To use a travel router with hotel Wi-Fi, connect the router to the hotel network in its repeater or Wi-Fi-as-WAN mode, complete any hotel sign-in page, then connect your devices to the router’s own Wi-Fi. The exact menu names vary by brand and firmware; the steps below use GL.iNet Router Docs version 4 as a concrete example.
What you need before you start
- A travel router and its power supply.
- A phone or computer that can join the router’s setup Wi-Fi.
- The hotel Wi-Fi name and, if required, its password or login details.
- The router’s setup instructions. The initial Wi-Fi name and password, as well as the admin-page address, vary by manufacturer. For GL.iNet devices, the documented default admin address is
192.168.8.1.
A travel router does not replace the hotel’s internet service or its login requirements. It joins the hotel Wi-Fi upstream and provides a separate local network for your devices.

Set up the router on hotel Wi-Fi
- Power on the travel router. Wait for it to finish starting up, then connect your phone or computer to the router’s setup Wi-Fi. Use the credentials on the router label or in its manual.
- Open the router’s admin page. Enter the address specified in the manufacturer’s instructions in a browser. For GL.iNet devices, Router Docs version 4 lists
192.168.8.1as the default. Create an administrator password if the setup prompts you. - Open the upstream Wi-Fi setting. On GL.iNet’s version 4 interface, go to INTERNET → Repeater, then select Connect. Other brands may call this repeater, Wi-Fi-as-WAN, or use another label. Follow the instructions for your model and firmware. GL.iNet’s repeater guide documents its version 4 flow.
- Choose the hotel network. Select the hotel’s Wi-Fi name (SSID) from the scan, enter its Wi-Fi password if requested, and apply the connection. If the network is hidden or missing from the scan, GL.iNet documents a Join Other Network option for manual entry. A network may also be absent if the router does not support the band or channel it uses.
- Complete the hotel sign-in if one appears. Keep your phone or computer connected to the travel router and open a browser. If the hotel shows a captive portal, follow its prompts—for example, room details, a password, or acceptance of terms. The sign-in page may not open automatically. See GL.iNet’s version 4 captive-portal guide for its device-specific instructions.
- Connect your other devices. Once the setup device can access the internet, join the travel router’s local Wi-Fi from your laptop, tablet, phone, or other devices. Use the router’s local Wi-Fi name and password, not the hotel’s, unless they happen to be the same.
What repeater mode does—and what it does not do
In GL.iNet’s documentation, repeater mode connects the router to an existing wireless network such as hotel Wi-Fi. Its routers use WISP mode by default in this setup: the router creates its own subnet and acts as a firewall between that subnet and the public network. This describes the documented GL.iNet behavior, not a guarantee about every travel router or configuration. See the repeater guide.
The practical convenience is that your devices can use one familiar local Wi-Fi network instead of each joining the hotel SSID individually. That does not override hotel rules, device limits, registration steps, or access controls. Follow the property’s policy and ask staff if you are unsure whether a router is permitted. GL.iNet discusses hotel Wi-Fi and device limits in its hotel Wi-Fi guidance.

If the router connects but the internet does not work
Joining the hotel SSID is only one part of the connection. A captive portal, incorrect credentials, or network compatibility issue can still prevent internet access. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the hotel network details. Check that you selected the right SSID and entered the correct Wi-Fi password. If the SSID is not listed, check whether your router supports the hotel network’s band and channel; use manual network entry if your model provides it.
- Try the portal from a connected device. Reconnect your phone or computer to the travel router, open a browser, and try to load the hotel login page. Complete any room-number, password, or terms step that appears.
- Follow instructions for your router’s firmware. Captive-portal settings and menu paths can differ by model and software version. GL.iNet has separate guides for Router Docs version 4 and Router Docs version 3; use the one that matches your device.
- Ask hotel staff about registration restrictions. Some networks require device registration or verification that router settings cannot resolve on their own. GL.iNet documents MAC-address cloning as a possible troubleshooting step in some cases and notes that strict verification may require the hotel to whitelist the router’s factory MAC address. Cloning makes the router present another device’s address to the network, so do not assume it will work or use it to evade hotel policy; consult staff and follow their rules.
Choosing a travel router for hotel use
Check the documentation for the exact model before relying on it for a trip. Look for the supported Wi-Fi bands and channels, how its repeater or Wi-Fi-as-WAN mode works, the captive-portal instructions, the current firmware interface, and the ports and power arrangement you need. GL.iNet’s BE9300 user guide, for example, describes repeater use on hotel Wi-Fi. The available documentation does not establish a cross-brand ranking or guarantee that a particular router will work at every hotel.
