If you want Linux command-line tools or apps while keeping Windows 11 as your main desktop, start with WSL 2. Choose a local Linux virtual machine when you need a separately managed guest, snapshots, or easier cloning and migration. Install Linux directly on the hardware when direct device access or avoiding virtualization overhead matters more than staying in a Windows-hosted workflow. If you need only a few utilities, a Windows-native tool may be enough—but check that it supports the specific task you have in mind.
Choose based on what you need Linux to do
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| WSL 2 | Linux shells, development tools, and supported Linux GUI apps alongside Windows apps. | It uses a Linux kernel in a lightweight virtual machine, so it requires hardware virtualization and the Virtual Machine Platform feature. Keep project files on the same OS filesystem as the tools that use them for better cross-filesystem performance. |
| Local Linux VM | A guest OS managed separately from Windows, such as for a lab or test environment. | Requires a hypervisor and resources for the guest. Microsoft says VMs are easier to clone or migrate than WSL distributions. Running a hypervisor inside the guest requires nested virtualization and adds overhead. |
| Bare-metal Linux | Work that needs direct access to device hardware or avoiding virtualization overhead. | You leave the ordinary Windows-hosted workflow; plan separately for whether and how Windows and Linux will coexist. |
| Windows-native Linux-like tools | A small set of specific command-line utilities without a need for a Linux environment. | Do not assume a Windows-native tool is interchangeable with a Linux kernel environment. Verify support for the commands and behavior your workload requires. |
There is no universal performance winner established for these options. Results depend on the workload, and the available documentation does not provide a general benchmark that would justify choosing one on speed alone.

When WSL 2 is the practical starting point
WSL is designed to run Linux tools and apps directly on Windows. WSL 2 is integrated into that workflow, but it is still virtualized: Microsoft describes it as using a real Linux kernel in a lightweight utility VM. It is available on Windows 11 Home as well as other supported desktop editions, using the Virtual Machine Platform component.
Keep files near the tools that use them
Cross-filesystem performance is a WSL 2 exception worth accounting for. For better performance, keep a project on the filesystem of the OS hosting the tools that operate on it: Linux-side tools with Linux-side files, or Windows-side tools with Windows-side files. This is especially relevant when builds, package managers, or other tools repeatedly access many project files.

GUI apps and systemd
WSL supports Linux GUI applications and systemd. Those capabilities can cover more than shell-only work, but they do not establish that every Linux workload will behave as it would on a full Linux installation. Microsoft’s documented GUI setup also has a vGPU driver prerequisite; check the applicable setup requirements for the machine before relying on Linux GUI apps.
When a VM or bare-metal install makes more sense
Use a local VM for a separately managed guest
A VM is a better fit when you want a distinct Linux guest with its own lifecycle, or when cloning and migrating the environment matters. It needs a hypervisor and enough host resources for the guest. If the guest itself must run a hypervisor, confirm nested virtualization support: that adds another virtualization layer and overhead.

Use bare-metal Linux for direct hardware access
Running Linux directly on the device avoids virtualization overhead and gives Linux direct access to the hardware. The trade-off is that Linux is no longer simply another environment inside the usual Windows desktop workflow. Decide how you will retain access to Windows applications or coexistence with Windows before installing.

Use native Windows utilities only for specific needs
If the goal is a particular command-line utility, a Windows-native alternative may be simpler than setting up a Linux environment. The important distinction is that a utility running on Windows is not automatically equivalent to a Linux system. Check command compatibility, scripts, dependencies, and any assumptions about Linux kernel behavior for the exact task.

Install WSL 2 on Windows 11
On a supported Windows system, Microsoft’s documented quick path is to run the installer command from an elevated terminal. The command enables WSL and Virtual Machine Platform, installs the latest Linux kernel, sets WSL 2 as the default, and installs Ubuntu by default. You can select another distribution.
- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
wsl --install. - Restart Windows if prompted, then complete the Linux distribution’s first-run setup.
- If you want a distribution other than Ubuntu, select one using Microsoft’s WSL installation guidance.

- Confirm hardware virtualization is enabled in the computer’s firmware settings.
- Verify that the Virtual Machine Platform Windows feature is enabled.
- If Windows itself is running inside a VM, check whether the host configuration supports and has enabled nested virtualization.
- If you use third-party hypervisor software, check its current documentation for version and configuration compatibility with Windows and WSL.
Microsoft notes that third-party hypervisor compatibility can depend on software versions and configuration, so a general statement cannot establish compatibility for every host product.

Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Want Linux shells or development tools integrated with Windows? Start with WSL 2, provided hardware virtualization is available.
- Need a Linux guest that is managed, cloned, or migrated separately? Consider a local VM.
- Need direct hardware access or want to avoid virtualization overhead? Consider bare-metal Linux and plan Windows coexistence separately.
- Need only a handful of commands? Check whether Windows-native tools support those exact commands and workflows.
- Rely on GUI apps, systemd, or heavy file access? Verify the relevant WSL feature requirements and keep files with the tools that use them.
