How to Reduce Risk on a D-Link DIR-822A While CVE-2026-86510 Has No Fix

D-Link lists DIR-822A firmware A_101 as affected by CVE-2026-86510. Until a vendor fix is published, verify your hardware revision and reduce network exposure without assuming the precautions eliminate the vulnerability.

For now, reduce the DIR-822A’s exposure and limit who can manage it; do not assume those steps remove the flaw. D-Link’s advisory identifies firmware A_101 as affected by CVE-2026-86510 and says the issue is under investigation. The CVE record currently lists no vendor fix or workaround. Those are the published statuses as of D-Link’s notice, last updated 21 September 2026, and could change with a later advisory.

What is affected

D-Link’s notice identifies the DIR-822A running firmware A_101 as affected by CVE-2026-86510. The issue is an out-of-bounds write in the L2TP Control Message Parser’s tunnel_set_params function. The CVE record classifies it as CWE-787 and CWE-119. The available descriptions characterize it as network-reachable and requiring low privileges; they do not establish that it is unauthenticated. Verify your model, hardware revision, and firmware

Do not rely on the product name alone. D-Link says hardware revision and geographic scope are still being confirmed, and firmware can differ by revision. Check the router’s label for its exact model and hardware revision, then check the installed firmware version in its management interface. Compare those details with the applicable regional D-Link support page before installing any update.

#1 Best Overall
D-Link WiFi Router AC1200 High Power Gigabit Ethernet Dual Band Mesh Wireless Internet for Home Gaming Parental Control Wi-Fi (DIR-1260)
  • AC1200 dual-band speeds up to 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz) plus 867 Mbps (5 GHz)
  • High-Power amplifiers provide wider coverage
  • Mesh Smart Roaming connects your mobile devices to the strongest Wi-Fi signal as you roam
  • MU-MIMO technology sends data to more devices simultaneously
  • Gigabit Ethernet Internet WAN port ready for high-speed internet connections
  • Confirm the label says DIR-822A.
  • Record the hardware revision printed on the label.
  • Check the installed firmware version in the management interface; A_101 is the version named in the advisory.
  • Check the support page for your region for updates to the affected scope and available firmware.

Reduce exposure while no fix is listed

D-Link’s interim precautions focus on limiting exposure and access. They reduce opportunities for unwanted access but do not demonstrate that the vulnerable parser is unreachable or eliminate CVE-2026-86510.

  1. Avoid unnecessary public Internet exposure. Review how the router is reachable from outside your network and remove exposure that is not needed for its role.
  2. Restrict remote management. Disable it if you do not need it; if it is required, limit access to trusted systems and users using the controls available in your network and firewall.
  3. Limit administrative access. Keep router administration available only to trusted systems and authorized users. Avoid managing it from untrusted networks.
  4. Monitor D-Link’s regional support page. Check the applicable page for a revised advisory, clarified hardware scope, or firmware release.
  5. Install only a matching official firmware release. Use firmware D-Link specifies for the exact model and hardware revision, and follow its release instructions. D-Link warns that firmware for one revision may not work with another.

What to do if an update appears

Verify that the release applies to the DIR-822A and your exact hardware revision, and read D-Link’s instructions before applying it. Do not install firmware intended for another revision or rely on unofficial firmware or unverified workarounds. The CVE record’s current “no vendor fix or workaround” status is not a promise that D-Link will never publish one; check the advisory again before making a firmware decision.

When replacing the router may be necessary

If the router cannot be patched and its role requires exposure or management access you cannot adequately restrict, consider replacing it with a device that receives security updates and fits your WAN and Wi-Fi requirements. No replacement model has been assessed here, and changing hardware is not evidence by itself that a deployment is secure. Confirm update support and compatibility before choosing a replacement.

Keep this issue distinct from the other DIR-822A notice

D-Link’s SAP10516 notice also lists CVE-2026-86296, a separate issue in the udhcpcd component. It is not the L2TP Control Message Parser flaw discussed here; consult D-Link’s notice for its separate details and scope. D-Link advisory SAP10516
