How a Cobalt–Uranium–Cobalt Molecule Approaches 10 Cumulative Bonds

Researchers synthesized a linear cobalt–uranium–cobalt complex whose calculated bonding model approaches cumulative quintuple bonding across three metal atoms—not a uranium–uranium quintuple bond.

A newly synthesized cobalt–uranium–cobalt molecule has been interpreted as approaching cumulative quintuple bonding across its three-metal core. Chemistry World describes the result as “10” cumulative metal–metal bonds, but that is shorthand for a calculated mix of two-center and multicenter interactions—not ten equivalent ordinary bonds, and not a uranium–uranium quintuple bond.

What the researchers made

The molecule has a linear cobalt–uranium–cobalt core, supported by a phosphorus-containing ligand. The authors describe it as an all-metal analog of uranyl and report its synthesis and characterization. Their paper proposes a bonding model they call “cumulative quintuple bonds” for the interactions across this three-metal unit.

The key word is cumulative: the bonding picture adds up distinct interactions involving the neighboring cobalt and central uranium atoms, as well as the three-atom framework. It does not describe a single uranium–uranium bond.

What “10 bonds” means in the reported model

Chemistry World’s accessible summary calls the result ten cumulative metal–metal bonds across the three atoms. That number summarizes the authors’ more detailed orbital and multicenter bonding analysis; it should not be read as ten identical, localized bonds laid out in a simple chain.

The model includes U–Co sigma, pi and delta contributions, a three-center-two-electron delta bond, and delta hyperconjugation. In the reported accounting, these are distinct components of the overall bonding description. The evidence combines experimental synthesis and characterization of the trinuclear species with advanced quantum-chemical calculations to interpret its bonding.

How it compares with earlier metal–metal bonding milestones

Earlier milestones involved bonds between two metal atoms. Chemistry World recounts a rhenium–rhenium quadruple bond reported in 1964 and a chromium–chromium quintuple bond reported in 2005. The cobalt–uranium–cobalt result differs in both the number of atoms in the bonded unit and the cumulative, multicenter nature of its proposed bonding model.

Why this is not the uranium–uranium quintuple bond

Uranium also appeared in a distinct 2005 result: a Nature paper on diatomic U₂ reported quantum-chemical calculations interpreted as a quintuple bond, with three electron-pair bonds and four one-electron bonds in that interpretation. That was a theoretical result about a molecule containing two uranium atoms. In the newer compound, uranium sits between two cobalt atoms; its reported cumulative bonding is not a U–U bond.

What the researchers say about the limit

Congqing Zhu of Nanjing University, who led the work, told Chemistry World: “Our work likely represents the limit of cumulative bonding in trinuclear systems.” He also said “it’s hard to imagine any atom forming more than 10 bonds with two neighbouring atoms”. These are Zhu’s assessments of how far cumulative bonding might go, not an established universal limit on bonding.
