You can reduce OLED burn-in risk while gaming by avoiding long, unattended displays of paused games or static menus, using available screen-movement and logo-dimming features, and keeping the TV or monitor’s panel-care settings enabled. Game HUDs are not a reason to stop gaming: the concern is cumulative exposure to bright elements that stay in the same place, and there is no universal safe-hours threshold for every OLED model.
How can you prevent OLED burn-in while gaming?
Make the small adjustments that limit repeated exposure to the same bright screen elements:

- Step away from a paused game. Return to a moving scene, turn off the display, or let its screen saver or sleep behavior take over rather than leaving a paused game or static menu up for a long stretch. LG says its TV screen saver activates after approximately two minutes of detected inactivity in specified paused-video or no-signal situations; behavior can differ in built-in apps (LG USA Support).
- Enable built-in panel protection. Depending on the product, settings may move the image slightly, dim static logos, or run automatic panel-care cycles. Keep these features enabled where available, and use the manual for your exact model: feature names, availability, and operation vary by generation and region.
- Consider logo dimming. If the same bright HUD elements dominate long sessions and your display offers logo or static-image dimming, enable it. Samsung describes Low and High options, with High reducing fixed-logo brightness further; LG describes automatic logo luminance adjustment. These implementations are model-specific (Samsung; LG Canada; LG USA Support).
- Avoid unnecessarily high sustained brightness for static-heavy play. You do not need to give up HDR, but consider a less aggressive brightness or picture mode if you regularly play content with bright, fixed HUD elements for extended periods. LG identifies vivid mode or very high brightness over extended periods as a possible risk factor (LG USA Support).
- Let automatic care finish. If the TV or monitor schedules a compensation or cleaning cycle, follow its manual and allow it to run as directed. Do not start manual refresh cycles repeatedly as routine prevention; the timing and purpose depend on the model.
Can a game HUD cause OLED burn-in?
It can contribute to risk if bright interface elements stay in the same locations through prolonged or repeated use. Samsung gives examples including a racing-game speedometer, an action-game crosshair, and a health bar, and advises avoiding games that display fixed images for a long time (Samsung Caribbean Support). LG also identifies prolonged paused-game display and very high brightness over extended periods as risk factors (LG USA Support).

That does not mean gaming itself causes burn-in or that a HUD will inevitably leave a mark. Risk is cumulative and model-dependent; the reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universally safe number of gaming hours, a single ideal brightness setting, or a required break interval. Treat repeated exposure to the same bright fixed elements as the behavior to manage.

Should you turn on Pixel Shift?
Yes, if your display offers a screen-movement protection feature, leave it enabled. Samsung calls its feature Pixel Shift and describes it as moving pixels at intervals; LG calls its feature Screen Shift and describes slight screen movement. Some models perform this movement by default instead of providing a menu toggle, so check the model’s settings and manual rather than assuming the option is missing or disabled (Samsung; LG Canada).
Pixel Shift reduces the time a particular pixel displays the same part of an image; it is one layer of protection, not a guarantee against persistent damage. It does not replace avoiding unattended static screens or using other care features available on your model.

What do panel-care and pixel-refresh features actually do?
Manufacturers use different names and schedules for automatic compensation or cleaning. Samsung’s Pixel Refresh and LG’s Pixel Refresher are not interchangeable promises about timing, and a refresh should not be treated as a cure for permanent burn-in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- LG televisions: LG’s USA support page says its Pixel Refresher runs after 2,000 cumulative hours and takes about an hour after the television is turned off. That is LG’s published guidance for applicable TVs, not a schedule for every OLED display (LG USA Support).
- Samsung televisions: A Samsung Hong Kong guide says the described Pixel Refresh operation turns the TV off for more than an hour and notes that support varies by model. This regional guidance should not be generalized to all Samsung TVs or other manufacturers’ products (Samsung Hong Kong).
Use the exact model’s instructions before starting a manual cycle. Let scheduled automatic care run, and do not interrupt it unless the manual says it is safe to do so.

Is image retention the same as burn-in?
No. A faint image that appears briefly after changing content may be temporary image retention and can fade. LG distinguishes that from burn-in, which “lasts much longer, and it’s usually visible even when playing other content” (LG USA Support, June 26, 2026). A mark that disappears is not the same as persistent damage across different content.

- Change the content and observe it. Check whether the mark fades or remains visible across varied scenes rather than only on the screen where you first noticed it.
- For a faint, temporary-looking mark, give the display time off. LG says short-term retention can often be mitigated by turning the display off for a while and watching varied content (LG Canada).
- If it persists, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Samsung advises running Pixel Refresh when experiencing image retention and contacting service if the issue persists (Samsung Caribbean Support). A refresh may help with retention, but it is not a guaranteed repair for permanent burn-in.
- Check the warranty for your product and country. Coverage varies by model and region, so consult the specific warranty terms or contact the manufacturer’s support service.
Do not rely on third-party “burn-in fixer” videos as proven repairs. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that such videos reverse persistent panel damage.

Do OLED types have different gaming burn-in risk?
There is not enough evidence here to rank current OLED television or monitor technologies universally by gaming burn-in resistance. In a 2023 accelerated investigation, RTINGS reported that its tested Samsung S95B and Sony A95K QD-OLED TVs showed signs of permanent image retention after two months of a static CNN schedule, while its tested LG C2 and G2 WOLED TVs were clean at that checkpoint. RTINGS described the schedule as extreme and estimated it as roughly four hours of CNN daily for about eight months without changing channels or watching anything else. That is an account of the test exposure, not a predicted failure time for a gamer, and it applies to those samples rather than all current TVs or monitors. RTINGS also noted uncertainty about whether QD-OLED monitor panels behave the same (RTINGS, 2023).
When assessing a particular display, check its own documentation for screen movement, logo dimming, screen saver behavior, panel cleaning, and warranty terms in your country. The presence of one feature—or results from another model—cannot guarantee how a different display will handle your use.
