You can often reduce noise without replacing a circuit, but the right fix depends on where the noise enters. An FFT shows what appears in the measured signal; it does not identify the cause. First compare the spectrum with the time trace and DC level, then check the leads, grounding, power and measurement setup before changing the circuit.
This guide treats “Fourier transform circuit” as an analog signal path whose output is being inspected with an FFT. If you mean a digital processor performing a Fourier transform, these analog troubleshooting steps may not apply.

Start by establishing what is actually noisy
Before making a modification, capture a baseline you can compare against. Record the FFT settings, sample rate, input condition, time-domain trace and DC level. Keep the instrument, scale, window, averaging and bandwidth consistent between measurements; otherwise a change in the display may look like an improvement when the signal itself has not changed.
Frequency, time and DC analysis answer different questions. Microchip’s AN681, Reading and Using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT), describes these as complementary ways to examine ADC performance and its interaction with the surrounding circuit. Look at the physical setup as well as the plot: National Instruments recommends pairing FFT analysis with inspection of the signal chain and measurement arrangement in its guide to diagnosing and reducing measurement noise in analog signals.

Check whether the noise follows the measurement setup
Inspect probe and lead placement, connectors, cable routing, and nearby power supplies or switching equipment. If the noise changes when a lead is moved, that is a reason to investigate pickup or the measurement setup, not proof of a particular fault. Where safe and practical, compare measurements with the input condition unchanged while checking whether the disturbance follows the source, cable, circuit power or instrument.
Treat the spectrum as a clue, not a fault code
A narrow spectral line or harmonics can prompt you to look for periodic interference; broadband noise can have several possible sources. Neither appearance maps reliably to one universal fix. Use the time trace, DC reading and physical checks to narrow down the path before deciding what to modify.

Choose a reversible fix that matches the suspected noise path
Once you have a repeatable baseline, consider the changes below in order of the likely path. Make one change at a time, repeat the same measurement, and check that the wanted signal is still present. These are design-guidance-based checks, not a guarantee of a particular reduction on an unspecified circuit.

Shorten a high-impedance signal run where practical, and route the signal and its return together. If the disturbance appears to enter on external wiring, shielded twisted-pair cable may help in a suitable setup. National Instruments recommends shielded twisted-pair cabling and single-point grounding among its noise-reduction measures; Texas Instruments discusses shielding and twisted pairs in the context of transducer inputs in SLOA052, Single-Supply Op Amp Design Techniques.

Shield termination and grounding depend on the equipment and signal path. Do not assume that one shield connection or grounding arrangement is correct for every system. Shielding can help with external pickup; it will not remove noise generated inside an amplifier or resistor.
If noisy and quiet currents share a return or supply path
Look for common impedance: two current paths can couple when they share a portion of a supply or return conductor. Analog Devices’ AN-1253, Layout Considerations for Digital Power Management (ADP1046A), discusses this mechanism and a star connection as one way to avoid it. Its relevance depends on the actual circuit; do not split grounds or add capacitors at random.

Check whether local bypassing or decoupling is appropriate near the circuit sections involved, and whether return currents flow through shared impedance. Analog Devices also explains power and ground considerations in Reduce the Chances of Human Error: Part 1, Power and Ground. Use the guidance to investigate the existing layout and current paths rather than treating any single layout prescription as universal.
If high-frequency interference may be reaching the analog input
An input filter can limit unwanted high-frequency content. In the design context covered by TI’s SLOA052, RF interference entering an op-amp input without filtering can be rectified or demodulated into lower-frequency artifacts. An RC filter also changes the circuit’s bandwidth and settling behavior, so choose its values only after accounting for the wanted signal and verifying the result. The available information does not establish a suitable cutoff or component value for your circuit.

If the noise may come from the amplifier, resistors or source impedance
Assess source resistance, amplifier voltage and current noise, resistor values and types, and the noise bandwidth of the circuit. Analog Devices’ AN-940, Low Noise Amplifier Selection Guide for Optimal Noise Performance, explains that equivalent input noise depends on source resistance as well as amplifier voltage and current noise. Microchip’s AN1228, Op Amp Precision Design: Random Noise, covers op-amp random noise.
Restricting bandwidth to what the application needs can reduce integrated noise, and lower resistor values can reduce resistor noise in some contexts. But lower resistance also affects loading, source requirements and power, while a narrower bandwidth can remove wanted signal content. These are reasons to identify the dominant contribution before changing values—not reasons to replace parts by guesswork.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the trade-offs before keeping a modification
| Change to consider | Noise path it may address | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Improve lead routing; consider shielded twisted pair | Interference picked up by external wiring | Whether the noise changes with cable placement, and whether the shield and grounding arrangement suit the setup |
| Review decoupling and return-current paths | Supply coupling or shared-impedance coupling | Whether the relevant currents share a path; whether a change preserves the circuit’s intended grounding |
| Add or adjust input filtering | Unwanted high-frequency content at the analog input | Wanted bandwidth, attenuation and settling behavior |
| Review source impedance, resistor values and noise bandwidth | Noise generated by the source, amplifier or resistors | Loading, power, source constraints and the wanted signal bandwidth |
After each change, compare the same time trace, DC level and FFT under the baseline conditions. Keep a modification only if it reduces the unwanted component without compromising the signal you need.

Do not defeat protective earth to cure hum
Never remove protective earth or defeat another safety feature as a noise fix. Analog Devices states in its power and ground guidance: “Never, never, never remove safety grounds (the third prong on the cord) from AC equipment.” If you are diagnosing mains-powered equipment, follow appropriate electrical safety practices and seek qualified help when needed.
What you need to choose exact component values
The title alone cannot establish the cause or predict how much improvement a particular change will deliver. Exact filter values or component choices require circuit details, including the schematic, source impedance, wanted signal bandwidth, ADC characteristics, FFT settings and measured spectrum. The cited sources provide design guidance; they are not measurements of your circuit.
