular PSU is compatible. |
There is a documentation difference worth checking rather than guessing through: NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product-page installation panel depicts three PCIe 8-pin connectors and a 450 W-or-greater Gen 5 cable, while the separate Founders Edition user guide gives the four-independent-cable and 600 W-or-greater configurations above. Follow the current documentation and support guidance for your specific card revision, not a configuration inferred from a different page.
If replacing a cable or choosing a PSU, a native 12V-2×6 cable may be an option, but only when the PSU maker confirms exact compatibility. ASUS recommends that new buyers prefer a native 12V-2×6 PSU and cable. Do not buy or connect a cable described merely as “universal.”

- Over Temperature Protection (OTP) – The cable features built-in hardware to monitor for extreme temperatures and will shut off power to the GPU if a threshold is exceeded, which prevents damage to the GPU and the cable
- Dual-Tone 12V-2x6 Connector – The cable features grey endpoints where the shaded section vanishes when the connector is fully inserted, giving visual confirmation of a secure connection
- Compatible with Most Modern PSUs – The cable works with any power supply with a native 12V-2x6 connection
- Flexible Debossed Cables – The cables feature a flexible debossed design that allows for easy and precise cable routing while giving your build a professional look
- Stealth OTP Sensor – The Over Temperature Protection (OTP) monitor is incorporated into the cable with a stealth design that is clean and unobtrusive
Route the cable without bending or loading the plug
After confirming the power arrangement, route the cable so it approaches the GPU connector naturally, with no tight bend or sideways pull near the plug. Make sure the case panel does not press on the cable or push the connector out of alignment. ASUS advises careful routing and avoiding tight bends.

Temperature readings and monitoring: what they can and cannot tell you
NVIDIA’s reviewed RTX 5090 guidance does not establish a general cable-temperature target. The 575 W TGP and 1000 W system-power figures describe GPU and system power requirements, not a safe cable temperature. A reading by itself therefore cannot certify that a connector is installed safely.
Some ASUS ROG Astral and Matrix cards support per-pin monitoring through GPU Tweak III Power Detector+. This is specific to supported models and does not replace correct cable selection, full seating or safe routing. Do not probe the connector, modify it or deliberately create a current imbalance to test its temperature. ASUS’s imbalance tests are vendor lab tests, not a home procedure.

How to interpret cable-maker temperature claims
ASUS reports that, in an intentionally extreme imbalance test, a modified standard cable reached 146°C while its ROG Equalizer cable was approximately 74°C. ASUS also reports that the Equalizer stayed below its cited 105°C material-rated threshold during a 10-day constant 600 W test at 55°C ambient. These are ASUS vendor test results, not independent comparisons or normal RTX 5090 operating temperatures. They do not establish a general safe-temperature threshold or make a damaged connection safe.
