To keep Puppeteer memory use under control during a screenshot batch, limit how many pages run at once, close every page after its capture—even when navigation or screenshotting fails—and close the browser when the batch ends. Measure Node.js and Chrome process memory separately in the environment where the batch will run; Puppeteer’s documentation gives no universally safe page count or guaranteed memory reduction.
Why page and browser cleanup matters
Each open page is work the browser still has to manage. A batch that creates pages but leaves them open can accumulate resources as it progresses. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows capturing a page with Page.screenshot() and closing the browser afterward. When the target is just one part of a page, ElementHandle.screenshot() can capture that element instead. Puppeteer screenshot guide

Close each completed page with page.close(). Put it in a finally block so a failed navigation or screenshot does not bypass cleanup. When all batch work is finished, call browser.close() to close the browser gracefully. Do not use browser.disconnect() as a substitute: it disconnects Puppeteer but leaves the browser and its pages open. Sequential captures keep the number of active pages low but can reduce throughput. A bounded worker pool lets several URLs run at once while preventing the batch from creating an unbounded number of pages. Choose the worker count by measuring representative pages on the actual deployment machine; the official documentation does not establish a universal safe concurrency limit.

This example shows the lifecycle and cleanup pattern. runWithConcurrency and outputPathFor are application helpers, not Puppeteer APIs; supply implementations appropriate to your project.

Adjust navigation waiting to suit the sites you capture: pages with persistent network activity may not reach the selected idle condition. Define how your batch should handle navigation timeouts, failed loads, duplicate output filenames, and partial completion. Cleanup still runs when a worker throws, but the batch runner determines whether other work continues or stops.

Sequential versus bounded work
- Sequential: simplest way to keep active page count low; each URL waits for the previous capture to finish.
- Bounded workers: can improve throughput, but raises simultaneous resource demand. Increase concurrency only while measurements in your own workload remain acceptable.
Choose page-level or context-level cleanup deliberately
Closing a page after each capture gives fine-grained cleanup and works well when a worker handles one URL at a time. A browser context can group pages: closing the context closes all pages it contains. Contexts also define state isolation—cookies and local storage are shared within a context, not across separate contexts. Use separate contexts when captures need isolated state; use a shared context only when that state sharing is intended. Puppeteer browser management guide
Do not treat page creation, screenshotting, or closing as independent operations when multiple pages share a context. The Page API documents coordination in which BrowserContext.newPage(), Browser.newPage(), and Page.close() wait for screenshots in progress in that context. Puppeteer Page API

Write screenshot output without retaining buffers unnecessarily
The screenshot guide demonstrates saving directly to a file with the path option. This avoids keeping the returned screenshot buffer in your application code, but the documentation does not quantify a memory saving. If your application needs the image in memory—for example, to upload it immediately—process or release that buffer as soon as practical rather than accumulating results across the batch. Measure memory in the processes that matter
Node.js heap figures do not represent all memory used by the browser. Track Node.js resident memory and Chrome child-process memory separately, together with active-page count and completed URL count. Compare a single-page run with your intended bounded concurrency using representative pages. Include unusually large images, long documents, animation, or heavy scripts if those occur in production; a small test page is not a reliable stand-in for every target.

For retained JavaScript heap objects, Puppeteer’s Page API provides page.captureHeapSnapshot(). A JavaScript heap snapshot is useful for investigating that heap, but it is not a measurement of total Chrome process or native memory. Puppeteer Page API

Troubleshoot growing memory or leftover Chrome processes
Memory rises as the batch progresses
- Check whether completed pages are being closed on both success and error paths. Put
page.close()infinally. - Check that the worker pool enforces its limit rather than scheduling every URL concurrently.
- Compare Node and Chrome process memory separately. If Node memory grows, inspect whether the application retains screenshot buffers or other results. If Chrome memory grows, inspect active pages and workload characteristics.
- Use a heap snapshot to investigate retained JavaScript heap objects, while remembering that it does not cover all browser memory.
Chrome processes remain after the batch
Confirm that the code reaches browser.close() after batch completion and that error handling does not bypass the outer cleanup. If Chrome processes remain in a container after work has finished, inspect process supervision and PID 1 behavior. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide notes zombie Chrome processes in some PID 1/container setups and suggests considering dumb-init; it is not a general memory-optimization setting. Captures stall or produce partial results
Check navigation failures and timeouts, and decide whether one failed URL should stop the batch or be recorded while other workers continue. Make output names unique so concurrent captures do not overwrite each other. If screenshots are taken within a shared context, account for Puppeteer’s documented coordination around screenshots and page creation or closure; do not assume those calls proceed independently.
