How to Reduce Memory Use in Windows When Your PC Is Low on RAM

Use Task Manager to find memory-heavy apps, trim unnecessary background load, and understand when Windows settings cannot replace more physical RAM.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To reduce memory use in Windows, first identify which apps are using RAM in Task Manager, then close what you do not need, disable only unnecessary startup apps, and review background activity where Windows offers that control. These steps reduce demand; they do not add physical RAM. If your usual workload still leaves the PC short of memory, its hardware or workload may be the limit.

Find out what is using your RAM

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. In Processes, inspect the Memory column. Look for familiar apps you are actively using, such as a browser with many open tabs.
  3. Choose Performance > Memory to see the overall memory state.
  4. Close work you have finished and browser tabs you no longer need, then use your PC normally and see whether it remains sluggish.

Close apps you recognize and no longer need; do not end a process just because its name is unfamiliar. Windows, drivers, and security software may rely on processes that should remain running. Microsoft recommends using Task Manager to monitor resource use and closing apps that are not in use (Microsoft’s Windows performance guide).

Stop unnecessary apps from starting with Windows

Startup apps can add to the work your PC does when you sign in and remain active afterward. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to start automatically.

  • Windows 11: Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps.
  • Windows 10: Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or use Task Manager > Startup. Exact labels can vary by release.

Task Manager may show a startup-impact category for each app. This describes its impact during startup; it is not a measurement of how much RAM it will use later. If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled until you can identify it. See Microsoft’s startup-app instructions.

Limit background activity where Windows allows it

Some supported apps expose a background-activity permission. In Windows, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app, open Advanced options, and review its background permissions. The setting is app-dependent, so you may not see it for every app, especially desktop programs.

Restricting background activity can affect notifications or updates you expect from that app. Keep it enabled for apps whose background activity is important to you. Microsoft documents the available controls for supported apps in Windows.

Restart if memory use or sluggishness persists

Save your work and restart Windows if closing unneeded apps does not help. After signing back in, reopen only what you need and watch Task Manager. If one app’s memory use grows unusually during normal use, updating it or limiting how much you keep open may help; a restart alone will not resolve a recurring app problem or a workload that exceeds available memory. Microsoft also recommends restarting when performance does not improve after closing unused apps (Windows performance guidance).

Understand what the page file can—and cannot—do

Windows uses virtual memory to give applications virtual address space and can move some memory pages between physical RAM and a paging file on disk. The page file also supports committed memory and crash-dump needs. Windows manages its size by default, adjusting it in relation to installed RAM, commit charge, and dump requirements (Microsoft’s page-file guidance).

Disk storage is slower than physical RAM, so paging is not equivalent to having more RAM. A larger page file does not turn a low-RAM computer into a higher-RAM one, and disabling the page file is not a recommended way to free memory. Manual sizing is relevant to specific circumstances, such as certain allocation errors—not routine memory cleanup (Microsoft’s allocation-error documentation). For more on how Windows moves pages between RAM and disk, see Virtual Address Space and Physical Storage.

When software changes are not enough

If your normal workload continues to crowd memory after you close optional apps and reduce unnecessary background activity, the PC may be limited by its installed RAM or by the amount of work you ask it to handle. Microsoft cautions: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” (Microsoft Support.)

More physical memory can let a computer handle more work at once, but whether an upgrade is possible depends on the specific PC. Before buying RAM, check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for the memory type, maximum capacity, available slots, and whether the memory is replaceable or soldered. If the system cannot be upgraded or no longer meets your needs, comparing replacement options may make more sense than repeatedly changing software settings. Microsoft’s overview explains how computer memory relates to workload.

Which approach fits your situation?

Approach Best fit Trade-off
Close unused apps and tabs; reduce unneeded startup or supported background activity Optional apps or background load are contributing to current memory pressure. Quick and reversible, but reduces demand rather than increasing installed RAM.
Upgrade physical memory, if supported Your ordinary workload still exceeds what the PC handles comfortably. Requires a compatible, upgradeable PC and costs money; confirm specifications before choosing a module.
Replace the PC, if an upgrade is not practical The existing computer cannot be upgraded or remains inadequate for your workload. Higher cost and a broader change than adjusting software; the right choice depends on the machine and your needs.
